Minecraft Xbox 360 update 1.8.2 - how to survive Survival Mode 2.0

Seven ways to get the better of the all-new Minecraft

Minecraft Xbox 360 update 1.8.2 has a fairly spectacular case of bipolar disorder. On the one hand you've got the peaceful vistas of Creative Mode, land of raw potential and zero risk. On the other there's the primordial horror of the expanded Survival Mode, an intensely picturesque hell-hole which now plays host to teleporting thieves and chronic starvation.

Switching between them is akin to dropping a hair dryer in the bath, and unlike Mel Gibson, you won't be able to telepathically glean sex advice afterwards. We're working on tips for Creative Mode, update 1.8.2's biggest new feature, but in the meantime, here's how to get through Survival mode post-update with all of your wobbly bits intact. Read the full contents list first, and don't forget our over-arching Minecraft Xbox 360 update 1.8.2 mega-guide.

1. Master your hunger

The first and most important thing to remember about the hunger system is that food no longer heals directly - it fills up your 20 point food bar, which in turn allows you to slowly regenerate health. So if you're getting the worst of a punch-up with some Zombies, shovelling down massive handfuls of pumpkin pie won't help. Hunger determines whether you can sprint, too, so don't jog around on empty unless you're absolutely confident you won't ever need to run away from anything, ever. Which you will. So just plain don't.

You can get by on the overworld by plucking apples (four points) from trees, but if you're heading into an abandoned mineshaft, it's wise to stock up on the superfoods. No, not edamame beans and bulgur wheat - roast porkchops and steak, both relatively easy to craft and good for a whole eight food points a portion.

If you're short of meat in the field, and you can't be arsed to assemble a furnace, try setting fire to a chicken - it'll cook itself to death (six food points). Don't eat chicken raw unless you're desperate, as there's a 30 per cent risk of poisoning. Mushroom stew (eight points) is another recipe to bear in mind, as you can craft it in your inventory by combining a Mooshroom with a bowl.

  1. Seriously can't wait for this update. It's gonna be schweeeeeet! Any chance you could add me to your friends list so I can come and play in oxm land pre and post update? Pretty please?

  2. I always try to take some seeds and bonemeal and some dirt with me underground and then you can grow some wheat at a pinch.Bread doesn't fill you up that much, but it is a good back up.Not sure if the new hunger bar will negate this to some extent.Either way can't wait for the update, come on MS get your finger out, lol.

  3. Think I'll be buying this come payday. With this update it'll be a lot closer to the PC version that I'm used to.
    Does it continually save yet?

The autosave feature was added a while back, second update I think.
Also you can change the time between saves or disable it if it starts bugging you.

  5. The new update also adds an autosave countdown feature, so you're not caught out.

  6. Edwin... this looks a bit brilliant. How much is it to acquire such greatness? There's cheeves included so I'm inclined to believe 4Js efforts are not going without pay, though the 1600 price tag may have covered this. If it's free I'm hugging someone.

  7. I don't think they are charging for it Bezza although i would pay for it if they were. All the ones for the pc have been free. Not sure but i don't remember anything about it costing anything none of the other updates have.

  8. I'd also pay, but the updates will start to have a price I believe, not sure when - this seems like the perfect point to start from a business aspect - offering what everyone would pay for - and with achievements I just thought; no one has actually said it's free yet.
