K-1000 rally to be flagged off today

BANGALORE: The 33rd edition of the K-1000 rally, sponsored this year by Bosch, will be flagged off at 8 a.m. from the California Resort, near Yelahanka, on Friday.

A record number of 48 entries reported for scrutiny and the highlight this year would be the N+ class which has three Cedia 2000s in the fray. Team MRF has two Cedias and the Red Rooster Racing team the third.

This year the rally will be conducted at Siddalghata near Kolar. The 400 km rally will have 280 kilometres in the transport section and 106 kms in the special stages on dirt tracks in various mulberry farms for which Siddalghata is famous.

The special stages will have about 26 kilometres of dirt roads which will be repeated four times.

The rally will be co-sponsored by Mitsubishi Motors, Red Rooster Racing, Overdrive, Bisleri and Radio Indigo.

Team MRF’s Gaurav Gill (co-driver Moosa Sharief) is participating after having driven at the APRC at Malaysia last week. Naren Kumar, who bagged the runner-up spot at the APRC event in Malaysia, will not be competing here but would be present at Siddalghata during the rally.

The regular competitors in the Rally Star Cup and the two cars steered by the ladies’ teams will be part of the action.

Dull start to season

It was an uninspiring start to the new Bangalore District Football league season. Defending champion Madras Engineering Group (MEG) drew a blank against mediocre LRDE for a goalless draw, in the Super Division championship for the George Hoover Cup at the football stadium here on Thursday.

Only the format seems to be restructured. The same teams dished out same fare — listless, to say the least. If this is what one can expect in an enlarged league format, with 15 teams in fray now, the crowds, will remain distant.

Only towards the end MEG did show some urgency and did earn a few corners but could do very little to breach the rival defence. qSubstitute Edwin George failed to direct his header off a Satish (Jr) cross from right for LRDE while Nguerilal’s lone shot at goal for MEG was collected on the second attempt by custodian Anthony.
