Jimquisition: Resident Evil 6 IS survival horror

Jim Sterling, Reviews Editor
3:00 PM on 10.08.2012

Resident Evil 6 has been criticized for abandoning survival horror and indulging its new fetish for Hollywood action. However, we may be jumping the gun by claiming Capcom's turned its back on horror -- Resident Evil 6 is ALL about the fear, provided you look at it the right way.

Fortunately I have eyes that see further and better than a mere mortal. Let me explain it.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

quick, someone make a managment that is about running a failing franchise. You begin with once single concept but the second you add a second feature a clock will start to tick down. The goal is to add features that compliment etch other as bad as possibly and see how long you can survive... but you can never win.
The horror is the gameplay.
Game is such a festering pile of shit. As someone who loved all of the Resident Evils( even 5)this shit is horrible.
"Capcom is survival horror"

Fucking deep, dude. Pass the milk.
truth!
I'd take Jim over either of the talking heads we got. Jim wouldn't know what the fuck he's doing, but that's better than these monkeys who make things worse seemingly intentionally.
Brilliant. loved that rant around the 3-4 minute mark. "Explosions! QTEs! T-Rexes!" Such a fucking mess like. Replaying RE2 on PSN. It's so tight and focused
"Cacophany" does pretty much sum RE6 up. Even if RE5 took a few wrong turns it was still a focused effort and hard to call bad - it just abandoned survival horror.

RE6 abandons focused efforts.
Down jones the milk for the 'conomy romoley, romoley, romoley.
Jim, all babies are fuck babies.
I was genuinely worried for a second. Forgive me, Jim.

So...RE6 is a meta? XD
Sad, but true... I've really been sticking to portable and downloadable games these days because that is where good ideas seem to happen due to the lack of mountainous budgets.
SPOILER ALERT!!! I agree with what Jim says but that's no reason to excuse gratuitous spoilers without an alert.
@Sweet Surrender

Thanks for the warning.

Personally, so far, I think it's pretty darn good (ignoring the retarded way the franchise has "evolved").
played the demo.
the Leon bit.
couldn't be bothered going onto the other bits.

what the hell was with all those stupid quicktime events?
and where was any semblance of a plot?
by the way, anyone want a good game? try Tokyo Jungle.
@tremault

Honestly, I've only come across maybe 2 intrusive "QTE" in RE6 so far (finished Jake's and a bit past halfway on Chris) where it actually caused me to die. Those classic split-second, out of f***ing nowhere QTE's that nobody enjoys.

Everything else so far has been surprisingly sparse and sometimes even adding to the experience. I honestly don't get the big deal with the QTE's. Certainly not as prevalent as your God of War's.
Well that was amusing, and I agree in full.

I got worried when I noticed a lot of people from other industries started getting hired into this one a while back. Like people from coca cola and such. I saw it as a bad omen back then.
This episode can apply to so many folks in the industry. I mean fuck just look at SEGA, sitting on a massive mound of fantastic IP's while terrified of anything that isn't Sonic.

RE: RE6... It feels like they designed the game based off of the description of someone who hated the originals. Shitty camera? Check. Clunky inaccurate controls? Check. Granted I didn't feel that way about the originals so maybe with some time and dedication I could like the game more. Too bad it puts a huge emphasis of running around like a spazztic retard while jumping and diving into hordes despite aiming with the right stick being vital to connecting hits.
As usual I can't watch the above yet, and let me be clear my reasoning for saying what I'm about to isn't to pass the game off as a good one, but I've come to the conclusion myself that the game is survival horror -but only on the loosest fringes of the term.

Reason being that ammo is so scarce for gameplay that really does want you to shoot everything THEN limits you to the amount of melee you can do with a stamina bar, almost has to be survival horror in some way.

Even in the titles section they have a counter for "Times run out of ammo" or some such, and you don't even get the title till you've done it 50 times. Which means they're expecting you to do this A LOT, while making the enemies and partner AI so cheap that they'll just over hover over you so they can either kill you outright or just not help (Piers is the worst), respectively.

Biggest problem though is the gameplay being more shooter then "run away" even though more times then not I've had to run when I really felt like I shouldn't have had to (and died when I really shouldn't have had to), and the story, which really leaves something to be desired, since its exactly what Jim said: Its as depth-less as a Michael Bay movie. If the game play was different and the story wasn't the way it was, we'd probably have another RE4 on our hands, but they didn't go that way, so we don't.
The 3DS Resident Evil was my first ever RE, and till now, what I've seen from RE6 did not turn me off.
Even if the gameplay is not that good, if there is a nice story, that might be enought for me. Gonna get it on a sale tho, just for security reasons.
Jim, I love you so hard right now. SO. HARD.

