Podtoid 195: Screaming Willem Dafoe Sperm photo

[Please forgive the weird audio levels this week. Not sure why Holmes is loud and I am quiet sometimes.]

On this week's Podtoid, the duo discusses S Club 7, the art of grave robbing, and how to talk to people without coming across as a snooty elitist. Also, we devise what may be Willem Dafoe's greatest movie role yet. He'd love it, for sure!

As far as the old games go, there are vague allusions to Aliens: Colonial Marines, Jim challenges Konami to let him direct a new Silent Hill, and a compromise is reached on that whole Mass Effect 3 thing. Also, why the flippin' heck does Jonathan not like Journey? Find out on Podtoid!

Oh this really made my morning. Girlish giggling was had.
Silent Hill: Book of Memories is being done by WayForward what the eff?!

Not sure how I missed that information. It's not that it wasn't ever stated, I guess I just refused to believe the game might be decent, so I never gave it a closer look. I'm excited to hear more about it, now.
Sweet lord. I just HAD to come on Domonoid this morning. Thanks, Jim, for slapping me in the face with screaming Willem Dafoe sperm. I'm going back to bed.
Destructoid...sigh
I'm just waiting for District Dafoe to come out in theaters. I'm literally "frothing" with excitement...

The grave robbing bit was hilarious, and then it was topped off by Holmes being forced to talk by himself. I was laughing so hard.
Can't wait to listen to this when I get home from work.
Fucking Mass Effect 3, it's kept me from these podcasts because I don't want anything spoilt ): Was hoping this week everyone would have shut up about it.

Can anyone tell me IF there are spoilers in this ep and what timecode do they start and end?
Moblin88: There are absolutely no spoilers on ME3's plot. We simply have a brief concluding discussion on the fans' opinions of the ending. An ending we detail in no way.
Ah brilliant! Thanks Jim, appreciate the heads up *nods*

I still can't believe how many fans finished that game so quickly and managed to organize such an issue out of it. Sucks for those of us who don't go through a game in a weekend.

Now I can go to sleep like a baby listening about willem dafoe and holmes rape.
The first half of your pitch for District Dafoe had me pretty legitimately excited. I was picturing the location from Battle Angel Alita, except with a floating city made out of human flesh. You gotta admit, that would make for one hell of a movie.
Oh and yeah, we got trap door in Australia, that show was ace!
Damn, I don't have time to listen to this until tomorrow.

Strangely enough it's the S Club 7 discussion i'm looking forward to the most!
Does Holmes even like anything?! God, he's like the Brad Shoemaker of Destructoid sometimes.
I think he likes Zelda and Mario and Rythm Heaven most of the time. Lots of other people like those too. That makes Holmes a "cool kid" who is "down with the hatch" or whatever.
I'm imagining Breden Fraiser's cumshot and It looks like the ending of Freddy's Dead only with Willam Dafoe
I am so glad to hear about Jim's healthy workouts and eating... I can live vicariously through him because I'm too lazy to do either of those things!

Also, I thought you lost weight in the last Office Chat you were in, Jim.
I'm gonna be honest, since Max and Tara left I haven't really enjoyed the show anymore, and recently unsubscribed from the podcast. I usually find Jim to be funny, but at some point it just got a little old for me without other people to bounce his humor off. Combine that with Jonathan's general patronizing of anything that isn't his point of view and it get's a little tiring.

Time for a reboot maybe? Not trying to be a dick, just giving honest feedback. Two hours of you two going back and forth just isn't doing it for me any more. *Shrug*
I'll just leave this here.

@ ctg867- You should subscribe to Podtoid again.
ive been lighting a show all week and singing trap door jims in my mind tuning out and Johnathan jim take over my brain
Oh man, when I made the last comment I hadn't finished the show yet. I was waiting for an appointment (so I was around other people) when I was listening to Jim's movie pitch, and I had a hard time stopping myself from laughing out loud when he was describing the movie but especially the cumshot part. But I failed in restraining myself when Holmes was incredulously recapping the situation because it was just too fucking hilarious. Thanks guys, now random people I'll never see again think I'm crazy. <3
@ctg867 - Yer doing it wrong.

