TGS: PlayStation All-Stars gets a dramatic trailer

Jim Sterling, Reviews Editor

Check out the full roster of bros that'll be smashing each other in the face when PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale launches later this year. A new trailer has come from the Tokyo Game Show and it gives us a good look at all the characters.

I really am quite looking forward to this by now. Really, how can you not love a fighting game with Sackboy in it?

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Wishing I could try this out. Fucking Sony being stingy with their beta.
"Really, how can you not love a fighting game with Sackboy in it?"

It's a soulless husk of a wannabe, design-by-committee game. How could I even care about this game? #AgressivelyApathetic...
I was skeptical about this game until I played the Vita beta. DAY FUCKING ONE.
@Raiku - Various PS3 kiosks have the demo.

I tried it out. Wasn't impressed.

I liked they dynamic backgrounds, though.
Not gonna lie, theres a chance I'll still play it if I don't get a wii/wii-u, but man, its so shameless I can't help but laugh
In the battle to come up with words for a large fight, it's your move Nintendo.
@MattEdWithCheese

Agreed. Let's be sure to tell all of these developers that we love it when they rip games off. I know I want to play the same shooters, fighters, platformers, etc til the end of time. This is disgusting and shameless, but they know the fanboys will buy it on every device. Boo.
i played a demo that one of the reps put in our ps3, i really did like the play of the game. though it has a similar concept it is far from a brawl knock off. it takes a principal and puts a new unique spin on it that is enough to make it a title of it's own
@ TSP: Where? At TGSW? Its a bit late to try it out there.

Gamestop and BB only have Madden at their places.
No Crash Bandicoot!?
Everything in this world is just another take on an older idea. Like Star Wars. Just one giant copy and paste from scenes of older movies. Doesn't make it bad.
Not the biggest Sony fan out there but this looks pretty fun. Sure it's a shameless Smash copy, but maybe that will motivate Nintendo to try even harder for the Wii U and 3DS version, making it a win-win for Sony fans and Nintendo fans. Still I wish you didn't have to use your supers to score the kill.

Fortesque and Spike get me hype.
@Agent - You played a very different demo from me then. Sure the tiered supers are different and there are infinite lives, but that's kind of a problem in and of itself.

Once I got to to Kratos' tier 3 smash it was pretty much over for anyone that respawned and you retain meter even when you're KOed and respawn. That's just sloppy design - the meter should reset on KO to keep things balanced.

Also since there are unlimited lives one would think that an in-game scoreboard would help people know how they were doing. SSB doesn't have it, but since there are lives there's something to go on in regards to how well everyone is doing.

Kratos could wipe the floor with the rest of the demo roster but i strikes me as odd Parappa and Big Daddy would be so evenly disadvantaged. I mean, as I understand it, Big Daddies are something you're supposed to fear for a while in Bioshock.
@Raiku - I played it at Gamestop yesterday.

Could be it just started distribution, because I was told the Sony rep just brought it that same day.
I ... may actually get this.
Doubt I'll even be able to play it. Always got little hellspawns playing these.

Pluss theres a part of me that says its not worth since its considered a fighter
It probably won't influence my purchase at this point, but I still think the roster is a little light. I suppose there still might be time to reveal a few more though.
Needs more characters...I guess we'll have to wait until the next iteration.
Still hate the fucking "only kill with super" system.

I'm probably going to buy this used
"Check out the full roster of bros..." I see what you did there.
"Check out the full roster of bros that'll be smashing each other in the face..."

Preordered the PS3 version on amazon and got $10 off, extra costumes, AND THE VITA version! It could be a completely soulless copy of SSB, but if it's fun, I'm all in. I have more of a connection with many of these guys than any of the Nintendo cast outside of Star Fox and Zelda characters.
@Arttemis

don't worry, it's more than a souless copy of SSB, not that SBBS owns the genre or anything. In fact, I find it quite funny that people want SBB features in PSASBR. "Oh, why isn't falling from a cliff a death".

@Aries - I'm so glad the game isn't completely revolved around edge kills. Any sort of competitive play with the wrong crowd, and the advanced mechanics get thrown out of the window in favor of side-launches and edge guarding. It's pathetic. At least now there's a fighting game revolving around, you know, fighting.
Yessss. Cant wait.
It wouldn't be a sony all stars post with out the usual bitching in the comments we have all heard before. Looks sick though
"Still I wish you didn't have to use your supers to score the kill."

And this is why I'm actually gonna skip out on the game (bargain bin maybe). Didn't like the mechanic in Dissidia, not gonna start liking it now.
That trailerbdidn't show the full roster.

I want to try this, even though I doubt it will be better than Brawl.
"And this is why I'm actually gonna skip out on the game (bargain bin maybe). Didn't like the mechanic in Dissidia, not gonna start liking it now."

