Building Community

There has been significant political progress in Northern Ireland which has resulted in social and economic benefits for our communities. The legacy of 35 years of conflict and violence has, however, left Northern Ireland a divided and segregated society. Over 92.5% of our public housing sector is segregated along sectarian lines and only 5% of our schools are formally integrated.

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland is committed to building sustainable communities through practical self-help, volunteerism and skills and leadership development.

Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland's work clearly aligns with the government's Programme of Cohesion, Sharing and Integration for a shared and better future.

Community self-build housing projects are locally rooted. They develop capacity and networks of mutual support and learning, which impact individuals and communities with the aim of building sustainable peace.

At a local level we engage key partners. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the local community, other voluntary organisations and business partners work together to deliver a unique grassroots programme.

Every project engages local residents, business leaders, civic institutions, churches and organisations. Together they inform the community development process and the Family, Volunteer and House Building programmes.

Volunteer Programmes are designed to develop the capacity of individuals and groups who partner with us. We build community by bringing people together through focused projects with intentional learning outcomes. We support individuals and groups in sharing their personal stories, exploring the legacy of conflict and empowering them to make steps towards a shared future.

"While on site, we were talking about the differences between our two communities...and what I discovered was not how different we are but how much we have in common."