Oh, and those "gratuitous spoilers"? As far as I can see, it boils down to one boss fight. So I don't think you should worry too much.
Hey now, I actually know the author of The Dark Divine personally, and she's pretty good and a really awesome person.
I AM OFFENDED I'LL NEVER WATCH JIMQUISITION AGAIN WAH WAH WAH

Good points, though, as usual.
After watching the Gametrailers Invisible Walls podcast, it's quite nice to see someone who accepts that there are other opinions besides his own that are just as valid, and quickly moves on to bigger, more important and quite sobering points of discussion beyond "is this game good or bad?"
I'm still puzzled with most of the complaints this game gets. QTEs? Aren't worse than in 5, heck, in 4 they were loved, because hey, you've got to be on your toes even while watching cutscenes. You can even equip some skill thingy to avoid a couple of them basically.

"Survival Horror"? What defines this term anyway? Gaming genres are loose - at the very least, and everything that made RE 1-5 a "survival horror" (if they ever were) is still around. I'd rather put the sticker "survival horror" onto it because of the storyline it tries to convey.

There are even complaints about lacking ammo, which is hilarious if you think of it: It's too actiony... because you shot all the enemies instead of trying to run sometimes... now you got no ammo... which is... also bad, wait what? (Besides: Playing on normal and lacking ammo means you're just a bad player and really learn to play and headshot and melee the enemies which is a staple since RE4 - or play the amateur mode, it's even there). As for the horror aspect: Resident Evil 1 and 2 were scary and horror-y. Because I was 10. RE was never about "horror". That's Silent Hill's job (if it's not screwed up, that is...), all Resident Evil ever had were jump scares and a horror-esque topic and gory scenes, that's all.

I give any critic the somewhat loose controls - as far as exact walking/running goes - but everything else is hyperbole. If this game is bad, then so is the Uncharted series, which is nothing more than a Michael Bay movie as well (or any MW part - if you don't think of the singleplayer as nothing worth mentioning). Almost the same quirks, arguably more beautiful and better controls, but I'd never argue that RE6 surpasses any of the Uncharted entries, because it doesn't. But it's not crazy far behind.

But here I am again, rambling and arguing on the internets for no reason.

I like it. If anybody's still on the fence about it and liked RE 1-5... just play it. There are at least two campaigns (with the length of other RE parts) which come closer - thematically and moodwise (is this a word?) - to older REs, no reason to not enjoy those. If you don't like to... you know... not like stuff. Coz that's cool, too.
That was a decent episode. Some good points here and there.
Playing Resident Evil Remake on Gamecube now. After experiencing RE6, it's a travesty that Capcom has forgotten how jaw-droppingly tense and exciting and GOOD the original Resident Evil games were. They had focus, conviction, and weren't afraid to trust the players to figure it out instead of holding their hands and saddling them with mandatory co-op.
The fast-paced rant bit felt like it was lifted directly from any one of many Charlie Brooker hissy fits. Can't think of a better compliment really, nice job.
They covered up chris's gorgeous triceps. That is deserving enough of all the criticism. What's next! disposing of heihachi mishama's abs....YOU JAPANESES BASTARDS!!!!!!!
Jim, I think my head aspolded.
I was licking my jello pudding frozen mold of your face Jimmothy while wearing my black trenchcoat, THIS IS HOW WE MUST WORSHIP!
This was the best jimquisition ever...

I don't think Jim is ever going to top it.

It was that good.
political commentary =]
@Silent Protagonist: Actually it's bad. Real bad. So bad that it's funny and enjoyable. The story that is, also boulder punching.
Good stuff. The crippling fear the AAA industry is living under is becoming overbearing, and RE6 is the perfect example.
Guess I'm one of the few who has actually enjoyed the game.
I think that, if anything, they're going to sell less copies from making Resi 6 the way it is. I'm sure as hell not buying it, and that's coming from someone who liked the fifth one. Resident Evil 4 is easily one of my favourite games of all time, and I'm so sad to see it go to this.

Worst Resident Evil by far. Graphics are brutal, QTE's are a pain and rope climbing.....oh my dear heavens. Rope climbing!!!!
Excellent points Jim!

