Disaster reconstruction

After natural disasters and conflicts, Habitat for Humanity is there to pick up the pieces and help renew communities.

When the attention of the world has shifted elsewhere, we'll still be there picking up the pieces

When disaster strikes communities are thrown into trauma and it's vital to get immediate aid to the victims. Whether it's a cyclone, an earthquake or a war, the world's aid agencies are quick to respond.

But what happens when the debris is cleared and the TV cameras have moved on? This is the time that determines if the survivors will live in poverty for years to come or will be able to rebuild their lives. Typically they have now lost everything ... their home, their belongings, their livelihood and even their family and friends. They are now living in makeshift shelters dependent on aid just to survive.

Habitat for Humanity is one of the few international charities entirely dedicated to long-term reconstruction and regeneration. We are committed to helping people rebuild their shattered communities. We are still helping the people of South East Asia in the wake of the Asian Tsunami three and a half years later. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our supporters and partners, we have been able to reconstruct more homes in the region than any other Non Government Organisation.

We're there for the long haul

Working through our own organisations on the ground, we work with local people, provide technical expertise and the resources to repair and rebuild homes.

Because we use local materials and simple, practical technology, our work helps to regenerate small local industries. We also provide technical assistance and training to other agencies and their partners, all of which contributes to long-term recovery.

We're guided by clear principles:

We see the job through. We are a specialist long term reconstruction and regeneration agency, providing permanent housing solutions.

We build back better. Future disaster mitigation is a clear priority. Typically, homes are built to better withstand future disasters.

We provide local solutions to local problems. We don't come in with preconceived notions. We start each project with fresh eyes by rigorously assessing the situation, enabling local people to drive the key decisions and responding to the real requirements of the
community.
