The digital pinball market is on the rise again, thanks to some savvy developments being handled by development teams.  No longer is it an embarrassing affair of crappy ball physics or lame table design.  No, these guys are dedicated.  Take Zen Studios, who have been pumping out quality releases with their Pinball FX 2 and Zen Pinball compilations.  And that's just the beginning, as Farsight Studios is preparing for its own pin assault later this spring with The Pinball Arcade.  Luckily for us, we got a taste of what the company has in mind...

One of the first genre’s I ever got addicted to was tower defense games, but for awhile now tower defense games have long been stale. For a long time now, the genre hasn’t seen any dramatic changes, but still provided quality games for its fans. Recently, the genre has escalated to new heights thanks to advancements in smart phone technology and the integration of app marketplace. Developed by Futuremark Games Studio, Unstoppable Gorg attempts to reinvent the genre, but costly design choices ruin a potential hit.

It's great to see that a lot of our classic favorites from yesteryear are finding a new life on the digital front, through App Store downloads for the iPad and iPhone.  We've already experienced such games as the Dragon's Lair series, Atari's Greatest Hits, and others, and Taito has been contributing with its own fair share of classics.  Their latest brings back the old Sega Saturn shooter Galactic Attack, also known overseas and in the App Store as Rayforce.  It brings back a much-needed dose of old school to the market...though it does so at a tremendous price.

This past Christmas saw Google overtake Apple for the lead in smartphones. And there appears to be no end in site with lower-priced devices entering the market throughout this year, including new NVIDIA Tegra 3 devices from Asus for just $250.

Ion Audio turned a Thinkgeek joke into an actual product in 2011 when it released the iCade game cabinet, which turned your touch screen device into a stand-up arcade unit.  It was a pretty cool device, to be honest, but it doesn't look like the company is done yet.  It's introducing three new peripherals this week that will turn your mobile device into a portable gaming unit...no matter what type of gaming you prefer.

"Basketball is my favorite sport, I love the way they dribble up and down the court." Every time I turn on my Xbox 360 and boot up NBA 2K12, I absolutely love hearing that song. Yes, I'm a lifelong basketball fan, and yes, I can name each and every single player in that intro scene. Even though I'm an all around gamer at heart, I truly enjoy playing sports titles the most--as I'm an avid sports fan as well. And while I've forgiven the NBA for their incredibly petchulant ways this past offseason, NBA2K12 was what keep my interest piqued. So, while NBA 2K12 is still fresh on my mind, I want to make some predictions/suggestions for 2KGames as we inch closer to NBA 2K13 later this year.

Back at E3 of this year, I wandered in to what I like to call the "doldrums." The little booths filled with smaller companies, people attempting to get you to sign up for a credit card amid all the hooplah and confusion. Once in a while, you'll stumble upon something interesting--as was the case with GAEMS G155 Portable Entertainment System. And while I was immediately impressed with the design of this case, and I still am, I can't shake the pricetag or get past the lack of practicality with the G155.

The bitter break-up between Rock Band developer Harmonix and the game's publishing arm at Viacom has been a messy one.  Following the somewhat expensive development of The Beatles Rock Band (due to licensing) and the release of Rock Band 3, Viacom unceremoniously dumped the developer, who purchased themselves back for $50.  Ever since, the companies have been battling back and forth over payments due over the series' release and royalties.  But it looks like the final decision could be leaning in Harmonix's favor...

To be quite honest, Sonic CD didn’t get a fair shake when it came out for the Sega CD nearly 20 years ago.  The platform itself was questionable between the stupid-ass games that came out for it, and a few hardcore fans were miffed that the excellent Japanese soundtrack was replaced by mostly bland rock tunes.  But leave it to Sega to validate its long-forgotten classic by giving it the widespread release it deserves across multiple platforms.  Along with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the game has also found a home on iOS devices – and, hold your horses, it’s good.