You could like it, if you know, you reframe your mind.
I think this is a better trailer and better looking game.

"You could like it, if you know, you reframe your mind."

Not really. I'm open to anything, but supers in general are a no no for me. In brawl I would always take them out, I didn't like the mechanic in Dissidia, and even in something like Street Fighter I still don't like the implementations of supers. I like a fighting game revolving around, you know, fighting.
What the... I saw a few people I didn't know was in the game in this trailer o_O . What's a hypotenuse?
So fucking addicting!
"I like a fighting game revolving around, you know, fighting."

All I see in the video is fighting, and btw, Supers are a part of fighting.
"how can you not love a fighting game with Sackboy in it?"

The Sackboy character has kinda run its course, to be honest.
@silent
i didn't say it was perfect, i just said it was fun and a bit different. I do have my complaints but we'll see as it goes since this is not the final, who knows we may see an update or last minute change. The points you raise are valid though and i also happened to play as Kratos but i had a fun few minutes. Brawl was good but it was slow, had prat falls, and it felt like all the players went through the same basic motions. so far PASBR (to me at least) has not done this, now i know this is only a demo and it can go either way but from what i played, "I" personally (in my opinion, not fact or law) enjoyed it enough. only time may prove me right or wrong.
Note: before everyone gets the mobs ready, Brawl was not bad but it was not perfect either, I love it but for the 3rd installment it could have been better.
@Raiku
i work in electronics at wal-mart. our rep loaded it in the morning so i played it on my break.
Fuck it. I started out hating this idea and now I can't wait.

Fuck you, Sony, you clever bastards.
If this bombs I wonder if it will make sony start thinking of not jacking Nintendo off. First move and now this. I wonder if Sony is planning a platforming game where a German electrician is tasked with rescuing the Duchess of the bread kingdom from a giant horny frog monster by collecting 120 pentagons.
After playing the beta, this went from wait and see to must buy. SO FUN!
@Steve Thompson It's pretty much impossible for this game to bomb... financially. People are gonna eat this game up when it launches, doesn't matter if it does end up sucking or not, It'll sell either way you can count on that.

I love how people warning about the inevitable balancing issues in this game used to be the lowest denominator, but now more people are starting to realize that using supers to score points just "might" be a horrible idea.
Dude, fucking Ratchet, that kid from Ape Escape, AND Sack Boy?!

So hyped. I want this. I'll buy a PS3 just for that game.
Wasn't there a story awhile back that allowed the PS+ to be in the beta? If I'm wrong then cool.. but I'm sure I read that on dtoid..
WOW! these smash brothers look all different from the last one
Wow... I still honestly have no urge to play this game. None of these characters really excite me that theyre in. The mind boggling lack of crash bandicoot and spyro is just confusing. Are they owned by someone else now or something? get some more 3rd party guys in this, like way more. I mean 20 characters.. seriously? Games like this need 30-40 characters. These games arent standard fighters, theyre not even about balance, theyre about madness and fun 4player mayhem. 2 coles? new dante? Heihachi in some spinoff game AGAIN?? Let another tekken character be here instead of him, is he even popular in tekken anymore? I guess I really am not super into sony mascot type characters as i led myself to believe. No Ico or Wander? no lara croft? Kain or Raziel? a Clayfighter? I mena I'm just throwing stuff out there but i bet theres DOZENS of game companies who would love their 3rd party character to be in this game. Quite the shame. I guess ill get this game when it hits $10 on black friday 2013 next year
@GrimmTixX yes, the rights to Spyro and Crash have been owned by Activision/Sierra for something like six or seven years now, so that's why they aren't here.
When it was first announced I wasn't too interested, but I've completely changed my mind since. I've been looking into this game the past month or so and I have to say I'm very excited now. Day one buy for me. It's gonna be great.

Oh, and people are still calling this a shameless rip-off?

lol okay, sure.
still wary about this :\
OMG NINTENDOOOO WHAT DID YOU DO TO SMASH BROSSSS!!!

But seriously, the dropoff rate for this games will be immense.

Supers to kill... really? What happened to plain old skill? This is gonna make the game very repetitive and likely unbalanced.

A rather small roster of characters.

Not sure why they have stages that switch between 2 games. Instead of like 14 stages they could have had 28. It helps to have a range of stages, some insane and some less insane.

The game obviously won't reach Brawl quality for countless reasons (they couldn't match content no matter what they did), one main one being that in Smash Bros... you can turn all the crazy stuff OFF and have a straight match. You can't do that here as far as I know and it's gonna suffer for it.

Without items and such Smash has an endlessly varied, defensive mechanics driven style that's brilliant for serious play.
