An Apple A Day

an Autumn potpourri

My boys don’t always get around to eating an entire apple, and somedays I will find a few half-eaten Fuji’s resting around my kitchen counters.

The perfect solution (besides trying to track down the offending party and telling him to finish this apple!) is to cut up the remaining, oft dried-out fruit and throw into a saucepan of water. Add to that a few sticks of cinnamon and you have the perfect... READ MORE

Small Bytes

a cookbook of epic proportions

The world’s shortest recipe cookbook is now available and it looks brilliant.

From the twitter account of the same concept comes recipes that are 140 characters or less, delicious offerings like:

Overnight oats: Stir 3T dried berries, 10 crumbled walnut halves, 1C non-instant rolled oats, 1C milk, 6oz yogurt & let sit overnight.

and

Beer bread: Mix 3c flour, 3t powder, 1½t salt, 3T sugar. Stir in... READ MORE

Coffee Break

I think I need one

SO I’M WRITING TO UPDATE YOU ALL, woah, ahem. I’m writing to update you on my coffee endeavors. They have been AWESOME. And then, a little too awesome.

For starters, it turns out my system is very (very! very! very!) sensitive to caffeine. I knew that, but had forgotten. I love caffeine, but have to take it in moderate amounts. Otherwise, the universe is no match for my brilliance.

So that was my... READ MORE

Iced Coffee

Just chill

In search of the perfect iced coffee recipe recently, I came across this delicious concoction—courtesy of the Pioneer Woman.

Do you have a no-fail method for making iced coffee? Please share it with us! This time of year has me wanting all my liquids with ice, ice and a bit more ice!

Perfect Iced Coffee, from The Pioneer Woman
Ingredients
1 pound Ground Coffee (good, Rich Roast)

Caramelized Onions

an important summer skill

Yesterday I was craving home-grilled hamburgers with homegrown tomatoes and caramelized onions. The problem was I have never really mastered the task of actually caramelizing anything. Usually when I try working with onions, they wind up sauteed. Not quite the same thing.

I leafed through one of my Barefoot Contessa cookbooks and she had a recipe for fancy grilled burgers with caramelized onions.... READ MORE

So Cool

Frozen yogurt is back

Is it just me or was frozen yogurt a thing of the 90s? I remember finding out (with delight) that you could eat this stuff that was almost as delicious as ice cream but way better for you.

I was excited to learn recently that we have a frozen yogurt shoppe in our fair city. My sister discovered (with delight) that a cute little place called Tutti Frutti has opened. It features soft-serve frozen yogurt... READ MORE

Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Celebremos!

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Are you celebrating?

As someone who is married to a Mexican citizen (my husband’s mother was born and raised in Mexico City), I can attest to the fact that almost no one in Mexico actually celebrates this day. But we gringos? We love it!

We drove by a Mexican restaurant tonight to find the parking lot packed full, with cars lining up along the road leading to the restaurant. It... READ MORE

Craving Cookies?

Imitate the Girl Scouts - make your own!

As previous discussions on this site have proven, Girl Scout cookies are a controversial issue.

But I think there are a couple things we can all agree on: Girl Scout cookies, however delicious, are pretty expensive on a per-cookie basis. They’re also not available year-round.

A couple years ago, poking around food blogs on the Internet (as you do) I discovered a wonderful solution to this problem:... READ MORE

Warm Up With Pumpkin Soup

(and three other delicious pumpkin recipes!)

Over the weekend, I was inspired by the simple recipe for Pumpkin Soup Kristen Laurence shared.

My one word review? Yum. It was perfect with grilled cheese sandwiches and it tastes exactly like a fall soup should. I am patting myself on the back for having discovered such a delicious way to get some calcium, vitamin A, and beta carotene into my kids.

I am a big fan of pumpkin flavors in the fall,... READ MORE
