PARIS (AFP) – An ancient sea predator with a spined head and plated mouth grew to a much greater size and lived far longer than thought, according to a study Wednesday shedding light on one of the Earth's most intriguing evolutionary periods.

Scientists, in a paper published by the journal Nature, describe the splendid fossil of an animal called an anomalocaridid.

Anomalocaridids are thought to have been kings of the planet during the "Cambrian Explosion," some 540 to 500 million years ago, when biodiversity dramatically increased.

Until now, fossils of anomalocaridids have been in the range of 60 centimetres (two feet) or so in length.

But the new find, located in a treasure trove of fossils in Morocco, is a relative monster, as it measures a metre (3.25 feet) long.

Just as surprising, says the paper, is the discovery that this particular beast lived not in the Cambrian but in the Ordovician period which followed and which was also a time of species explosion.

It shows that these animals were a massive success, for they lived for 30 million years longer than previously realised.

"The anomalocaridids are one of the most iconic groups of Cambrian animals," said Derek Briggs, director of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, Connecticut.

"These giant invertebrate predators and scavengers have come to symbolize the unfamiliar morphologies displayed by organisms that branched off early from lineages leading to modern marine animals, and then went extinct.

"Now we know that they died out much more recently than we thought."

CUT - Take a break and have a(n) haircut!!! - just came in my mail..
    "The Haircut ...

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut.

After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME
    REASON!

    @ Real Truth & Scott

You guys were talking about the idea that non-belief is faith. A while back, I and the other Evo regulars here compiled this list:

To say atheism is a belief, is like saying ...

    Starvation is a dietary supplement.
Water is a flavor of soup.
    Baldness is a hair color.
    Blindness is an optical illusion.
Virginity is a method of reproduction.
    Silence is a musical instrument.
    Paralysis is a dance.
Homelessness is a type of real estate.
Ignorance is a field of expertise.
Unconsciousness is a train of thought.
    Death is an alternative lifestyle.
Shadow is a form of light.
Cold is a form of energy.
    Off is a TV channel.
Not collecting stamps is a hobby.
Barefoot is a kind of shoe.
    Taxidermy is veterinary care.
Counting to zero is a mathematical exercise.
Being penniless is an accounting problem.
    Naked is an outfit.
Missing the boat is a sea voyage.
Heartlessness is a way to show you care.

Additions and refinements are very welcome!

    From Grayman:
"Louis – I don’t have expertise in this field, but it sounds like humanity is getting closer to fusion by the second. I assume that this is what you’ve been talking about the last few months when you speak about events in 2015ish (in response to 5/21/11). It would be cool to be involved with the next major step in mankind’s energy evolution. Now solve that pesky unified field conundrum.."

Well i never thought you will reply on my comment Grayman -- you see Mr. Gray is also one of my favorite scientist on free energy devices -- thanks for passing by anyway.. bout that unified field -- well its a missing link -- just like the "stargate" wormhole puzzle -- and weve been back again to Mach principle and Newtonian Luchak's - ADM brain twister -- then everything went back to simple algebra solution - i cant believe my eyes... what im talking to you on this thread for months already were simply just history... im looking forward to "stargates" -- mmmm cousin ZZZ would love this... just having some fun Grayman.. have a nice day.. youre really paying attention sir..

Can any of you Christians fundies guess why this is?
You are the direct cause of this, whether you want to believe it or not.

These very poorly structured sentences are an excerpt from one of Sherlock's posts from yesterday that was pertaining to what the definition of what a 'fact' is....

"The real truth doesn't like the real truth at least his cohorts don't. now the point was that all those were accepted as facts at one time and now have been dis proven so why would any one listen to the garbage you spout as fact now. "

I'm very curious to know if the rest of the religious people on the board agree with this. It's actually very important.

Believing something to be fact, and something that actually is a fact are two completely different things.
In other words, just because we might believe it to be fact, doesn't mean it actually makes it a fact.
Is this an example of someone clearly shown to be wrong and not accepting it and making excuses?

Would you agree, based on what was written here, that something like the belief in God was once accepted to be fact, but now is clearly shown not to be?
And if so,why would we listen to the garbage you spout as a fact,if it's clearly shown not to be?

Again, facts don't change and never will,as I so clearly pointed out,so why would you backtrack like this and make excuses instead of simply admitting you were wrong?

BA states, "...no but the animals that evolve, they are all already put together at every level this spells disaster when trying to disprove creation."

You obviously never took a logic class, neither did the nine idiots who gave you thumbs up for saying something so stupid. Disproving one theory (not that you did that), does not prove another.
What you demonstrated was that you lack the most basic understanding of the Theory of Evolution (TOE).

TOE does not say that animals are put together by evolution, it says that certain genetic traits are favored because of selection by natural causes. Those traits in general, are those that cause the DNA of the animals possessing said traits to pass them to their descendants through sexual or natural selection.

It is not hard to imagine a giraffe with a slightly longer neck having an advantage over others in getting food. We have evidence in the fossil record of giraffes getting progressively longer necks. It is funny that the most direct route for the "recurrent laryngeal nerve" is not what is used. It is referred to as "recurrent" because the branches of the nerve innervate the larnyngeal muscles through a rather circuitous route: it descends into the thorax before rising up between the reach the neck. Would a designer do such a thing? Perhaps if he was drunk or on acid. Would evolution do this, of course, because evolution has to work with what already exists. When the neck was shorter in the giraffe this was a fairly short distance. Millions of years later, as the neck evolved progressively longer, the nerve followed the same route as it always had, and grew progressively longer. Again, you can say what you want about animals being complete, but there is evidence in the fossil record for giraffes evolving a longer neck, and it should also be noted that giraffes with long necks don't appear in the fossil record before giraffes with short necks, thus it is evidence for evolution and evidence against biblical creation.