@Holmes - You seem to be having some mic trouble in the last few episodes hun. Yer naturally more soft spoken than Jim so maybe move closer to the mic or practice trying to match Jim's "full bodied" acoustics?
Jim shoud watch Anti-christ as there is a scene where Dafoe spunks out blood and a kid falls slow motion out of a window in the opening scene, he FUCKing love it
@ BrowneyeWinkin- I'm wearing a headset that's super close to my face. I think the problem is I've just been really exhausted lately. I'll be more conscious of that going forward, and if I can do something technical to fix it, I will.

<3 <3 <3
@ctg867 I have to rant about this, however late in the game I am. Holmes, patronizing? REALLY? He seems to have the most grounded point of view of any human being I've had the pleasure of reading/listening to. The greatest strength in his commentary on video games is that he has a very strong stance on what he enjoys and believes makes a good video game but at the same time strongly empathizes with an opposing point of view. Have you ever actually listened to him or actually read what he writes? He embodies what makes destructoid such a great entity.
Also, fucking Trap Door! Hell yes! I hope you've researched at least a glimmer of it since Jim mentioned it Jonathan! Defined the minds of many young artistically receptive British children of the late eighties/early nineties. Willy Rushton did the voice work on the show. He's dead now. Alas, the influence of his work on the world as a playwright/screenwriter is immeasurable.
The last few episodes have been great. The best new segment is when Jim leaves the podcast momentarily and has Holmes to talk all by himself. I would listen to a 2 hour Jonathan Holmes solo podcast. I can't understand how anyone can dislike Holmes or think he's a snob.
second time my question was in podtoid. It makes me hapy, how sad.

YOU MENTIONED THE STANLEY PARABLE?

I LOVE YOU JIM STERLING.
Dude, the xenomorph queen is awesome to see in person. They had one of the actual models set up in a duel with the skip loader at The Franklin Institute when I was a kid, in this big exhibit on practical cinema effects.

Given that my age was still in the single digits, I'd never seen Aliens before, and they'd set it up with footage from the fight running on a TV and in a dark room with a yellow warning light flashing for effect, I was pretty much scared shitless, but I still remember being impressed.
I think Jim should use the Skeletor voice in the Jimquisition. He does a lot of voices in his show, and I think Skeletor would be a great sort of peanut gallery side character that voices just plain ridiculous opinions much like he did this week on Podtoid.

Also, I totally agree with Holmes about Zelda. LoZ is my favorite game series out there, I found Skyward Sword completely charming and unique, but I admit that there were times that I was like, "time to do the volcano dungeon, wonder whether I'll get the bow or the hookshot in this one." I mean the game was very engaging and had some really cool story parts, but some parts of it are just getting old. It's a shame because so much in that game was unique and new, but so much of it wasn't that I can't really say it enthralled me. I almost want to be thrown into an entirely new world again like in Majora's Mask or Wind Waker to shake things up. But with the way the Zelda tropes have been getting more and more set in stone lately, it almost seems impossible. Like the whole rule of three dungeons -> story event -> harder dungeons, or the idea that each of the first three dungeons should be preceded by an overworld puzzle portion (light spirits in Twilight Princess and trials in Skyward Sword). They've been getting implemented more and more consistently with each sequel.

On that note, Skyward Sword really mixed things up with the final portion of the game, which really redeems it if you stick around through the whole thing.
Is it audiophilia or not?
I think Holmes got some volume compensator at his side, as sometimes he speaks so loud it crackles the sound, and then goes almost unhearably low for a period of time.
After that it slowly increases the volume again.
This doesn't happen at Jim's side as he clearly can scream like a pig without breaking the sound equipment.
Holmes: check your tech! :)
@ Cerun

I'm glad he mentioned it, it got me to go check it out. Pretty interesting game.

Destructoid's 2012 budget desktop guide

Last year, in preparation for Battlefield 3, Alex Bout created a basic part list that could run the game with moderate settings and a solid frame rate. This year, I wanted to see how much further we could push the specs on more or less the same budget. I was pretty surprised by what I found.   more
