Retelling the story of Yoshi's Island, Kamek has ambushed the stork carrying Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to their parents in the Mushroom Kingdom, but dropped Mario in the process... but this time the game begins here.
Gameplay
You begin with Baby Mario falling through the sky. Using the stylus, you can draw clouds that guide Baby Mario. Enemies fly around in the sky that must be avoided, and paths of Coins can be collected. If you draw a small circle of clouds, they form a bubble. Drawing bubbles around enemies will trap them and turn them into Coins, and you can move them around or flick them towards Baby Mario for him to collect. If you capture multiple enemies or Coins inside a bubble then they can be worth more.
After a while, Baby Mario will float down to Yoshi's Island and land on Yoshi's back. Yoshi automatically walks forward through a side-scrolling stage, and you must draw clouds and bubbles to help him avoid enemies and traps, and collect Coins. Yoshi has a new ability - by tapping the screen, he will throw an egg in that direction. Like in Yoshi's Island, the eggs will rebound off walls and can be used to hit difficult-to-reach enemies.
Game Modes
-
Score Attack
Taking place over a short level, your aim is to get a high score before Yoshi reaches the stork.
-
Marathon
Yoshi and Baby Mario travel across an endless stage, and your high score is based on how far Yoshi travels before losing a life.
-
Time Attack
Kamek's Toadies are carrying Baby Luigi away on the top screen. Your high score is based on how quickly you manage to dispatch them all. In this mode you will eventually run out of land, so you have to free Luigi before then.
-
Challenge
Similar to Marathon mode, but you are playing to a timer. By defeating enemies and collecting Coins you gain more time, and by taking damage you lose time.
-
VS. Battle
Two players have to defeat enemies and reach the goal before the other player. Clearing enemies may also make more enemies appear on the opponent's screen.
When you get a high score, you have to enter an icon instead of your name. There are three groups of icons to choose from: the second set is a lineup of characters, enemies and items from the Mario series, and the third set are 8-bit sprites of the same characters, enemies and items as they appeared in Super Mario Bros.
On the Marathon mode you will sometimes cross through a mountainous area where strong winds blow away your clouds. Pause the game and listen for a few minutes. Eventually Totaka's Song will play, mixed in with the background music.
