Review: Double Fine Happy Action Theater

Review: Double Fine Happy Action Theater photo

Double Fine did a terrific job with Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster -- so much so, that I couldn't help but be jealous that kids were getting such well-designed Kinect games. For all of the millions of people who own the device, and given the technology powering it, the overall software quality is decidedly not where it ought to be.

At the same time, I have to be thankful for developers who want to make games for children and take the job as seriously as any other big-name project. With Happy Action Theater, Double Fine is once again using Kinect to target a younger audience. This time, however, there's some room for us too.

Double Fine Happy Action Theater (Xbox Live Arcade)
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Released: February 1, 2012
MSRP: 800 Microsoft Points

Double Fine Happy Action Theater has more in common with an augmented-reality playground than what many of you would likely define as a strict "game." It's made up of 18 activities, which range from lava you can roll around in (YES!) to a Breakout-style level to a black-and-white scene that could be straight out of Godzilla.

What first grabbed my attention was that you're launched straight into the action. By default, "Director Mode" is on, meaning the on-screen activities are cycled through automatically every so often. In other words, parents can totally start the game up and let their children go wild without assistance.

Should you have a specific activity in mind, you can either press the start button on a controller or do the standard left-arm-out pose to land on an interactive level-select menu. While in an activity, you can also use a controller to manually skip to the next one. As far as navigation is concerned, they nailed it. It's both intuitive and unobtrusive.

As tends to be the case with games that bundle together many self-contained experiences, some are far better than others. Though a few of the activities in Happy Action Theater tread over similar ground -- throwing seeds for pigeons and planting flowers is essentially executed in the same way, for example -- there's more good than bad here.

My personal favorites are the aforementioned lava sequence, a disco club where your body is distorted and hops about sporadically, and the silly thing pictured above. In it, your photo gets taken, then you're allowed to move to a different position (while your clone remains stationary) and more photos ensue. Some dude is going to use this to hug himself and make a "forever alone" joke, just wait.

Even the less enjoyable activities are still entertaining. For instance, one of them puts you inside of a jelly dessert. That's it! You wiggle around and laugh about the insanity unfolding on your television. Replay value is definitely a valid concern -- less so for younger kids. I wouldn't go in expecting to get more than a few hours of fun out of this, personally.

The fact that up to six players can join in with practically no barriers to entry outside of turning on the Xbox 360 and booting the game up shows who the target audience is here.

None of the activities are particularly inventive, but I also wouldn't go so far to say they're boring, either. Enough of them are interesting that you probably won't regret buying Happy Action Theater for yourself. On the other hand, it should prove to be sufficiently engaging for kids (and kid-like adults, particularly when alcohol is in the room).

THE VERDICT

7.0 /10
Good: A solid game that definitely has an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun. Check out more reviews or the Destructoid score guide.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Watched a video demo of this and immediately thought kids and drunk people will enjoy this.
DToid started going down hill about a year ago ... you guys have the same features up top, I see like a handful of new posts a day ... basically anything not written by Jim is usually not that great.

Why does your website suck all of a sudden?
As an inebriated child, I enjoyed this game twice as much as Jordan.

14/10
Looks perfect for the little ones. Tim Schaffer and Double Fine have done a wonderful job this gen creating some unique IP's.

$10 seems like a fair asking price too.

...also, more Costume Quest please!!!
Any game that promises children burning in fire is a must-buy for me.
Anything that brings home the fun of submerging yourself in molten lava must be good.
EvilChamp, don't worry about it, bro. Go back to CNN and Slate
Microsoft's plan for the future of its system continues to impress in its breadth of gaming applications for the average teen-to-adult core gamer.
The screenshot of the children dancing in the fire is incredible.
Going to have a party around this game next week. Alcohol is like a powerup in this game!

@Evil Champ: 33 posts in the last 24 hours seems significantly more than a handful.
i dont get it.
Is anyone else depressed that Double Fine is spending its time making mini-game collections for kids?
This seems like it would be great for parties.
@eddimos
Nope. They can do what they want.
@eddiemos

It's not like that's all they're making.
@eddiemos

As long as they keep doing stuff like porting Costume Quest and Stacking to PC and coming up with more awesome new IPs, I don't see anything to be depressed about. Excited, more like.
@eddiemos - I support anything that gets Double Fine some money. Gaming is a better thing with them around.
@eddiemos

Nope, as far as I'm concerned as long as they aren't building T-1000, they can do whatever they want.
Looks lame.
Overrated tech demo, lame
gimme more psychonauts
@rancor09 and gueeds

You're the same person, lame.
Anyone else thinking about using the cloning thing to simulate a picture of yourself sexing another yourself, and then masturbating to said picture?

If you said "no" you're a fucking liar.
@Evil Champ
The thing you've got to understand is that everyone is just way too god damn busy putting a cock up your moms arse to write articles for the site.
I agree with you, it's a damn shame…
@Blasto

No

...

D:
Wasn't really looking forward to this. It basically looks like Eyetoy for Kinect. That doesn't seem too original to me, especially when you consider what else Timmy has under his belt. Still, I can't really be angry about it because it's selling for really cheap and his games Psychonauts and Brutal Legend didn't sell too well.
I see a Kinect-enabled Human Centipede coming soon, thanks to this game's cloning device.
@eddiemos

Nope, because Double Fine makes quality games and they need a place where they can finally shine without having to be weighed down by the fact that each critically acclaimed gem they release -somehow, inexplicably- doesn't become a blockbuster seller.

We've gotten more games from Double Fine since they made this move over a year ago then we had over the rest of the companies life time. That, to me, is a great thing.

@Paroxysm

Maybe he has unusually large hands?

@Evil Champ

Yet, the site is much more on point with what most of us want to read, and shaves out most of the unnecessary extra crap that many other sites shovel in as filler.

Don't like it, go read other things while you wait for the articles you want to read. No ones stopping you.
Double Find = Playable Pixar movies.
And we love em' for it.
I know people want proper games from Double Fine but after a string of games that didnt sell well I realise why they have to make cheap safe games for a while till we get the next big one
We had a double birthday party this weekend with around 10 kids in our house. Needless to say we had to find something to entertain them between pizza and cake time, sooo....I came upon this gem of a game that just release this week on Xbox Arcade for 800 MSP. At first I just downloaded the demo to see what it was all about. Then after seeing how much fun the kids were having with it I decided to go all in and buy it.
I was not disappointed. The great thing about this game is that everyone can join in at the same time and be seen by the Kinect. No need to sign in, or calibrate, it is all automatic. This one of the few game I have found that does this seemlessly.
The premise of the game is simply, you are an actor in a variety of settings, and interact with the screen. A favorite at the party was the hot lava scene. We had all the kids laying in the lava and coming up all on fire. They were cracking up. One kid, who is on the heavy side was actually sweating from all the moving around from this game.

If after reading you are still in doubt about the game, check out this great video review : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR9aIQyrsrs&feature;=g-u&context;=G209bfabFUAAAAAAAAAA
I have to be thankful for devs who want to make games for children Great job. affordable health insurance nc
I really like what you have acquired here, certainly like what you’re stating and the way in which you say it. 30 year term life insurance
I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well. In fact your creative writing abilities has inspired me to start my own Blog Arkansas Health Insurance
