Battlefield 3 - Pre-launch Discussion

Release Date: Autumn 2011

I can see this being a much-hyped game in the coming months, especially for PC gamers. The promise of 32 vs 32 online multi-player is mouthwatering, but as a console gamer, the thought of more Battlefield is tasty enough!

First details here:
Quote:
PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 shooter Battlefield 3 features improved visuals and what developer DICE describes as an "exponential leap" in destructibility.

Game engine Frostbite 2 has made Battlefield 3's existence possible, according to US magazine Game Informer.

Other details revealed this morning: 64-player multiplayer on PC returns, jets make it in and you'll have the ability to go prone.
And a bit of a teaser trailer available here.

So what does everyone else make of this? Will the ability to go prone ruin the game? Are you disappointed there's no massive multiplayer on consoles? Will it be the first game for years to finally beat Call of Duty off the top? Discuss.

I think that the series is going to become the next CoD. What I mean is, EA are going to milk it.

64 players is awesome, but i just don't know whether i've got the patience to go through what i had to go through to get Battlefield 2 working all those years ago all over again. To say that the game was unplayable for the first few weeks is an understatement. I think it was about 5 patches before it worked correctly on my PC (which at the time, was more than capable of running it).

It'll probably be a console purchase for me.

This looks absolutely amazing, I just hope the end product lives up to expectation. I wont be buying COD this year unless something radical changes in it as it's got so stale (probably won't though, just new perks & killstreaks ) so I'm looking at this being the ideal replacement.

I loved Bad Company 2, so if plays anything like that, it's a must buy for me

I've been looking foward to this for ages, so much so it's making me consider getting a new PC to play it.

No doubt I'll pick it up on the PS3 - but I'm concerned a little how the maps will play out with only half the number of maximum players (32 v 32 on PC, 12 v 12 on console)?

Not fussed about prone being included; although I may change opinion about that come the time to play!

The screen shots I've seen look very much like MoH, I'm hoping that it don't play like it and the classes are more like BFBC2 rather than MoH.

This game desperately needs a boot camp or training mode for MP. And it needs bigger squad options on the larger team objective games, imo, 4 ain't enough!!

I also hope they don't dumb it down, much as I like the Vietnam expansion pack, I find that far easier to play than the vanilla BFBC2. Hopefully, that's just me?

There huge lobbying on the official forums for the console versions to have a server browser, something I'd love to see myself.

The PC version is supposed to have "enhanced" graphics over the console versions; and if you pre-order the PC version from EA you get a free expansion pack (contains maps from BF2).

I'm waiting for the beta - but I have high expectations for this game.

God damn Frostbite 3 is looking good. Can't wait to get back to Karkand!

If one person calls it Karkland or Kirkland I'll kill myself.

Oh and can we stop comparing it to Bad Company 2? They are NOT the same, they aren't supposed to be.

Yeah, the people expecting it to be BFBC3 are going to be in for a (hopefully pleasant) shock. The core BF games are much deeper/bigger than the BC spin offs.

BF2 wasn't even frostbite 1, it was the refractor 2 engine.
There's been no BF game that's used frostbite 2 yet.

Will need at least a mediocre PC, as there's no support for directx 9 and windows xp. Bet the game will be a bit/very laggy on the average PC.

BF2 had hellish system requirements at release, so I assume BF3 will be crysis-esque at least.

I loved BF2 and don't get on with BFBC2 so this is a god send for me. I think it will be more like BF2 but with the best elements of BFBC2 added. I really hope they add replay ability for online matches al-la Reach/Blops.

Does anyone like the replay feature on games like these?

Roll on Battlefield 3!

Interesting read:
Quote:
Battlefield 3, unusually for a contemporary big-budget shooter, its lead platform is the PC rather than a console.

Will feature the maximalist combined arms battles that made the series popular across single-player, co-operative and multiplayer modes. It will reintroduce several elements absent from the Bad Company games, including fighter jets, the prone position and 64-player battles on PC, while the consoles will support 24 players.

A new animation system will allow players to "drag fallen comrades into safety and mount weapons on almost any part of the terrain.

In the March 2011 issue of Game Informer magazine, they describe how an RPG can hit a building and cause ripple splash damage. The updated Frostbite 2 engine can realistically show how a seven story building would collapse during an earthquake in a pile of smoke and debris.

Maps set in Paris, Tehran, Sulaymaniyah and New York have been confirmed. As a whole the game will cover urban streets, metropolitan downtown areas, and open landscapes suited to vehicle combat. The single player campaign takes place in the year 2014.
Games like this is what makes PC gaming the king over console games.

Great game play footage. As a console owner, I hope this game is just as good as it will be on PC, but having 40-fewer players per match online is going to be noticeable.

Also, here's a lengthy written preview of the game on Eurogamer.

Aparently this is coming, a number of gaming magazines had the chance to play the MP last night, behind closed doors (so I believe).

Expect some form of review in the coming weeks.

I keep hearing/reading rumours of the beta starting in July.

Agreed, looks pretty amazing, the lighting looked brilliant. Is anyone else tiring of Middle East set military games though? They're starting to become oversaturated like WWII games were a few years ago.

I wonder if the Beta will be open to all or if it will still be restricted to those who bought the Limited Edition of Medal of Honor. I'd like to test this out on my PC.

Problem is most of the current unrest is in the Middle East - so it's topical!

As for the beta - not sure; I got MoH for the beta for BF3, I'm guessing (and this is my guess) that there will be an opportunity to get beta codes for a closed beta on PC for a limited time. Surely they'll open the beta to stress test the servers?
