CAMRA- 'Cider pub accreditation scheme hits the 1000 pub milestone'
CAMRA National Cider and Perry Month, October 2011
  • Essex Pub is 1,000th to sign up to scheme
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has today highlighted a wave of consumer demand for real cider and perry as it announced over 1,000 pubs have now signed up to its cider pub accreditation scheme. The news comes in the build up to CAMRA's National Cider and Perry Month, taking place throughout October.

CAMRA's cider pub accreditation scheme was launched in 2009 to help increase the visibility and trade of pubs serving real cider and perry by signing them up to a national accreditation scheme and offering free promotional material such as window stickers, and a website listing.

The success of the scheme in just 2 years has meant that pubs from Jersey to Inverness have now signed up to the scheme, with CAMRA discovering more pubs than ever are going out of their way to stock real cider and perry in light of a wider consumer resurgence for these products.

Announcing the 1000th pub to sign up to the scheme is the Three Elms, Chignal St James, Chelmsford, Essex (CM1 4TZ), Gillian Williams, CAMRA cider and perry committee member and administrator of the scheme, said:

'When we started this scheme some people said we'd struggle to get 250 pubs signed up, so it's simply amazing to have over 1,000 pubs involved. We know from CAMRA's many beer and cider festivals that consumer demand is out there for real cider and perry, therefore it's fantastic to see such a wide geographic spread of pubs involved with this exciting initiative.'

Split by region, CAMRA has today published the numbers of accredited real cider pubs now present across the UK. A full list of accredited pubs can be viewed by visiting www.camra.org.uk/cidermonth -

Williams concluded:

'It's also exciting to see the number of producers of real cider and perry across Britain having swelled over the past 10 years, with the sheer variety and choice present bringing local flavours to life. During this month of campaigning in October, we hope as many consumers - both first time drinkers and regulars - as possible find the time to visit one of these thousand-plus pubs across the country and try a drop of the real stuff.'

Notes to Editors:

National Cider and Perry Month takes place in October each year to celebrate the production, history and skill associated with real cider and perry production. For more information on the Month, or to find an event near you, please visit www.camra.org.uk/cidermonth
  • Real cider is a long-established traditional drink which is produced naturally from apples and is neither carbonated nor pasteurised. As cider is made from apples, perry is made from pears.
  • As the fruit ripens throughout September and October, it is milled and pressed. The juice is then left to ferment and mature until early spring when it is ready to drink.
  • Pubs who sell a real cider or perry 12 months of the year can complete a webform to apply to join the scheme at www.camra.org.uk/ciderpubsignup
