FAQs

HFHNI Frequently asked questions

How is the organisation funded?

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland has developed a diverse fundraising programme drawing support from a wide range of sources including individuals, churches, corporates, foundations and statutory bodies.

How does HFHNI address affordability?

HFHNI is committed to delivering affordable housing solutions. Increasing numbers of people find that high prices and low incomes effectively exclude them from the opportunity to own their own homes. HFHNI provides a 'hand-up' for low-income households by providing a Habitat partnership grant of up to 10%, enabling family partners to access homeownership through an equity sharing partnership.

What are the houses like?

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland uses innovative designs which address affordability and fuel poverty to build and renovate houses. All new houses are approved by the National House Building Council. They are timber framed with a brick exterior and have 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms. Timber frames provide considerable savings on heating costs compared to traditional brick and block construction.

How are Habitat homeowners selected?

Habitat selects families all over the world based on the same three criteria:

1 Need for adequate housing

2 Ability to make repayments

3 Willingness to partner with Habitat (through the self-build programme)

In the HFHNI partnership programme, selected homeowners are required to complete a specified number of hours on-site, working with volunteers, under the guidance of HFHNI construction staff.

How can I volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer with HFHNI, volunteers do not need construction experience before they come on site. Under the guidance of HFHNI's construction staff, volunteers work on all aspects of the building process, except specialist trades such as bricklaying, electrical and plumbing work. You can volunteer for one day or on a regular basis. There are several other ways you can get involved:

  • In the office
  • In the joinery workshop
  • Throughout Northern Ireland as a speaker or fundraiser
  • In your church as a link person
