Rtanj mountain is a limestone massif of the Carpatho–Balcanides Mountain System. Its eastern boundaries are defined by Crni Timok River and the Boljevac – Rujište line. The geological substrate consists of limestone, Paleozoic schists and sandstones. In the 700–950 metre belt, a narrow zone of dolomite is concentrated. The region has a continental mountain climate and is characterised by mixed fir and beech forests, as well as numerous meadows.

The dominant habitat types are mature mixed broadleaved and coniferous woodland and dry semi/unimproved (flower-rich) chalk/limestone grassland. The natural potential vegetation is Syringo-Carpinetum orientalis, Fagetum montanum, Colurno-Fagetum, Quercetum petraeae. In this region, 26 plant associations have been observed and 644 plant species detected on Rtanj, 25 of them endemic.

Jakšić and Grozdanović (2007) have contributed to the fauna knowledge of the region. The presence of 102 species has been registered, which can be considered as a satisfacory level of fauna knowledge. This PBA hosts nationally important populations of the following target species: Maculinea arion, M. alcon, Brenthis ino, Esperarge climene.

Protection & threats

The biodiversity of the Rtanj is relatively well preserved, with little anthropogenic pressure. The pressure is exerted mainly by logging and the collection of medical plants. Grazing and outdoors recreation are negligible.

According to national legislation, the region has status of Nature Reserve (1958), and is an object of the geological heritage of Serbia. It is on the potential Important Plant Areas in Serbia list and is potential Emerald Site.
