Why is he a key player?:
For the duration of his career, Cobi Jones has had to live up to impossible expectations. The United States has forever been in search of a superstar player to lead the country to the next level of international football, and when Jones was at the initial stage of his soccer journey, many pointed to him. But for the most part, the rapid Jones has been noted more for his hairstyles than for his play on the pitch.
Nonetheless, Jones does represent an important cog in the American soccer machine. His experience and veteran leadership will be counted on as a soothing presence for the younger members of the squad unaccustomed to the glare of the World Cup spotlight. Jones has an impressive resume to his credit, despite a lack of scoring in the crunch. He was the youngest player in the world to appear in 100 international games and was a presence on the field for all of his teams' games in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.
Still, most football critics would cite weak American squads as the reason behind the milestones achieved by Jones over the years. Therefore, in order to win over the cynics and lead the United States to a respectable showing, Cobi Jones will have to summon the best of his skills in Japan and South Korea.
