Million Lumens Campaign

The Million Lumens Campaign (MLC) seeks partners to improve lighting at "grandfathered" lighting sites in the Flagstaff area. We offer financial and technical assistance to owners of obsolete lighting systems to help bring them into conformance with current lighting codes. Our goal is to improve at least a million lumens  of obsolete lighting. By meeting both our needs and those of our partners, we all benefit by creating win-win solutions to unnecessary light pollution.

Why are we making this offer?

Stars Up/Lights Down logoQuality outdoor lighting that conforms to the Flagstaff and Coconino County outdoor lighting codes benefits everyone. Quality lighting puts the right amount of light in the right place, at the right time, and with the most efficient lighting type. Quality lighting increases visibility, safety and energy efficiency. It is cost-effective and attractive, while preserving the glorious starry skies for which Flagstaff and northern Arizona are famous.

What’s in it for our partners?

The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition evaluates their current lighting system ― fixture numbers and shielding characteristics, lamp types, wattages, locations, illumination and glare levels ― at no cost. the partner then contracts with a lighting firm for a design of an upgraded, compliant lighting system, initially at his own expense. Using this information, APS will provide, again at no cost, an outdoor lighting energy audit to evaluate the energy advantage of the new lighting system, and calculate the payback time.

When does the partner get the money?

If the partner then commits to completing the upgrade, thereby becoming an Official Partner in the Million Lumens Campaign, the Campaign will offer the option of either reimbursing design costs, up to $1,500, or hardware costs, up to $1000. Reimbursement will be distributed after successful completion of the upgrade. The deadline for completion of the upgrade is December 31st, 2002. Funding is limited.

Any other goodies?

The Campaign produces press releases and "before and after" documentation of the lighting at each site, and provides these to local news media. Finally, MLC Partners are invited to the annual Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce banquet, where they receive special recognition.
