Electronic Arts-owned BioWare’s first MMO game, Star Wars: The Old Republic just before Christmas, and already fan engagement is setting new standards for an MMO game launch. The game is the fastest-growing subscription MMO in history, with more than one million registered players since launching on December 20, 2011. BioWare and EA are limiting sales of the reported $100 million game into 2012 in an attempt to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all while further growing the community.

Hollywood and gaming continue to converge with Bigpoint’s Battlestar Galactica Online. Over 7 million registered users have engage in space combat, either fighting for the Cylons or for the Colonials in an assortment of spaceships from the films and television series. Now, Bigpoint is giving one lucky fan a chance to bring home a real life-sized Cylon.  By simply logging in and playing the game five times in December, gamers are entered into the sweepstakes. After successfully concluding one of the largest-ever Beta tests for an MMO, BioWare is now making final preparations for one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year as Star Wars: The Old Republic reaches stores on December 20, 2011 in North America. Gamers can get a head-start in this epic online universe through pre-orders. Players can use Early Game Access starting December 13. LOS ANGELES -- Riot Games today announced that over four million people play League of Legends on a daily basis, a 280% increase since Riot Games last announced the size of its League of Legends community in July 2011. With 11.5 million active monthly players and peak concurrency reaching 1.3 million, League of Legends enters its second competitive season as one of the top five PC games in North America and Europe with a registered player base of over 30 million worldwide. “It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch,” said Marc Merrill, co-founder and President of Riot Games. “In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.”

Chinese online game company ZQGame has partnered with Los Angeles-based SEE Games to create, co-invest in, and publish an original MMO (massively multiplayer online) game based on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s 2012 summer event film, Total Recall (2012), starring Colin Farrell. The deal represents the first time a Hollywood entity has partnered with a game company from China to develop an online game in-full.

NEVERDIE Studios, creators of the ROCKtropia Virtual World, a sophisticated, next-gen, cash prize-based game world with mythology drawn from pop culture, has launched a unique, in-game event for players of its recently released massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Hunt The Thing. This new movie-length MMO event is inspired by Universal Pictures’ current thriller The Thing, now in theatres nationwide. The game was developed using Crytek’s CryENGINE2 technology.

ANAHEIM -- BlizzCon has come to a close but there were lots of new and exciting revealations revealed by Blizzard. On the Starcraft II front, Blizzard developers showed off more from the upcoming expansion Heart of the Swarm as well as new multiplayer units and a preview of Blizzard DOTA. We caught up with Starcraft II Production Designer Chris Sigaty as he gave us a preview in this exclusive video interview after the break.

ANAHEIM -- After the Costume Contest at BlizzCon, comedian Jay Mohr kept the hits coming with the Intel Dance Contest. 31 competitors took the stage with a lot of interesting (and sometimes embarrasing) interpretations of various dances like the Goblin. With names like orc, troll and dwarf, you know this is a BlizzCon dance contest. Check out Mohr introducing the winners with highlights of each winner's dances after the break.

ANAHEIM -- Blizzard held the popular NVIDIA Costume Contest on the main stage at BlzzCon. There were a lot of cool costumes but Avery Faith and her Starcraft II Adjutant costume took the big prize. Comedian Jay Mohn congratulated Faith on her amazing costume as well as the two runner-ups. Christopher White took second place with his Paladin with Ashbringer costume and Justin Floyd took third place with his Deathwing costume. ANAHEIM -- Blizzard Entertainment enlisted actor Jay Mohr to host its annual cosplay costume contest. Fans dressed in elaborate costumes from hit games like Diablo III, StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Cataclysm. Amidst news surrounding the free Diablo III to all WoW gamers and a brand new expansion pack, Mists of Pandaria, fans celebrating gaming all around.