I still have saved the article where the producer says "we have to be more like call of duty". Fucking assholes man. Let them rot, at least we have Lone Survivor.
I just want to quote my friend here...
"Yeah- I don't know what it is about RE. I played 5 when it first came out, and i remember really liking it, and I played all of them leading up to 5--I still have my original PS1 discs--I'm just not as jazzed about 6 as I was for the others. And yeah, I'll probably play it at some point. Maybe it's because It's been around for so long. RE1 came out pre-9/11, before the second Bush administration, before anyone could even conceive of what the fuck an Xbox 360 or a PS3 could do, back when beepers were a thing. I look at RE like Quiz Kid Donnie Smith. Smart kid, ahead of his time, but grew up and found out that nobody really thinks a smart adult is very interesting."
@Nick: Your not arguing cause you want attention (sarcasm)? You might want to go re-read that section of the review about ammo, that isn't what he's talking about. You need to be more clear in your third paragraph about what you mean is hyperbole.
great fucking video, very clever. I agree with your statements and opinions.
Didn't watch, probably never will.

I rented 6 from gamefly, and I just don't see where the hate comes from. Oh, actually I do. The Cawadoody kiddies don't have a developed sense of taste in gaming, which is why they eat up shit like Deadly Premonition.

Mmm, deep throating warm shits. Makes sense considering how much Jism love cock.
@Spaz

Nah, I guess i really want to bring some attention - not to me though, more to the disservice this game is met with.

I haven't been talking exclusively about Jim's review here, but even in his review I can find exactly the complaints about ammunition that I've listed here. It's simply not true that there is not enough - and neither is the melee overpowered, since you will run out of stamina pretty fast if you can't soften the enemies up with some dazing shots.

About hyperbole:
right here from the comments, @cimerians: "Graphics are brutal" - this is just silly, these are some pretty good AAA graphics with great animations and the usual lack in the textures department, which is flatout normal for almost every single console game (bar Uncharted perhaps...)

and then from Jim's review:
"we have gunfire that knocks them to the ground with such laughable regularity that you'd be forgiven for thinking the drunken physics from Grand Theft Auto IV had made an unscheduled return" - yeah, if you're running through the open streets, and neither using the recover-mechanic nor the pretty useful shooting while prone (which is also bashed, because options are bad), which let's you a) avoid most shots, and b) stops you from... well.. getting prone.

"There are a few other different enemies, such as dogs, insect mutants, and undead that scream to attract more zombies, but we've seen these ideas before in all sorts of run-of-the-mill games." - name a single one that doesn't cite a RE game itself. Plus this directly contradicts his bemoaning of the addition of regenerating limbs, which is new. I don't want to go on about the fight vs. the snake or the crawling or bee j'avos, I guess he just new all such stuff from all the run-of-the-mill games I haven't played.

" The upgrades players can attain are hardly noticeable in the game" - yeah, I get it, he picked the wrong one. While the balancing *might* be off (I don't know that, haven't tested them all), having twice the amount of stamina is a game changer, so is your AI partner being able to dispense some health tablets if needed.

There are sure to be more of these passages, what they all have in common, is that he picks on some issues he has with some of the game's aspects and bloats them to the point of some kind of silly exaggeration. No, I don't get knockbacked all the time and yeah, if I do it's supposed to be unnerving (because it mostly means I ate an attack I shouldn't have or I didn't recover correctly); no, I haven't seen these kind of enemies everywhere; no, the upgrades aren't unnoticeable, quite the contrary. And that's just his eloquent rambling, then there are guys like cimerians that just get into the slipstream and now suddenly the graphics are shit and everything else as well.

I know it's pretty meaningless to argue about it anyway, since gaming/scores (and even moreso with Jim's reviews) are about personal preferences (just look at Deadly Premonition and its score (a game which is awesome, by all means, by the way.)), but I simply can't lose the feeling that there's a lot of bashing for the sake of bashing going on here. It's not my GotY by any means, but RE6 is no broken mess, but a fun ride. All it tries to be. Nothing innovative, crazy, funky. Just some Michael Bay movie.
@Nick Done
Good show :)
This was a fantastic episode. What's funny, is all those Resident Evil 6 clips you used made the game look a lot more intense and fun than it actually was.

Like it was said in the video, a Resident Evil game will sell because of the name Resident Evil. Everyone knows what the series is and what its about, its one of the biggest franchises in gaming. There is no excuse for it being so generic.
gimme an egg!
Im sorry i cant support milk, its not good for adults :P
Well I enjoyed my play of Resident Evil 6 and I think a lot more people would like it too if it didn't have Resident Evil in it's title. Wouldn't be too surprised if the same people who hate it on it for being different than past Resident Evil game are the same people who hate Call of Duty games for being so similar to each other.
