7. Desert Crisis

Desert Crisis’ name and background story doesn’t make much sense, but who cares?
Desert Crisis, which just recently released a new version 1.5 update, is a sorta nutty mod set in the near future. As such, there’s an odd mix of standard weapons you’ll see in every other mod like MP5’s next to futuristic weapons like plasma cannons. DC also has some very unique features like removable limbs, modular objectives, and an extensive, almost RPG-like character creation system.

The team describes their mod as a "pulse-pounding over-the-top war simulation. The focus is on having a great time, and using some of the coolest weapons to do it." As long as you don’t take it too seriously, Desert Crisis definitely meets its goals.

    6. Tour of Duty

Tour of Duty won't blow you away graphically, but it's still worthwhile.
Tour of Duty is another class-based mod that features U.S. Marines fighting the North Vietnamese Army in late 60’s Vietnam.

ToD has been compared to Day of Defeat, but even though they’re both "realistic" war mods, there aren’t really as many similarities as you’d expect. ToD has more gameplay modes than DoD, offering up standards like Ccpture the flag and team deathmatch to go along with control point, escape and evasion, bombing, rescue, and assassination missions. And there’s a LAW rocket launcher.

Due to having only two releases under their belt, Tour of Duty is still a little rough around the edges. But like all of these mods, it’s sure to improve with time.

    5. Pirates, Vikings, and Knights

As you could probably guess, PVK isn’t exactly a realism mod.
YARRRR!!! Shiver your timbers and whatnot, Pirates, Vikings, and Knights is a bizarre mod that makes ... well ... Pirates, Vikings and Knights fight each other for really no good reason.

It’s pretty much impossible to describe PVK in a couple paragraphs. After all, not too many other mods have classes like "Berserker Viking" and use parrots as weapons. If you’re interested in getting into PVK, I’d recommend checking out this useful guide. PVK is certainly unique and often hilariously fun.
