I don’t know if it ever went out…but it is definitely in now. And I LOVE the pay by weight thing…so great when you have little kids. Most servings are too big for them. And me too. Sometimes all you want is a little guilt free glob of chocolatey yogurt with peanut butter cups on top…right? Or am i the only one who can’t pass up chocolate and peanut butter.
So Cool

Is it just me or was frozen yogurt a thing of the 90s? I remember finding out (with delight) that you could eat this stuff that was almost as delicious as ice cream but way better for you.
I was excited to learn recently that we have a frozen yogurt shoppe in our fair city. My sister discovered (with delight) that a cute little place called Tutti Frutti has opened. It features soft-serve frozen yogurt in a variety of flavors and a bar of toppings that range from syrups and fruit to candy and cereal. You load up on want you want and then pay per ounce. Brilliant!
We enjoyed our Mother’s Day trip to the yogurt shoppe and I’m looking forward to going back sometime soon. I’m wondering if frozen yogurt is becoming en vogue again?
Or maybe it never even went out of style.

I didn’t notice peanut butter cups—but totally would have gotten some if I had. Instead I scooped up some chopped Andes mints with a chocolate/vanilla swirl. So good.
And you are right—the pay by weight is indeed perfect with kids. Henry got just the right amount for him.
We love the local frozen yogurt shop as well (my 10 year old seems to think that he’s really cool calling it fro yo), but the self serve aspect is a little tricky here. The boys love doing it themselves but end up with WAY TOO MUCH. On our last trip, I wanted an organized flavor experience (pineapple yogurt with strawberry and kiwi chunks) so I got my own, but my sweet husband just tried to bat cleanup so he got candy covered chocolate strawberry gmish gmosh - and even without him selecting his own dessert, our family of 5 cost $18 limiting our ability to enjoy this treat! I’m hoping that the boys will do better at self regulating but it’s soooooo hard when it’s all sitting there for the taking!
I see this as a good metaphor for life and so far internal self control is not exhibiting itself. However, my husband prefers to have dessert when it’s just about sweets and not my doomsday predictions for the future spiritual life of our children!
Real, tangy frozen yogurt (vs. my childhood favorite, TCBY) has been a trend in DC and NY for a couple of years, so I guess it’s making its way into smaller cities and towns now. I used to live in Georgetown, where there were three frozen yogurt shops with all kinds of yummy toppings. I’ve been craving fro-yo now that the weather is getting so warm! The new latest thing in NY is gourmet donuts (e.g hyacinth-infused frosting; tres leches; pistachio), so I’m excited for that to arrive in Philly…maybe in time for the fall?
How funny! I had fro yo for Mother’s Day too! A new place opened by our favorite restaurant called Frogurt (frog theme). It too has a serve-yourself concept. I tried dulce de leche, French vanilla, and triple chocolate (just a bit of each) with chocolate chunks and hot fudge sauce plus hot caramel sauce (I was living it up a bit!) A nice bonus—moms were charged 1/2 price. I’ve tried Red Mango, but it’s just too sour for me. The Frogurt was the nice sweet 90’s-style yogurt that I prefer. So I guess gourmet donuts are the next Big Thing? It will be a while before it hits rural North Carolina!
I think, as another person mentioned, that real, tangy frozen yogurt is coming back into vogue. I love TCBY but it doesn’t make my mouth water like PINKBERRY. We were thrilled when one came to town just 8 blocks from our house in New Orleans. Two more have popped up since then. If you ever have the chance, give it a try. My favorite is pomegranate with honey-roasted sunflower seeds and pumpkin granola on top. Heaven in a cup!
