Twisted Pixel announces The Gunstringer for Kinect

Jim Sterling, Reviews Editor

Twisted Pixel, the brain behind 'Splosion Man and Comic Jumper, has pulled the blinds off its latest game, and it's exclusively for the Kinect. The Gunstringer is a Wild West adventure starring a skeletal marionette and featuring a blend of 2D and 3D gameplay.

The announcement trailer gets in a dig at "old" control systems, and shows off some of the gameplay. To be honest, it looks a little ... wonky ... to me, but I am digging the character design and it looks seems like it could be a lot of fun.

Twisted Pixel rarely delivers a bad game, so I'll trust that the lads know what they're doing over there.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Is this the one Sean Carey, Xzyliac et al got to see last weekend?
Also, maybe he would have had more luck with the PS3 and Wii controllers if they were, you know, turned on?

:)
Ooooooh that looks awful. Art direction is ok I guess, the idea is great, but oh lord, the gameplay segments! Thing looks awful so far. I'm sure they'll come around and impress me, but Jesus, if you're going to gratuitously bash previous input methods, do so with a functional gameplay clip, not this horrid mess of derivative minigames and a barely functional platforming segment.
We didn't see it (I was also there), but our voices are in those laughs and boos you hear in the trailer. They never mentioned that this was Kinect exclusive, either.
I like Twisted Pixel also, but this does not look very good.
@djnealb

Did you at least get to see Sean's weiner?
Bad bad trailer.
What's this, a Kinect game that isn't a Wii Sports rip off? I'm not going go out to buy a Kinect just for this game, but this looks like a game that some people might want to get if only to have something other than the minigame collections that the Kinect has become infamous for.

The game looks funny (as is the norm for TP games) but the gameplay looks meh (as is the norm for TP games).
@mrandydixon
No. I don't think his wife would have appreciated that...
Why don't you mention this is planned to be an arcade game?

Never change, Jim.
mrandydixon: skewing the conversation towards dicks whenever possible.

Side note: this didn't look good.
A Kinect controlled version GunSmoke with a skeletal puppet cowboy in the main character role in place of Billy Bob? When will Twisted Pixel get back to making something that Capcom hasn't already done in some form so Capcom can borrow back from their work for cell phone apps/games?
Ah,well. It's not as if they were doing anything with that intellectual property,anyway, so TP can just call for squatter's rights.
@djnealb

That didn't stop him from showing it to me last night in my dream!

@Corduroy Turtle

Just trying to keep you entertained, my friend.

@Infamy

Was anybody here actually thinking this would be a retail release? It's Twisted Pixel.
Twisted Pixel hit ratio looks to be heading down.
When have they ever made a bad game?
All the controller flailing in the beginning of the trailer reminded me of the people in bad infomercials who make simple tasks look REALLY difficult for the sake of selling you something.

Also, this game looks like utter garbage.
Either M$ forced them into doing a kinect game or they just wanted to take a shot. But for so far this looks like a generic on rails shooter with a nice designed character.
I'm not going to buy kinect untill a game comes out that really makes it worth while, with some real freedom other than rails.
And yes I got a chance to use kinect, and even the menus just felt unresponsive with a delay between my movement and on screen cursor movement.
looks terrible..........this cant be a full retail release looking as shitty as it does
It's dumb that they dissed control methods that they've used before. The game looks okay, but the aiming reticules have to change, they look disgusting, like plastic objects you get from cheap christmas crackers.
I like how they mock established control systems to drum up excitement for something that doesn't work half the time.
@Stealth
Remember Fairytale Fights? Yeah, that looked like an arcade game but went to retail.
Anyways, the trailer doesn't look... that great. Oh well, we still have Ms. Splosion Man to look forward to!
I'll stick to controllers for now. I can imagine moving the character with precision will be difficult. The target reticle looks huge, likely making up for the imprecise gun targeting it'll have.
I'm not sure I'm following the "awesomeness" of this game. The art looks nice but the game is completely different, I don't know. This game doesn't make me go and buy a Kinect, sadly, but it seems like a nice try to do something a little fresh than dancing, exercise and race on borads Kinect games.
Anything that looks remotely ok for my Kinect is already bought. It looks pretty bad, but it'll probably be fun enough considering it is Twisted Pixel, and this is early footage.
The gameplay looks pretty bad, although I won't judge until someone gets a hands on. Plus like Jim said, Twisted pixels other two games have been great so theres no reason this one wouldn't be.

Looks like an on rails shooter? With some 2D stuff in there? I am confused by this kinect game.
Wow...settle down on all the hating, people.....its an early build.
@Jayson619

BaZING!!!
I do dig the character design a lot. Obviously, my concern is how well this will work...
:(
Twisted Pixel, why?
It looks like the worst part of Comic Jumper, now with Motion Controls.

Please don't be bad, I love you too much!
I like Twisted Pixel, but this games looks kind of terrible. And the ad was terrible as well. The gameplay looks kind of like Comic Jumper, which was the only Twisted Pixel game I didn't love.
Looks kind of terrible.
I like how they use non-Microsoft controllers for their "dig" at traditional controls.
I'm moderately interested.
Looks kind of terrible.
@ Justice
don't you remember cap guns? I agree, wonky is the word. I actually like the character design better in line drawn style.
I think it looks pretty cool.
umm why wouldnt the other controllers work? just seems like a rails shooter to me.
They're trying to pull attention away from the fact that those other controllers would be a better fit for this game.
Speaking as someone who's actually liked and bought all TP's games, I have to say if this keep going where it's going, I might be disappointed. It looks like they just took Comic Jumper's gameplay, adapted it for Kinect, and used an IP they had sitting on the backburner for this.

That said, I'll probably still get it, because I am a consumer whore and TP hasn't done me wrong yet. And I need more Kinect games. I will keep the faith.
For being such a Sony fan, you'd think Jayson619 would at least use a Sony exclusive character as his avatar.
the opening CG looked good but the gameplay looked atrocious, I'm interested in seeing how this turns out though only because it's a Kinect game that is trying to do something that isn't dancing or mini-games.

I don't see the reason for dissing other controller methods it kinda made them look like douches. Especially because this game won't be as responsive as any of the control methods they mentioned. It's actually a really bad move in their part considering alot of people are refusing to give Kinect a chance. Saying that it works better than traditional controls probably turned away some potential customers.
With a device like Kinect, it's impossible to make anything that's not on-rails. That's where it looses appeal for me.
@GoofierBrute Kinect Sport is a damn good ripoff. I never understood that statement. Because Nintendo did it first means everybody else is making ripoffs. It makes sense to make sportsbased games for something like Kinect. I would argue that it makes way more sense for kinect because it uses your whole body. I frequently play Kinect Sport with my family. I realize that you don't have to hate Kinect to love Traditional games. I play Dance Central and 5 starred every song and also beat Dead Space 2 and have almost every achievement.
Oh gosh. It's like the meh gameplay from Comic Jumper, except with Kinect control? I will just stick with Ms. 'Splosion Man, I think.
Glad Twisted Pixel are finally putting out something crappy that I won't need to buy. I've really been meaning to cut down on the amount I've been spending on games. Thanks guys!
Why is Jim Sterling a lot more restrained with hos criticisms in articles about 360 games?
So it's Comic Jumper for Kinect. Do not know if want.
