Celebrating Christmas

Where did you sleep on Christmas Eve?
I was at home in my own bed, for only the second time since I’ve been married. And since the first time I was eight months pregnant with Blaise and the house was crowded with my parents and siblings, I’m counting Christmas 2011 as our first At Home Christmas. It was just our little family and it was lovely.
Bryan and I got married in 2002, and we’ve taken advantage... READ MORE
Fill 'Em Up!

Do you do Christmas stockings at your house?
During my childhood we did. My mom filled them with the fun stuff for us - little toys when we were younger, hair bands and stationery when we were older - and since we didn’t get to open our big presents until after Christmas morning Mass, the stockings helped tide us over. We enjoyed them.
But now that I’m a mother myself and dealing with the fight against... READ MORE
Did You Shop?

I find myself having an unusual Thanksgiving celebration this week. As I’ve mentioned, I’m in Cambridge celebrating with Eric while Greg and Adam remain at home working/going to school. We had a terrific Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday thanks to the graciousness of one of Eric’s dorm mates and her family who hosted eight students (and one wayward Mom!). Yesterday, we treated ourselves to an afternoon... READ MORE
Scan or Pat Down?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Saturday, November 20, 2010
I’m scheduled to fly on Monday and am already dreading the long lines and crowds that I know will take place during the holiday week of travel. To make matters worse, everyone seems to be talking about the recent changes in TSA screening, the backscatter and millimeter wave scanning units, and the newly changed “pat down” procedures.
I unknowingly have been screened at least twice in recent memory... READ MORE
Craft Those Thanks
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Friday, November 19, 2010
I’ve often heard the idea of having everyone at your Thanksgiving table share something for which they’re thankful. I think it’s a great one - Thanksgiving is a holiday of gratitude, so it seems fitting to focus on that.
If you want to take it a step further, here’s a neat idea I recently came across: make a Thankful Tree. The instructions in this article suggest having guests at your Thanksgiving gathering each fill out a leaf for the tree, but I think it could also work well to do the whole craft ahead of time with kids.
My daughter is just four and I think the holiday is a little abstract for her, but I’m hoping that doing this might help make it more concrete. Happy (almost) Thanksgiving!
Fireworks at Home - Yes or No?
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Saturday, July 03, 2010
Every year around the 4th of July, consumer fireworks stands crop up in our city. “Safe and Sane” fireworks are legal here, and many families use them as part of their celebrations. Around our home, my ER husband always has his “doctor” hat on and our use of fireworks is pretty limited. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good sparkler just like anyone else - and we’ve used small legal fireworks many... READ MORE
Mother's Day and Mom's Night Out
Posted by Lisa Hendey in News on Thursday, May 06, 2010
This week, Sarah Reinhard joins Arwen and me for a true mom podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above). Reflecting upon Danielle’s recent post, we share a discussion about our Mother’s Day traditions and expectations, including having a lack of traditions. What do you want for Mother’s day? Do you have any Mother’s Day traditions? Does your husband take charge on that day or do... READ MORE
Holiday of Joy
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Family on Tuesday, April 06, 2010
Every day last week Camilla’s first question upon opening her eyes was, “Is it Easter yet?” immediately followed by, “How many days until Easter, Mama?”
In my early teen years I can remember feeling wistful when I realized that my favorite holiday traditions from my childhood had lost some of their appeal. I still enjoyed them, but my heart no longer leaped with joy at the prospect of finding the... READ MORE
Happy Washington's Birthday
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Monday, February 15, 2010
Some of you may remember from a post last year that there’s no such thing as President’s Day.
There is Washington’s birthday, however, and I hope you’ve had a happy one.
I was just writing a column about Washington and Catholics for my other gig and thought you’d enjoy this anecdote, especially as we approach Lent.
Washington was, of all the Founding Fathers, the “most likely to be interrupted at... READ MORE
Resuming Routines, Grinding Gears
Posted by Danielle Bean in Just me on Monday, January 04, 2010
Have you ever learned to drive a standard transmission? You know that horrible grating, grinding sound the gears make when you shift them incorrectly? I think I heard that sound today.
It was coming from my brain.
Like many others today, I am doing my very best to make a smooth move from the relaxed holiday schedule we have enjoyed the past two weeks to one that brings all of us back to school, back... READ MORE
