$99 hackable Android console Kickstarter: $75k in 1 hour! photo

The Ouya is a $99 Android-based game console that would come with free-to-play games and a development kit. Or, it will be once they make enough cash on Kickstarter to get it going. I think they'll be fine, though: They've raised over $75,000 of their $950,000 goal in one hour this morning!

The organizers say that they love console gaming, but have seen the market push developers away and more toward mobile gaming. This is their answer to the current situation, making games less expensive to make and buy. Their only condition to developers on the Ouya: at least some gameplay has to be free. That shouldn't be a problem, as just the whole industry seems to be moving that direction.

Aside from the Android OS (4.0), the console would be Tegra3-based, have 1GB of RAM, 8GB of flash storage, and sport HDMI and USB connectors. The concept image above shows a lovely wireless controller.

So, big, TV-sized, free-to-play games out of a little Android-based console? For $99? No wonder they've raised $75k in an hour. In fact, the pledge number jumped up to over $92,000 while I was writing this blog!

Are you down for an Android-based console?

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

It's cute, but my TV is reserved exclusively for Skyrim.

Can it play Skyrim?
The only real question is what took so long! Really, this answers alot of non-problems the industry has been feinting over. 100% excited. Except for the free-to-play thing. Where are my 1$ apps!
I don't think casuals will buy this. They have their ipad.
It has sticks.

STICKS.

STICKS.

STICKS.

YES PLEASE.
Why do games have to offer free content? Back in the old days I bought my PS game and didn't have to worry about content that I missed or had to buy afterwards. I just gave them my friggin' money and _that was it_. JUST TAKE IT ALREADY, give me one single _physical_ copy of your game and leave me alone with your stupid DLC-policies.
Unless they not only get some really amazing games but also hire some absolute marketing genius, I don't see this going anywhere in the mainstream really.
Assuming it's obviously going to reach its goal, I'm looking forward to this :)
Yeah, what AngryAvatar says. I love the idea, but it has to have the games, and some real marketing behind it. 950k will let them make some prototypes, but you need millions to push this kind of product
Looks good but I fail to understand why the shit they needed it to run Android. Couldn't they just put a custom UI on Angstrom or ANYTHING minimal and light? Seriously, Android 4.0? Come on, man.
I agree, it should act like steam where you can buy or play for free depending on the content. You don't want microtransactions for everything, it limites quality.

Imagine an atmospheric game that was F2P? Halfway through Lone Survivor do I want to see an advertisement or a microtransaction menu? HELL NO.
Yup sounds ok no way will it succeed ... Unless it gets lucky and has a killer app at launch.
I really like the idea of this console. I hope it gets funded, and if it does there's a good chance I'll buy it.
Man what a unique concept...O wait all the little media player have bean doing this for a year or two and no one fucking cares. Maybe they can get the phantom name rights to top this shit off.
........ OK I sorta jive with what they are saying ..... but .....

There is already an open game console its called a PC in fact the PC is everything they described. Save for the $100 thing a decent OPEN gaming PC will run you about the same as a console.

The only thing my PC doesn't currently do is run android and thats probably just because I'm not interested enough in the Android OS to press four buttons (mostly googling to see if I can get it) and running an installer....

Maybe if they look more towards distribution and less towards hardware (not the biggest fan of fixed console hardware). I guess they did say you could hack it but I "hacked" my PC not 370 days ago when I added a new graphics card.
This is pretty much where I expect gaming will end up, save for dedicated PCs for the hardcore experiences. Pretty much the main perk of consoles was accessibility and (used to be) moderately powerful hardware, a niche that's filled as far as people need from phones they already own, and a device like this bridges that into the living room nicely.
It's whether or not people WANT something that bridges the gap between their mobile games and a console for the living room that's the question, since they obviously already have an outlet for their games.

As a media hub it might be a neat little thing to hack into, though.
@AngryAvatar: Well if nothing else, they've just topped Wii U in the race for worst named console. No one can take that away from them.
Almost 200k, this should be interesting. Ahh hell, I'll throw in $99.
too many chefs in the kitchen
I think some people are missing the point of "at least some free content"... I think this is just another way of saying "compulsory demos" demos have often been a huge factor in my buying decisions. in the past I remember the demo discs for psone that i would look forward to the next one in order to see what i would be buying. a lot of apps on the apple store, I completely ignore unless i get to use a lite version first. because you just can't tell if something is going to be worth your while unless you can get hands on.
I wasn't expecting much but I read through it and it actually sounds pretty promising.
Ouya?..BOOYAH!
"At least some gameplay has to be free"

I don't know there's people freaking out here because of it. It can be just like being able to play a free demo and paying for unlicking the rest. Sounds pretty awesome to me.

