Logic-defying arts and crafts: Super Mario Mobius Strip

Tony Ponce, Associate Editor

I can't hear the word "Mobius" without thinking about Sonic SatAM and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Buried underneath those are memories from elementary school when we were introduced to the Mobius strip, a seemingly magical object that has a single continuous surface. This is achieved by taking a length of paper, twisting one end 180 degrees, then taping the two ends together. When you draw a line down the middle of the strip, you will end at the same point you began, having traveled both "sides" of the paper without ever lifting your pencil.

Modeler Joaquin Baldwin has brought math magic back with his 3D printed Mobius strip of level 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. Every Goomba and background detail has been rendered on the sandstone sculpt, which takes Mario through the stage, past the castle, then back to the starting point in an endless loop. Sorta like the Minus World!

If you wish to buy one of those showpieces for yourself, you can drop 24 bones at the link below. Also check out the rest of Joaquin's wares here, filled with other cool trinkets like DØG from Half-Life 2 or a polygonal Cloud Strife.

This thing is awesome! Buying one next paycheck! Perfect coffee table conversation piece. =)
My mind, it's... BLOWN AWAY!
Eh... that's cute. What amazes me, is holy goddamn I had no idea you could get 3d printing done for so cheap with that kind of quality. Like wtf, the future is here and nobody told me.
Loving the other ones he's done. Polygon Cloud Strife seems to be spot on except for the eyes a bit. The DØG one is perfect, love the inclusion of the companion cube.
My brain melted D:
ugh... this was already covered on kotaku about a week ago.. it's getting a bit sad how behind the news from Dtoid is becoming.

Is everything okay in dtoid land? are you guys being treated well? what's goin on.
^ It's new to me. I usually avoid Kotaku like the plague.

Pretty neat.
Perhaps you should go back to Kotaku.
@BananaGobbler

Answered for me already, but I don't visit Kotaku anymore. I used to up until they changed the layout.
Wtf is a kotaku? And the first one to respond "google it" is getting a swift punch to the dick.
Cool stuff ^^
That seems like a pretty reasonable price for this. I may grab one.
I can't hear Mobius without thinking 2 things:

Mobius the Living Vampire

And the Mobius Code ability from The Matrix Online, that had something to do with one of their events.

Other then that though, this strip is REALLY cool.

@BananaGobbler

And the internet is a big place where things don't ALWAYS get covered by EVERYWHERE quickly.

And yeah, a lot of us feel the same: We don't like Kotaku for one reason or another -so why should we have known, or cared, this was there?
