History of the University

American World University, a global institution of higher learning, was founded in the Fall of 1990, in response to the need for quality distance learning at the college level. The founder and president of AWU is Dr. Maxine Asher. Dr. Asher served on the staff of eight California universities and holds advanced degrees from UCLA, California State University Northridge and Walden University. Dr. Asher studied extensively in Europe, learning European approaches to higher education. In 1972, she earned her first doctorate from the University of Granada (Spain) in the field of Linguistics and later a second doctorate was earned in Education at Walden University with a concentration in Anthropology. The expertise gained from an understanding of both the American and the European systems of education has helped American World become the foremost model of the true global university. Students can study for higher degrees in their own countries, in their own languages, and according to their own cultural customs. Working closely with Dr. Asher and her staff, are five professionally well-known educators with a wealth of multiethnic experience as well as expertise in higher education. The five A.W.U. board members are experts in their respective fields, have traveled abroad extensively, and speak at least one other language in addition to English.