I want it to suceed and I want to develop something for rhis thing.
The title to this article reads like some spam bot post here.
Sounds pretty awesome. At the very least it will be an interesting experiment. I'll pitch in my share.
i read that name as "ooohh-yeah!" whats the point, a pc does this and more. why would we ever need a dedicated android console? dont some phones connect via mini hdmi cables to tvs? so you could already play your android games on your tv?

i could see something like this being installed ON a TV. like alot of the internet connected tvs now. just sell a tv with android capability that comes with a controller.
@fetus - the point is that it is really cheap
Wow shit
This is really fucking cool.
I'd love to try it out. New consoles are awesome
Oh boy there is going to be a lot of people wanting their "investment" back when this falls through. Remember folks, your money is a donation, so only give so much as you could afford to watch burn.
I don't get the need for this. Who are they catering to, exactly?
So much hate, I can see this working out quite well, more so if a lot of devs jump on it.
Grandma's gonna love this.
Since this is based on phone hardware which changes like the wind the Ouya will be obselte in a year. No one is gonna buy a new console every year

How will they deal with the yearly android version changes?

It seems like a cheap Xbox

They need google to back them directly
Sure, I'll help Kickstart this.
Kickstarter = I DON'T CARE
Heck, even OCRemix have a Kickstarter now. OC REMIX! *cries*
i understand the point - lots of devs making android games, so why not use those devs to fill out a library for a cheap home console with minimal effort.

it kind of makes sense, only as people have mentioned, PC has this kind of thing covered even if it's not what you'd call competition for it.

i think they would do better selling a wireless pc pad with a really good android emulator bundled into the package, or hell just the emulator for easy digital sales.
The design of this thing looks like something from some pretentious foodie asshole's kitchen. I hate when they make gaming hardware look shiny, fragile and high maintenance. I shouldn't be afraid of breaking or scuffing up a $99 console. There's a reason why PS3/360 no longer have glossy finishes.
I'm pretty sure Android has enough money on their own to fund development of their own console. Thanks, Kickstarter, for helping more companies weasel people out of their money LONG before they'll have anything to show for it.
seems interesting I like the idea but I wont be backing it just yet

I think this has potential. More indie games and the possibility of games at the right price point like they used to be. None of this $60 a pop shit they've been forcing on us. I'm at least donating enough to get the device and dev on it a bit. Seems like a good market to jump into when you consider the possible sales figures involved if your game is a hit.
I have wanted something like this for a while now :)
I can see this both succeeding and failing.

One the one hand, it's cheap, and pretty much everyone is familiar with Android now. Also, games like Dead Space will benefit from joysticks.

On the other hand, it's Android. It's cloud-based, so an Internet connection is pretty much going to be required, and people aren't going to grasp the concept of their "phones on the TV." Also, EVERYTHING on the console will be digital, so people have to be okay with that, and a lot of people, myself included, aren't.
Yes please. I hope this gets the support it deserves, even if PC gaming already has what the ouya offers, an android powered console for TV's is difficult to pass on, many new opportunities for smaller developers will arise. Well, I say that from a developer's point of view, I want to make games for that thing.
it has twitch. sold.
Love how they showed the process for coming up with the controller which is just a Xbox 360 controller, how much money are they wasting? Brings up some serious questions, heck maybe Google is making their own thing secretly and that's why they ain't saying shit in this.

If it's so amazing they would have real backers
Seems like an indie developer's dream come true, which is awesome.

Also, everything about that woman's face makes me frown a little and look away.
Interesting, I like competition the only problem is what are they really going to compete with? Xbox wants to replace your cable box, playstation wants to be your latest media tech movie/music/entertainment hub, and the WiiU is basically about the games. What is this OUYA going to do? Let you play your mobile games on your TV? I guess that's neat, but is it enough?
I bet the big three are gonna be butthurt as fuck if this all pans out, and I sure hope it does.
And how as of this moment it is at $498,310.

So I guess they will reach this goal. I dunno about this, maybe it will make Microsoft and Sony shape up and stop being so greedy?
