Australia halts cattle supply to Indonesia abattoirs

Australia acts on Indonesia abattoir scandal AFP/File – Cattle are lead by their handlers during an agricultural event in Sydney. Australia on Tuesday suspended …

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia has moved to halt the supply of live cattle to three Indonesian abattoirs after a documentary Monday revealed evidence of cruelty against animals shipped there for slaughter.

The ABC's "Four Corners" programme -- to be aired later Monday -- said it had footage of cattle suffering, including having their eyes gouged, tails broken and throats hacked in four slaughterhouses in Indonesia.

After viewing the footage, the Australian livestock export industry body LiveCorp said it had asked the Indonesian industry to stop supplying Australian cattle to three of these facilities.

"Cruelty to Australian animals is simply unacceptable," LiveCorp chief executive Cameron Hall said in a statement.

"This graphic and distressing footage has upset and frustrated the industry, particularly given our major efforts to improve animal welfare in Indonesia."

LiveCorp said it would provide additional training to workers at the fourth abattoir to improve conditions.

"Our animal welfare strategy is focused on ensuring our cattle are only supplied to facilities where supply chains meet or exceed global animal welfare standards," Hall said.

The head of animal welfare at Indonesia's agriculture ministry, Sri Mukartini, said she had heard about the Australian documentary but would not comment on specific incidents.

"Animal welfare is a relatively new issue in Indonesia. We're still developing regulations," she told AFP.

"This is different to what happens in developed countries like Australia, which see it as an important issue because their people have better awareness of animal welfare."

Australian live cattle exports were valued at Aus$652 million (US$697 million) in 2008-09, with Indonesia the single largest market. The industry underpins the employment of some 10,000 workers in regional Australia.

Canberra funds a number of projects aimed at improving infrastructure and training to promote better animal handling and slaughter practices.

The terrible mistreatment of animals all over the world is caused by callous disregard for life, greed, and the worst in human nature. From captured wild animals kept imprisoned on small chains, to pigs kept in contained areas with no room to move whatsoever, to cutting off the fins of sharks and throwing them live back into the ocean to die slowly, to the millions of dogs and cats that live unwanted on the streets of poor countries in the worst condition, malnourished, diseased,to the huge industrial factory farms, to the slaughter of marine mammals and endangered species, to the deforestation that is bringing all kinds of species to the brink of exrtinction, to the massive dog fighting in the United states, and on and on. And all along this miserable litany of cruelty, there are so called animal welfare against cruelty type organnizations, profiting from this suffering by exploiting animals to raise money for themselves, all the while offering nothing in the way of effective programs, and much in the way of hype and self promotional nonsense. Animals have no terue defenders, or very few at best. their exploiters are many.

Why is LiveCorp Cattle Company sending live cattle hundreds of miles north....across the sea, to be slaughtered in Indonesia anyway?....most likely to avoid:

    -minimum wage/labor laws
    -to avoid animal cruelty laws
-to avoid paying taxes in their home country
    -to avoid environmental laws

These are the only reasons I can think of....cutting corners at the expense and suffering of living things.

It's likely that these cattle are sent to Indonesia on ships...I wonder what the living conditions are on these ships for these animals?

LiveCorp would be better off just slaughtering these animals locally in Australia....under Australian law......think of what's ethical and humane, not cheap.

Buy meat from the United states. You can rest assured that the pork, beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, duck on your plate came from one of the large, incredibly crowded, high efficiency factory farms where animals are kept in filthy, inhumane conditions, deprived of the most basic need to move. Animal cruelty is widespread and growing, thanks in part to the numerous so called anti cruelty animal welfare organizations that have done nothing but exploit and manipulate animal cruelty to make fortunes for themselves, while doing nothing to better the welfare of animals in the states or anywhere else.

To Lyn White, Four Corners, Animals Australia and Andrew Wilkie, thankyou for having the balls to bring this important topic to our attention and to push for change in an area which so desperately needs it. And to some of the ignorant morons that post comments essentially condoning such cruelty, idiots like Bob Katter which make us ashamed to be Australian and greedy, pathetic weak little men like Cameron Hall (CEO of Livecorp), shame on you all. I can but hope that karma bites you squarely in the arse and you come back as a cow to be slaughtered at one of these barbaric abattoirs, without the humane use of any stun gun. In fact, don't be surprised if you and your loved ones end up receiving equally cruel and barbaric death threats yourself...couldn't be more deserving. I'm just angry enough to wield the blunt knife myself...

All sentient creatures have feelings and emotions, including those who are helpless because of our power over them. It's no different to sending your own much-loved pet to where there is no care for them.

Australia clearly hasn't bothered to research what they are doing, they're just looking at the dollar signs. We must not be so clouded by money. We can live on a lot less than we think.

Put an embargo on countries who even, as above, declare they don't consider animal welfare. No living creatures should be sent there, that's for sure!

Actually, live animal export should not be happening at all. It's inherently cruel.

Nicki, I agree about the US but it's not because of the animal welfare groups. The animal welfare groups have simply let us know that those conditions exist and we need to stop buying animal products that are not proven free range (ie authority-labelled), to show our distaste for such cruelty.

Search the internet...watch the youtubes, go to an Australian wildlife protection site and read about a dude who use to be a roo shooter "A Letter from an Ex- Kangaroo Shooter". And the conclusion leads you to think that Australians should just shut their traps about animals.
