toe tragedy

In the Embarrassing Sports Injuries article, I would've loved to have read the whole story behind "Out of Service" Pervis Ellison's toe injury when he was with the Boston Celtics. Rumor around town was that he dropped a couch on his big toe while helping a friend move during the season. Hey Pervis, how about tossing your friend $500 to hire a moving company so that you can continue to earn your million-dollar salary?

Johnson

Hi Johnson,

Jerry Seinfeld once described helping a friend move as the biggest step in a male relationship -- like going all the way.

Pervis Ellison didn't go all the way, but he was chilling in the new home of Celtics teammate Greg Minor after the movers had finished bringing in furniture. They set a marble tabletop on its base, but it slipped off and landed on Ellison's big toe. His toe was fractured, effectively ending his season.

After leading Louisville to the 1986 NCAA Championship and garnering MVP respects in the Final, "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison surfaced as a prime NBA prospect. But after the Sacramento Kings selected him first overall, his career was mired in a slew of injuries that limited him annually, earning him the tag "Out of Service" Pervis.

the top 49

I would just like to comment on the list of Top 49 men. I find it disturbing that the top 10 (except for Bill Clinton) have done virtually nothing in the field of philanthropy or humanitarian good deeds.

It seems to me that a real man's measure should be assessed by his intelligence and intellect, his actions (global consciousness), generosity of spirit, respect of others, and motivation to be a better person and to make this world a better place. He is most certainly not a perfect man, but a man wishing only to perfect himself.

Bill Clinton and Bono should be way up there on the list. The chefs, athletes and actors who have been listed ahead of these two men should be placed lower according to the criteria listed above.

[Editor's note: We left it to AskMen.com readers to determine the criteria for the Top 49 list, and they certainly seem to have taken philanthropy into account -- a close look at the list will reveal as much. Setting it as the sole governing factor, however, would have betrayed the spirit of the list, and most would agree that generosity alone is not the true measure of a man.]

Re: the letter from Jay Leno
If you watch his program and see the segment on “Jay Walking” you would know that Jay Leno tries to prove a point in a subtle way when he asks folks on the street questions re: America. Teachers do not even know the answers to the simplest questions on geography or history. Showing pictures to them of very important people, except Brittany Spears or some rapper they are right on the money. When shown a photo of Ben Franklin they give the stupidest answers of whom they are viewing.
Ask a foreigner a question re: American history, eight times out of ten they give the correct answer! What does that tell you about where we are headed and in whose hands our great nation leys. Jay Leno is waiting for the more intelligent folks to catch on. Jokes that he tells, most people in his audience do not get because they do not follow the news!
If you look carefully at his eyes and facial expressions you will see the disgust but all who view his program do not have a clue about the point he is trying to make.
In our day we were taught reading, writing, and arithmetic the hard way, using our brain and not a machine. We even had paper and pencils! Each week it was a must to bring in “Current Events”. An article from the newspaper to be read and explained in front of the class. We learned history of all nations and geography. Memorial Day was not just a day off, it actually meant something as well as the 4th of July and was celebrated with pride.
We hung “Old Glory” out side of our homes to show how much we love this country.
Neighbor helped neighbor and we even held “block parties” and knew our neighbors.
Regarding the homeless: do we know who they are or who they “were” before all this happened to them? We might be very surprised I am sure. What is their story?
I agree with Jay, and we should all be ashamed of ourselves for letting this happened and get out of hand. Doubt if it will ever be the same again. Is it too late to restore the morals,
manners, and family values back into our society? This and more, too numerous to even begin to mention about our beautiful America have hard lessons to be learned regarding our future. “God will need to Bless America” more than ever in these times.

Wow, nv - You mean to tell us that the readers of a men's interest website, when voting on their "favorite men", didn't consider physical appearance the one and only factor? You're right to be so shocked; what a scandal!

In a futile attempt to google in "American Sophistication" and coming up nearly empty on the web, I somehow stumbled on your site. The tips and guides on keeping my lifestyle in gear have been invaluable. Whether learning of the delights of single malt Scotch or choosing a suit, shoes or ties, you seem to have each topic nailed. It's like the Playboy advisor only without the pictures. It's great that your 're geared toward men as we have a fraction of the resources women do to find this info, and this site covers many of the things of interest to me, a real man. Keep up the good work!
