Ars Technica hates the PS3 too; Dtoid ready to take failed console off haters' hands photo

*First a public announcement* We'd like to post this message now for all the PlayStation 3 owners that are already over and done with, with the console: Please send us your disappointment since you hate it so much. We'll be more than happy to take it off your hands since it sucks so hard for you. *Announcement over*

OK, moving along. It seems that Ars Technica is joining the PS3-hate parade lately with their lengthy (and I mean lengthy) review of Sony's mean machine. Here's their conclusion wrapped nicely in bullet points:

The Good:

  • The hardware looks great, and runs nearly silently and very cool
  • Wireless controller is light and feels great
  • Great-looking Blu-ray movie playback
  • Price is low for a Bluy-ray player
  • A lot of multimedia options
  • Solid backwards compatibility

The Bad:

  • Terrible online store
  • Slow, unintuitive browser
  • No background downloading
  • Games continue to play even if you eject the disc; you have to manually restart the UI via the controller
  • Messy UI
  • HD scaler doesn't work right
  • Price is high for a video game console
  • No rumble, controller loses sync with system sometimes; little game support for motion-sensing features
  • Uninspired launch lineup

The Ugly:

  • Knowing that no one is actually playing this thing, every system is waiting in a box somewhere for the eBay profit
Thoughts? Agree, disagree? Would you like to unload your PS3 on us?

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

If I actually had a PS3 in my mits, I think I'd be too scared to complain. My empty wallet would force my brain into believing it's the best thing ever.
I'm tempted to buy one for a thousand bucks, but there's no games I want to play on it. I guess that explains the $3k crash!
2006 = WORST YEAR EVAR! (if your Sony)
never have i looked at a console on launch and thought to myself 'there is not one single thing making me want this console right now.' - until now. I realize the ps3 is a sleeping beast that may have its day in glory a year or four from now, but so the fuck what - it's the day 11/21/06 and reviewing the system as is i think it completely deserves all the bad reviews.

sure there are some quality things going for it, but you can find the same elsewhere for cheaper. you can't just not give out bad reviews cuz it's GONNA be good - you can't give out PHDs in college cuz a valedictorian is GONNA do well - the system has to prove itself.

When the 360 was in the same spot a full fucking year ago it had much more to offer right from the get go, even if its ease of use and enjoyable online play was the majority of its boasting privileges. Did i mention it came out a full year ago?

Microsoft has been doing nothing but busting their asses since the launch of the Xbox to gain our trust and worthiness, and I'm finally giving it to them in full because i finally think they deserve it. i hated the xbox but things have changed and now ps3 has some work to do. things will change, but until they do sony deserves all the grief.

those are my opinions, and i've felt that way for months now and they still haven't changed. it seems like the majority of the ppl supporting the ps3 to no end are only doing so because it's GONNA be awesome, and they just know it. i agree, but i'm not gonna support it until it IS kicking ass.

That's like making Casino Royale a piece of shit, and saying meh, don't worry, it's just a few million to make - we'll make the new Bond series good later. Casino Royale needed to kick ass and i thought it did - PS3's longgg awaited opening from the PS2 lords needed to kickass, and it did no such thing.

(breathe)

there. that sums up my opinions on the PS3 for all of 2006. sigh...
Man, that kid is DWARFED by that box.

...God I want one so bad. MGS4, you best not disappoint!
Honestly I have no interesting in the PS3, which I found very odd. I remember back in 2000 picking up my PS2 and thinking it was the greatest thing next to sliced bread. Come 2004 I picked up an XBOX and fell in love with the system. I was at this time on my 3rd PS2 (damn DRE), and was sick of having to buy new PS2's. Oddly enough just about 5 months ago I picked up a NEW one on eBay for 50 bucks, all in the effort to play all my old games. In just don't have an emotional investment in the PS3. It feels like a soulless hunk of metal and plastic, where as the PS2 felt like a gaming machine. The PS3 suffers from an identity crisis, trying to be everything to everyone, but not being any one of those exceedingly well. Kinda like the PSP, which currently collects dust on my dresser. I had hoped the PS3 would be fantastic but really I'm loving my 360 and have no interest at all in the games or the system. Sure I will miss out on FFXIII, the only damn thing on the system I want to play but given that Lost Odyssey an RPG that looks just as stellar will hit my 360, it's not such a big deal.

