2011 has been one of the best years in video games. The year was stacked with high quality AAA games from start and end of the year. Every genre had it's highs and lows, but for the most part every genre had a great set of games for it's respected fan base. So with the year coming to an end, it's time to look back on the top five games of the year and give out our game of the year.

Naughty Dog may have turned the page on its smashing Uncharted franchise, but the Sony-owned studio is still working -  hand-in-hand with new steward Bend Studio - to bring you a prequel to the trilogy.

Downloadable content for Capybara Games' critically acclaimed Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is now available for all platforms (minus the Nintendo DS). It apparently adds 4 new generals - and their spells, of course - to the roster, off or online. At $2.99, publisher Ubisoft is presenting it at less than a buck a boss!

“Welcome. And congratulations. I am delighted that you could make it. Getting here wasn’t easy, I know. In fact, I suspect it was a little tougher than you realize.” Alright, alright, I didn’t write that. That charming prose belongs to Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything (2003). Awesome book. But in theme, these few lines apply greatly to your predicament in Rage, id Software’s heavily anticipated first-person shooter for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

For fans of BioWare's Mass Effect 3,the announcement of details is an event in itself, and one has been promised in next month's issue of Xbox World magazine. What might the Canadian giant have up its sleeve for one of the big games of 2011?

Party's are fun. They are substantially less fun if all the participants are dead. Even so, X-SEED's Corpse Party is looking to be a real treat. Remade for the PSP, this 2D adventure game has players exploring an abandoned elementary school haunted by the ghosts of murdered children. For more details, and to see the game's announcement trailer, read on. Be warned, though. This is not for the faint of heart.

There has been a certain appeal lately for games that have little to no story to them whatsoever. Gamers were astounded by LIMBO's ending, prompting huge discussions as to what the game was all about. Regardless of what their interpretation was, one thing was clear - people loved the game. If that game could receive critical acclaim, why not try that formula again? That's exactly what thatgamecompany intends to do with their upcoming title Journey, an adventure game featuring a wandering spirit making its way through a desert. A new trailer has been released showing more of the story, or at least what we could make out of it.

A lot of hype has been built around The Last Guardian due to Team Ico's previous successes in ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. After its reveal in 2009, it seemed that the developer was on the path of making another memorable game, featuring a young boy struggling to survive while befriending a griffin. However, beyond the game's delay until 2012, we haven't heard or seen much of the game since, leaving people to wonder if the game would be completed at all. That notion can be put to rest, as it was announced earlier today that the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection will feature new footage of the upcoming PS3 title.

“Metroidvania” games are hard to come by these days. However, fans of this exploration based adventure genre do occasionally have something to celebrate. Shadow Complex found its way onto 2009’s Summer of Arcade line-up and stretched the boundaries of what people thought XBLA games could be. While Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet may not be as large in scope, it no doubt makes up for this with a fantastic visual style and a unique puzzle-based implementation of the Metroidvania formula.

Have you ever wanted to know virtually everything there ever was that went into creating one of the worst movies ever made? Do you just yearn to know why normally smart people make some stupid decisions that result in a hot steaming mess of personified WTF? Do you at all wax nostalgic for the 90's, a time when bad movies had some type of special I don't know what that make them somehow infinitely enjoyable in a way that science has as of yet failed to quantify? Then baby, do I have an interview to show you.

Bastion is one of the stars of Microsoft's Summer of Arcade and for good reason. The storytelling and gameplay were top-knotch, and the art style was gorgeous, too. However, let's not forget one of the game's strongest pionts, its soundtrack. After making fans wait a few weeks, Supergiant Games has finally put the music of Bastion online for all to hear.

Bastion is, in a word, incredible. It takes the standard Action RPG formula and adds enough quirks and style to make it feel completely different. It shows the incredible potential of downloadable games as rich and rewarding game experiences in their own right.
