Nintendo announces 'Nintendo TVii' (Update)

[Update: Trailer for Nintendo TVii has been added.]

At their Wii U press event this morning. Nintendo announced "Nintendo TVii," an interactive way of watching T.V. on your Wii U GamePad.

In the demo, the Nintendo representative was shown scrolling through various television shows through live T.V., TiVo, Netflix, and Hulu. Each user's experience is personal, as displayed through their Mii in the corner of the screen. You can choose favorite shows, make recommendations, and chat with friends while watching.

The social interaction of this entire experience was really pushed during the live demonstration (polls, emoticon reactions, etc.). "Nintendo TVii is changing what you watch and how you watch."

Personally, I will probably not use this very often (I say that now until I totally get sucked in once I have a Wii U), but this is a smart move from Nintendo. I can genuinely see many families around the world loving the simplicity and convenience of this. Also, it's free with the system!

What do you think? I can already tell this is going to be a very polarizing addition to the Wii U. Let's discuss! Will you watch the finale to Breaking Bad next summer on Nintendo TVii?

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

I had to switch to the Japanese stream while they talked about this. Incredibly boring.
Merging my media together into an easy aggregated interface is actually really important to me. Now I no longer need to watch a trailer in vudu, check netflix to see if its there etc etc...Also, I can watch the Vikings lose on the bigscreen and track all the other football games on the gamepad. Win for me.
I'd use it if I could plug headphones into the controller.
Dont totally understand how it works but I have internet access without tv access in my room and if this would do that Id be all for it and at the price of free Id be very willing to try it out
I'd rather have a dedicated app than a jack of all trades and a master of none.
Hmmm...sounds intriguing, but I want to know more re: live TV. What cable providers are supported, how does it work, etc.
@BomberJacket:
But it has a heaphone port...so...?
My first response was, "Wow, that's cool."

Then I realized that I already have this niche filled by.. well.. my smartphones and laptop. Also, I'll probably be getting a tablet in the next year, and most families I know already have a decent mix of tablets, laptops and smartphones. Mind you, these aren't rich families.

It's a nice little thing, but.. meh.
Interesting overall, but not a huge deal for me.

Today was a good day.
Can't argue that price but I will stick to Steam's big picture.
Neat but the name is rather painful.
If it has upnp it'd replace my playstation
I think it's really cool. I'll probably only use the social media stuff for sports and maybe sometimes drama shows ("OMG HANKS POOPING AGAIN!!! #BREAKBERD"), but the ability to save shows and channels looks awesome.
Can you watch tv on the gamepad itself? Or is it just info on it? Can someone please tell me?
More variety would be awesome, need that world football in my life...
Video games, ladies and gentlemen!
At first I was "meh," but the way they're bringing all these services together under one interface is pretty slick and forward-thinking.
Seems like a cool idea in concept. Especially for a home console to adopt. I'd like to see how it works in practice though.
I like that it organized by show instead of service. With PS3 360 iOS Android and set top boxes you get a netflix app and an amazon app and a hulu app and what ever else and then you have to switch between them which is annoying for people who know what they are doing and a completely pain for people who don't.

If it works as well as it looks and you can search across all those services at once than NTVii will be better than anything else out there. In fact I'm more excited about that than anything else they showed.
I'll echo others' questions. Do you stream live TV through the device? Or is just a compilation of the channel guide and Netflix? Does this steam live TV into the tablet? Does that mean there's a cable and satellite tuner in the console?
I guess it's kind of neat for watching sports.Something like the Formula One 2012 timing iPad app on the controller would be really cool to have while watching F1. If it was compatible with Dish Network I would be a little more receptive - it would be cool if I could keep the show on the TV and view the guide and DVR recordings on the controller.

As it is now I'm passing.
Probably not available in Canada! How long will they update these interactive features? Between Smart Glass and TVii who the hell is going to do all these jobs?

That fucking horrible radial menu for ALL features is a terrible idea. Makes it non-gamer unfriendly.

The fact that it doesn't try to BE a DVR with say a harddrive attached is a HUGE FAIL if it could do that then"TVii" would be useful, this current state? Fuck this.
As someone who shares the TV with his wife, this thing is great. She can watch her reality shows, I'll watch some random movie on Netflix or my Lakers (that is, if it's live TV), we stay in the same room and interact when necessary. Throw in the practicality of the search fucntion (by show rather than channel) and Facebook/Social media aspect...it just seems like a practical solution to the "too many gadgets, too many apps" issue.
so dumb. i hate features like this. isnt this why i have a set top box for my tv? why would i turn on 3 devices to watch my tv instead of just my tv and cable box? and how does this work if you dont have paid for services. pointless.
@ElektroDragon: Stop shilling Gamestop in the comments. You did it in the other thread too. Hell, for all I know, you're a paid poster, but if you are you aren't very good at hiding it.
For people who use lot's of video services, this will be fantastic. I only use Netflix, so it is about the same for me.
This might actually be a smart move on Nintendo's part, allow an external library from USB HDD or Network with good format support and and nice GUI... Could be a winner.
Hmmm, interesting idea here.
My knee jerk (or just jerk, if you want to think I'm being an ass) reaction to this is that Nintendo's trying to nip at the heels of what the 360 is doing (or, again, vice-versa depending on who you ask).

Thing is, this -may- actually be the first thing they've said about the console that has me thinking positive. Controller just seems made for this sort of things, and much less for games.
I wouldn't use the interactive stuff on the GamePad, but having everything together in one place will be nice, as well as the individual profiles.

One question though, does the DVR have to be TiVo, or can we use the one we got from our service provider? They didn't really say one way or the other.
This video makes the console that much more appealing to me. It looks like Nintendo has learned a thing or two about interface and digital services!

Oh, I love how people are ripping on something that could be a wonderful addition to their TV experience, given that they give it a try. Leave it to the internet.
will wait and see :D
this is breaking bad's last season, dumbass. why the hell would I watch it next summer?
Although I don't watch much modern nor mainstream TV, this is a cool idea, (and gives cable companies a run for their money, especially since it's free) but doesn't this defeat the purpose of the family watching TV while you play a game on the touch screen... or maybe the WiiU can do both?

I was excited about watch Youtube (and supposedly other video sites) on WiiU... but then I heard that Nostalgia Critic is being cancelled. Not that I watched it as much any more anyway.

Aliens: Colonial Marines dev diary promises authenticity

Developer diaries really make me cringe. They're really just a studio masturbating on camera for a few minutes. It's especially bad with this Aliens: Colonial Marines one, because really the underlying message is, "We met Ridley Scott and you didn't, f*ck you!"  Still, there's some cool Aliens stuff in there for fans. Watch it if you want.   more