I think SONY is getting so much flack because they hyped the damn thing to be more or less the second coming of Jesus, but it turned out to be in same ways less the it's competitors machines.
i thought that there were tons of ps1 and 2 games that were broken on the ps3? that doesnt qualify as solid backward compatability in my book.
/claps for Fronz
solid backwards compatibility my ass theres over 200 games that dont work on it last i heard.
and some are good games that wont play on the ps3 that you had for ps2. i like all the game makers its more about the games then who is making them.
I'm with fronz completely. I used to be an xbox hater, but they have managed to win me over; the 360 is a good machine(don't like the xbox live charge, mind). The ps3 on the other hand has absolutely nothing going for it at the moment in my eyes. The only thing that's keeping me from writing it off completely is FFXIII way off in the distant future(note, we europeans have yet to even see a release date for FFXII).
I'll wait for it to cost in the €200 region. Until then, there'll be plenty of awesome ps2, wii, ds and perhaps xbox360 titles to tide me over.
I was pretty anxious to get a PlayStation 3 at launch, but when I failed to do so, I didn't feel so bad (I was going to scalp it anyway). I'll still grab one if the opportunity arrives, but after Christmas passes and there's no huge profit margin to be made on eBay, then why should I care? I will eventually own a PlayStation 3 to play with, but I'm in no hurry. There's no games at launch that I find particularly compelling anyway, I can wait until next year.

The Wii, on the other hand, I was really disappointed not to get one at launch, and mind you, I'm not convinced by it's motion sensitive controls. There's at least Wii launch games I want to play, but I can wait for Costco to get some more bundles together, which may be next year as well.

I'm fine with my Xbox 360 for now. I just got a GameFly account and purchased some Xbox Live Arcade games to play. Microsoft is taking care of its gamers, I just wish they'd release a larger HD already.
I do pity people who bought a PS3 and hate it, actually.

So many bought into hype. I'm not dismissing the PS3 here; what I'm saying is, many everyday people were interested in it simply for being "the next Playstation" and not for the nuts and bolts of what it is. They heard features and decided they wanted them without knowing the benefit they'd gain from the feature. ("What do you like most about the PS3?" "Blu-Ray." "What's Blu-Ray?" "I dunno.")

I can't fault them for not doing research; you basically have to stay tuned to gaming day in and day out to filter the facts from the hyperbole. Asking people they know results in "fanboy knowledge" more often than not, and I think everyone can agree that the company advertisements (for each system) speak in similar sweeping terms. ("It's incredible because X feature lets you do things you've never experienced.")

That said, I've done my research, I've tested each platform. And, in a similar fashion, if there are disgruntled Wii and Xbox360 owners out there, I'll unload your misery. (I'd negotiate a PS3 as well, but to be honest, it would be booted into Linux and not leave for many moons.)
"# Games continue to play even if you eject the disc; you have to manually restart the UI via the controller "

That's a bad thing? I wouldn't label it as a good thing, it'd be filed under who gives a fuck. Right next to knowing the substance that Han Solo was frozen in.
It was carbonite, you nub!
almost all the bad things about Playstation 3 except for the no rumble, can be improved on through software updates.
PS3? Great system. I doubled my investment in a three day turnaround period, less shipping and eBay fees.
I'm with Fonz all the way on this but, since I am selfish I really hope that either the PS3 or the 360 fails miserably and soon and turns into another Sega devoloping games for the winning system.

Serously the only difference between the 360 and the PS3 are exclusives and I im split between each offering -- and this is really annoying
hahaha! change of heart eh?
Agent

200 non working backwards compatible games is solid, there are over 5000 PS1-PS2 Games. Last i heard, the 360 could only play about 200 Xbox 1 games.
While I'm kind of hating on Sony right now for fumbling the whole PS3 launch ( and making it way too expensive for someone making $9/hr ), I'm still going to pick one up eventually.

Why? Because I'm more a fan of some of the third party developers than Sony and their systems. Like Insomniac, Square Enix, Naughty Dog, and Rockstar. Up until I heard about Ratchet and Clank for the PS3, I was leaning more towards the "not getting one" side of the fence. Now I'm sure I'll get one..... eventually. After the price has ( hopefully, though it's highly unlikely ) dropped, and I already have a HiDef TV, a Wii, and possibly a 360.

I know that I want all three systems, because there are perks to each console that appeal to me ( big focus on gameplay and playing with friends = Wii, Stubbs the Zombie and the Halo franchise and apparently awesome online play = 360, the next Ratchet and Clank game and hopefully others = PS3 ).

Oh, and I'll gladly take any rejected consoles anyone has that they don't want anymore. I've got a couch ( gotta get something the gf wants too -- yeah, she probably wears the pants, but I'm helpless when it comes to teh BOOBIES! )and a TV to save up for before I can even start thinking about a new system.
Sony has always been a creative but immensely proprietary company; often called stubborn & arrogant, and it's kinda true. It's almost like they anger consumers in the most obvious way, rather than subject themselves to a battery of questions for which they haven't already generated talking points.

That said, it's really all about sex.

I predict sony will win the "console war" because PS3 is just cooler. And the cool, arrogant guys always get the chicks, the good job, help in math class, etc.

Here's how it breaks down (with the help of my wife):
360 = Matthew Mcconaughey.
(hot & fun to mess around with, but not forever)

PS3 = George Clooney.
(Timelessly sexy. Kind of Blue. Great Wine.)
jeez, i guess she likes him.

Bill Gates?
(Why did you ask me that? I was thinking about George Clooney! You ruined it!!!)
jeez.

Kaz Hirai?
