PAX: Warren Spector compares Epic Mickey to Deus Ex

PAX: Warren Spector compares Epic Mickey to Deus Ex photo

Okay?

That was my first reaction when Warren Spector compared his upcoming Epic Mickey 2 to his legendary masterpiece Deus Ex in a PAX sit down I had with him earlier today. Actually, it was more of a huh? But then the outspoken, talented designer started explaining himself and I started to get what he was saying. Well, I sort of got what he was saying.

Warren explained that in Deus Ex, players play the way they want and the game changes based on your choices. If you choose to play a certain way, the game adjusts to that style. Choice is important. In Epic Mickey 2, you can play the entire game with paint and not thinner (meaning befriending enemies rather than destroy them), just as you can complete Deus Ex without ever using a gun.

He went on to talk about how player choice and actions are the driving force of Epic Mickey 2, just as they were in Deus Ex. While admitting the stakes may not be as high in Epic Mickey 2, he believes the player is making similar choices on how to proceed as they did in Deus Ex.

Aesthetic- and gameplay-wise, the two games could not be more different, but Warren insists on empowering the player in Epic Mickey 2 just like in Deus Ex. But this time it is with a paintbrush and not a gun.

A bold comparison, sure, but I have to admire and respect Warren's love of videogames and player interaction.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Here's the difference: I will never ever play Epic Mickey 2. Because it's Epic Mickey 2.
Hey man if i had made Deus Ex (along with what i must assume was a marvelous team behind him) i would open every conversation with "They man, i fucking made deus ex"

And id have the theme tune constantly playing around me.
He's a great designer and Deus Ex was a great game... I just wish he hadn't started getting all preachy lately about violence in games. Just... make your own games and let others make theirs.
Epic Mickey was one of the worst platformers I've ever played. I look forward to Epic Mickey 2: Just As Good As Deus Ex No Really I Swear Edition.
Ya know...if this game was called Augmented Mickey 2: Stealth Assassin, I might seriously consider picking it up at some point.
The man needs to stop reliving past glories and let his games stand on their own. Don't tell me I should like your game because I liked your last game.
I guess, but Deus Ex had more than two options through an environment. Epic Mickey is literally Thinner or Paint. In Deus Ex, I could shoot, hack, talk or stealth. It created a far different level of immersion.
Holy crap that is not a selling point for this game! Who the fuck wants Epic Mickey 2 to be more like Deus Ex?
while i respect him for creating the "Deus Ex" franchise.

the first game is just bad(IMO)

the concept, lore, themes HOWEVER were amazing and well ahead of it's time(well aside from MGS)

the executions were horrible, the map lay out is good and awesome, but just trying in to go all stealth is cumbersome and frustrating.

i really REALLY REALLY LOVE the concept of the game, being able to have a choice to either just pure stealth, hack all the way through, finding other places to infiltrate, mutltiple ways to kill the boss(the boss fights was clunk and not fun, but the choice to be able to kill them right away from the mid game is amazing)

the gunfire however is just BAD.

i understand that they want us to level it up more for efficiency but damn this is just bad.

if they gave us the choice to be able to go go either guns blazing or stealth, at least make the other choice much more efficient.

even Half Life were able to get the gun recoil right.

im at 31 hours(on steam) and i can't even bring myself to finish it(started last june 2011) took me a year to play it, and sometimes it can ve discouraging on playing this.

still im grateful for this game, Metal Gear Solid Ground Zero will definitely take some notes on it(though more onto Human Revolution style, which is MUCH better)

still he hasn't done alot since the first Deus Ex though.

heard Deus Ex Invisible War was bad(still bought the GOTY along with this as a bundle)

Dishonored seems to be the evolution of Theif and Deus Ex.

but im just not a fan of 1st person :\

i'll try it though.
I think he just needs to stop sniffing the paint thinner. ;)

He sounds like he's justifying himself at this point because while he made a game like Deus Ex in the past and a lot of people liked it he no longer makes that kind of game any more. I think it's becoming tiresome really.. he should focus on the strengths of what he's making now instead of doing this or bashing games that have bullets and blood instead of brushes and paint or the people that make games with bullets and blood.
In order to watch free movies online in great worth, not surely go to the movies because you can note them at habitation in eximious standing, because you force the moment to watch over hd movies online seeking you in a genteel and relaxing atmosphere. Peradventure you objective do not secure for the nonce at once to retreat to cinemas and rectify your common plan of sessions for a watch movies online.
I never asked for this.
I just want the 3ds game.
Wake me up when Epic Duck Tales is out.
But you basically use the same mechanic to "befriend" your enemies: point and shoot.
If the game would allow for different playstyles, that would make it empowering - yet the only decision you make is: paint it green or paint it blue.
Unfortunately Epic Mickey was horrible and he said the same things about it. It was near unplayable.
Nobody believes you anymore Warren.
@PrinceHeir:
Dishonored is Unreal Engine 3, so a mod or something for 3rd person might be possible. Borderlands 1 can easily be played 3rd person on PC with just a simple console command.

I'm keeping my hopes up for this game, it looks much better than the first. Really hoping it can capture some of that classic Mario64/Banjo Kazooie gameplay.
Stupid comparison. You could literally have picked ANY game that allows for multiple play styles and significant player choice. He's just trying to draw attention to his title and say something controversial. Just talk about the game. Sell me on why I should want to play it (because currently I don't) with something more than a poor analogy to a classic game.
Buying this for PS3 (to use regular controller and Move) and also for the 3DS. Yay.

Also, Deus Ex "bad"? Malarkey. Invisible War was infinitely disappointing as a sequel to the game changer that was Deus Ex, but it was still a good game. And Human Revolution, which is from a completely different developer, is stupendous.

Can't wait for Dishonored since it melds Deus Ex and Thief, two of Ion Storm's classics, into one.
I second what Phil said
Super Mario is like Deus Ex, because I could stomp on the goombas, light them on fire OR not jump on them at all.
Am I doing this right?
Isn't thus just going to be a dumb musical? I can't even watch the south park movie because it's a musical.
@Tekbunny Yeah musicals are dumb, video games are for kids, rock music turns you into a rapist and D&D; is satanic worship.

Your intelligent position on this subject puts you in good company. DO you try to fight guys on the street in case they think you're gay?
