Super Mario Land 2 and Metroid II on their way to the 3DS

Some good news for the starved 3DS owners out there. Nintendo is planning to release Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and Metroid II: The Return of Samus to the eShop via the Virtual Console in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Super Mario Land 2 was one of the biggest games on the Game Boy -- eight times bigger than its predecessor. It also sees the first appearance of dastardly Wario, brainwashing and turning the inhabitants of Mario Land against Mario, and forcing him to find six golden coins scattered across to land to break the spell and reclaim his castle from Wario's tight grip.

Metroid II was the only game from the series to be released on the Game Boy, and pits Samus against the Metroid creatures on their own turf in an attempt to prevent the Space Pirates from obtaining and using them. Unlike Super Mario Land 2, Metroid II wasn't as well received as its original counterpart, and was often forgotten by many until quite recently. It also gave us those massive shoulders on her suit for the first time which has become a permanent feature for our beloved heroine ever since.

These may not be the new games utilizing the technology that many people bought the 3DS for. However, no one can deny the quality and timeless nature of Mario and Metroid, and I'm sure people would still appreciate the opportunity to play these classics today on their current handheld.

The games seem to be only confirmed for the UK right now, but I'm sure they will be confirmed for the US and Japan in the near future. In the meantime, check out the original Japanese ads for the games. They just don't make them like these anymore.

Legacy Comments (will be imported soon)

Oh hell yes. I remember, years ago, my cousin saying I needed to play Mario Land 2. I guess now I will.
FUCK YEAH!!!! Now we're talking. Super Mario Land 2 was so awesome, and I never played Metroid II even though I wanted to so badly. Guess I don't have an excuse anymore.
Im going to be all up in both of these games.
Still I want Nintendo to update the 3DS so that gameboy games instead of being black and white can have the fake color added like when you played them on a GBC
Is that metroid 2 remake done yet? :( oh well, I'll buy it on the 3DS. Now, give. me. SUPER. METROID! Though, they haven't even put NES games on the 3DS, it'd be hard to expect SNES games so soon. :P

Super Metroids the only metroid game I haven't played yet.
Ooh! How much i love old commercials! they're always so hilarious xD
METROID II!??!?!?!?!?!?!

It's the only Metroid I don't own!
both games are GB gems, played the hell out of them on its day :)
I just received two old Game Boys, a Fame Boy Color and a bunch of games like DK Land, and Kirby's Dream Land 2. With these and the games already on the eShop, I'm playing through all the classic good GB games. I still need to play both of these.
Good thing I literally just ordered a 3DS used off Amazon that has the ambassador program. News stories like this are going to make me very happy from now on :D
Awesome! I've never played either of these! :D
My eyes are bleeding with anticipation
@TysonQ7

I want a Fameboy.
Then I can be famous like I always wanted to be.
God I played the living hell out of Mario Land 2. I remember my hands getting so sweaty that the weird grilled back of the battery case was coated in weird sweat gunk. Only game that's ever made me do that.
Needs Kirby's Dreamland 2 and we're all set.
how about giving me some actual different 3ds games... not stuff on virtual console.... I'm not saying I wont get these, but seriously start working on some NEW games for once and stop making money off all the nostalgia.
Yay! Getting both Fusion and Metroid II on my 3DS. So, when do we get Zero Mission, the Prime games and a brand new 2D sidescrolling Metroid with fancy 3D effects?
I played the shit outta Metroid 2 when I was a kid. Nostalgia levels at 11!
I never beat Mario Land 2. THAT LAST BOSS.

Also I needed to play metroid 2, success!
Why did they never complete that Metroid II remake????
Finally something worth spending my money on eShop.
I never finished Metroid 2 as a little tyke, so this will be a great opportunity to finally do that.
I never played much of Super Mario Land 2. I'll give it a shot, but I'm way more interested in a release of Super Mario Land 3.
This Mario was pretty awesome for the time, I remember those huge sprites that was way better than the first one, not to mention the rad soundtrack.
Can't wait to play these 2 again.
I think I'm going to watch that Japanese guy (presumably drunk) trying to play the first Super Mario Land while I wait.
Super Mario Land 2's awesomeness has been trumped by me being able to play it on my Blackberry. Still, BBerrys don't emulate sound, so I guess I'll get to hear them tunes again.
Super Mario Land 2 was one of the first games I remember playing on the Game Boy. I'm so happy they're putting it on virtual console now! :D
Oh christ. Mario Land 2 is fucking amazing. I've never tried Metroid 2, but I'd love to finally be able to play it.
Mario Land 2? I'm game.
Metroid 2 is one of the most underrated games of all time. It is a shade more linear than the others, though if excessive backtracking makes your bunghole clinch, then I suppose it is a good thing (there is SOME in 2, but not nearly as much as the others).

Also, Metroid 2 was probably the creepiest and scariest of the Metroid games...the ambient soundtrack in some of the caves is fucking eerie as hell.
Mario Land 2 is certainly on the top three of best 2D Mario platformers. I love how the game is for the most part quite easy but in certain areas or bosses like Tatanga or Wario... it goes completely nuts. Metroid 2 was fine too.

I hope Nintendo really gets the 3DS rolling afther this.
About damn time! Super Mario Land 2 for Gameboy is one of my favorite Mario games of all time and I think it's also the most underrated of them all.
Woah, love these commercials ! Especially the Mario one, Yaay , now I finally get to beat metroid 2 !
These 2 titles are kind of a let down after they've already released Urban Champion.
I can play them both on my phone for free, and my phone is always on me and has a better battery. Still waiting, Nintendo.
I love both games :P But, i have never finished either of them :/
Yes I'm SURE they're coming, because we know that NOA would never deprive us of awesome games that are coming to Europe, right?
MANDATORY URBAN CHAMPION 3D comment

But I love Metroid 2, call me bias.
@Norpser

I'm fairly tired of the borderline trolls who can't read 3DS release schedules O.O
I aint starved............I have about 10+ original 3ds games.........

and overclocked in 2 days
Stealth: DSi games don't count as 3DS games
Metroid II is still my favourite Metroid game. The sense of isolation in it is disturbing to this day - it's also got some great title screen music.

I've still got my original cart, but I'm done for getting it on the eShop. As for Mario World 2? Never owned it, but borrowed it countless times. My only minor quibble with it is that it's a bit too easy.
I have been waiting for them to announce something about the Super Mario Land sequels. Never played any of them. I downloaded and beat the first one in about an hour...hopefully the two sequels are a bit longer than that...
Ohhhh, two good games right there! :)
Awesome! Metroid 2 is really good.
@Metal Mark= you can play DSi games on your 3DS, so why wouldn't it count? Not everyone has a DSi, so it would be the first time many people have the option of playing those games. Anyways, there are a bunch of games to play on the 3DS, most of which aren't 3DS original games, but if you can play games on it, why wouldn't you? I have about 20 games i want to play on my 3DS so i'm not bored. Also, there are a bunch of original games coming during the holidays and the VC and ambassador program should keep 3DS owners fairly busy for quite a while :P
tbh, Mario Land 2 was the best Mario game. so this is good.
I'll be buying both of these for sure! I think the old school Game Boy ports are my favorite part of the 3DS since I never owned a Game Boy until Game Boy Advanced, I had a game gear back in the day. I've still played all the great original Game Boy games at friends houses and such, but it's not the same when you don't own them.
Finally I get to Play Metroid II, It's the only Metroid game I haven't played.
Wario's first appearance? Must buy!
Spiderball ftw
