gamescom: Dust 514 is looking a lot better

Dust 514 made its gameplay debut at the EVE Online Fanfest event earlier this year where I got some extensive hands-on time with the game. Back then, I thought the overall concept was great, but the visuals and controls needed a lot of work. I'm happy to say Dust 514 has come a long way since I last saw it six months ago.

In terms of visuals, everything looks significantly better. What I saw back at Fanfest made the game look like a last-generation game, graphically. Now it looks like it belongs with the heaping amount of other first-person shooter titles on the market.

Controls have been tuned up, too. They were really my main concern, and it's great to see the team at CCP make some serious fixes here. The gun handling overall feel a lot more tight, but there is still some looseness going on with the firing mechanics. Specifically, the sniper rifle was completely useless -- there was simply way too much sway applied to the design.

It's great to see CCP on the right track as I'm really interested in seeing what effect having a free-to-play game on the PlayStation 3, and having a direct connection to EVE Online on the PC will do for the future of this industry. I wasn't all that convinced that this would make a good first-person shooter originally, but the gamescom demo has definitely changed my mind.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

I played the beta on ps3 last month... it was ghastly.

How much did it improve exactly? The game had too much gray for my taste.
This from the guy that gave the thumbs up to Steel Battalion Kinect controls (yeh I know he said sorry).
not from what ive seen
I hope what ever version you were playing gets patched over to beta soon because the game looks and plays like shit. Plus, I'm, not buying the "it's still in beta argument" either. It feels like less than beta currently. Most of their effort and streamlining has gone all into that online shop. Seriously, it's the best looking thing in that game.
NDA GUYS. Dont break it.

But yeah, Each patch has significantly improved the game. Thats all ill say.

I cant wait to see the finished product.
LEONOFDEATH has a good point. Be careful, boys.
Playing the new build now. Marked improvement in FPS game mechanics, control responsiveness and graphics. Some other nice tweaks to weapons and equipment to bring some balance and better functionality.

It isn't perfect by far but they are definitely making good progress in the right direction. Hope everyone remembers this is a Beta test. I know for most of us console players Beta=Demo. But this has been a true development process since April and the Devs at CCP are really using constructive player feedback to make the necessary changes. They aren't filling every request but they are addressing the things that really matter.

I know the goal was "Summer 2012" but I wouldn't mind them taking even more time to get things right. The Beta opens up to all PlayStation Plus members on Aug 21st so I hope as many PS3 shooter fans try it as possible. I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but give it a chance. It's F2P so you really have nothing to lose. And when it does fully release and if it still isn't up to your standards, then give it a few months and come back to it.

CCP says they are in it for the long haul, and I for one believe them :)
