Conventions: You just need to know where to look photo

[A few weeks ago, Dtoid community blogger Swishiee wrote a cblog talking about how he had let his shyness get the best of him during PAX Prime 2011, and how he was determined to make the most out of PAX Prime 2012. In this follow-up, he shares his experience at PAX Prime 2012, and his thoughts on our community in general. --Mr Andy Dixon]

About a month ago, there was a flood of cblogs questioning the state of the Destructoid community, as well as our community management team. To the people who were -- and still are -- in doubt of our community, all I have to say is this:

You just need to know where to look.

PAX Prime 2012 took place a few weeks ago, and I had the time of my life.

The afternoon of Day 0 started out slow, but picked up once I met up with Dtoider flintmech and started looking for people to hang out with. We headed to Elephant and Castle to grab a beer, which is where we ran into Mr Andy Dixon, Jon Bloodspray, King Foom, and Conrad Zimmerman. After conversing amongst each other for a few, we set out to meet up with Spencer Hayes and company at GameWorks. That was when the real party started.

As the night went on, dozens of Dtoiders made their way into the bar of the arcade to hang out; it was like a family reunion. Each subsequent day at PAX I spent the majority of time with these people, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Our last night together was a sad one. After I said my goodbyes to everyone and got back to my hotel room, I sat in the chair in the corner depressed for a while. Over the weekend, these people went from being my friends on the internet to being my family. I miss everyone a ton, and I can't wait for the next time I get to see them all again. All of you guys made my PAX 2012 the best weekend of my life.

The Destructoid community is what you make of it. If you're looking to make some rad friends with common interests, then you're in the right place. Get involved with the community by playing games with us during Friday Night Fights or Team Fortress 2sdays. Follow us and talk with us on Twitter. Post stuff in the forums and cblogs. We're everywhere, and we're one of the most inviting groups of people you'll ever meet.

One last thing. I'd like to give a special shout out to our community management team here. It might not be apparent, but these guys work pretty dang hard to keep the spam at bay, to respond to people with issues, and even to post comments in cblogs and interact with people around here. They even launched a rad new front page feature recently, where they highlight the top posts from the CblogRecaps every week. I appreciate you guys, both for who you are and what you do. We couldn't ask for a better bunch of people to help keep this community going.

Now then, how much longer is it until PAX Prime 2013?

And the community team loves you too, dude. <3

2013!
I'm so happy PAX Prime 2013 is going to be four days long. It's an extra day to spend with everyone!
I can't wait to meet you Swish.
I love this community. Having attended PAX 09, I don't think I could could have imagined a cooler group of people. The Elephant and Castle rocked, and I'm glad I was in the google groups, because they recommended that hotel for me to stay in. Then, going to Gamesworks with everyone was nuts! Seriously, best community ever!!!!
How much longer til 2013, indeed. If I could make both Magfest and PAX, dude, year of the forever.
I was going to say that the community team loves you too, but someone beat me to it. I love you Swishiee.
@Phil - Same here man. Let me know the when and where for the NARP you were planning soon and I'll be there!

@Arttemis - E&C; is awesome. I was telling someone that I wish we all had a portal of some sort so we could hang out there every night. It would be awesome.

@Nihil - Fuck yeah it would be!

@Spencer - <3<3<3
@Andy: You look like John Cusack put on his raping pants with that moustache.

I'll take my banning like a man and say this: It was worth it. Good day :p
HAHAH, SUCK IT, SPENCER.
And next year will be even better.
BECCY EATS BUTTS. I'm in every picture in this blog. SUCK ON THAT ONE CAINE!
Fuck I miss you Becky and Spencer.
Fuck I miss you Beccy* and Spencer.

(I keep spelling your name wrong. Me = doofus)
Aww, thanks Swishiee. This means a lot <3

@Phil

I'm speechless.
Damn I love PAX. I love yall. I love PAX and yall.
There are plans in the works for more awesomeness soon. Stay tuned. :)

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Now I need to get in on these... Yay for community!
You mention writing, doing FNF and Twitter, but nothing seems to work for me. I get maybe a few days worth of communication and then life takes over and people forget me. It really sucks.
It's not a coincidence that Andy looks like a man that gave ladies woman boners in the 80's, he's a attractive man.
Andy gave me a man boner from the future.

This is a great article, I love the surge of thoughts and emotions that the afterglow of a convention always brings with it.

Also, I should probably just legally change my name to Job Bloodspray.
*Jon

Dammit.
Congrats on the front-page promo, Swishiee! It was great meeting you at PAX! Can't wait to hang with you next year.

Also, I like how I'm like half-in those two photos. :P
Awesome!!!
Front page, fuck yeah!
"We're everywhere, and we're one of the most inviting groups of people you'll ever meet."

I'd never EVER dispute that quote. Ever. And wish I could make it to the conventions to meet up with you all (really wish I had a job, let alone the money, to do so). Seriously this is one of the finest places on earth, to me.

I do have one question though: Do you guys set a date/time/place to meet or what?

Cause the way Swishee makes it sound he happened to find flintmech and then they happened to stumble on everyone else at the bar, with things snowballing from there.

I just think that some of those doubters Swish talked about would (a big maybe, since there's really no telling with people) averted if there was more of a "Hey guys if you want to meet up and form a posse, we'll be here from this time to this time every day" sort of thing. Something more a long the lines of a community get together.

If you guys already do that though then these people just need to find a way to be better informed then, cause I don't really know what else you guys could do. I just mention it because Swish's story really make it seem like a lot of chance and happenstance.

Thanks to Andy and everyone else who makes this community happen though, even if I keep saying I want to get deeper involved (and keep chickening out on that) its really easy to see the effort you guys put into it, on top of just plain helping out people do random crap, like getting random achievements in Borderlands :)
Argh! I missed the picture :( Atleast I got to meet Niero, Hamza and some others at the pre-PAX party at Gameworks. Best weekend of my life too, and I can't wait to be back next year.

Dress up a bear as Mario in Tekken Tag 2 Wii U
