The word '”heist” is a dialectical variant of “hoist.” You didn't know that, did ya? Committing a heist is by definition no different than committing a theft or robbery. But only a certain type of theft can fairly be called a heist, and the key is an element of sensationalism -- most commonly a component of dizzying audacity or dazzling stupidity.
