Historia
|
FEGL (Gay and
Lesbian State
Federation), was established in 1992, as an input of
COGAM (Gay Collective of
Madrid
), after COGAMs exit from the historical COFLHEE (Coordination of
Liberation Fronts of Spanish Homosexuals).
At the beginning, amongst other
associations, Casal Lambda (
Barcelona
), NOS Association (
Granada
) and COGAM itself led FEGL. Its first president is the veteran gay
activist Armand de Fluviá (decorated with the
Gran Cruz de Sant Jordi, the most prestigious honour of
Catalonia
).
Later, other association
as «
28 de junio»
(Jaén) and Christians Gays of
Catalonia
joined the Federation. At the end of the 90s, and after a process of
convergence which comes from a several GLBT organizations national meetings to
prepare a law proposal on same-sex couples, the Federation becomes stronger
with the entrance of new important associations such as Gehitu (Basque
Country), Alega (Cantabria), Gamá (Canary Islands) or Col-lectiu Lambda
(Valencia).
Along with the Federations organizational
development, reflections and debates within the GLBT movement go further and
the claim for the marriage right as expression of legal equality and social
respect substitutes the petition for a same-sex couples law. From 1997 until
February 2003, the Federation is led by the lawyer Pedro Zerolo, executive
member of COGAM since the beginning of the 90s and, today, member of Madrid
City Council for the Socialist Party (PSOE). During his term of office, and
with the new federative entities, two Conferences are celebrated to refund FELG
that in 2002 receives the new denomination FELGT (
Lesbian,
Gay, Transgender and Bisexual State Federation); the Federation starts to open
its field of action to other groups such as transgenders and bisexuals, and
include lesbian activists in the leadership of the Spanish GLBT movement.
Important activists were at the head of FELGT, such as
Iñigo Lamarca, today Ararteko (ombudsman) of the Basque People and in the past
president of Gehitu, Juana Ramos (president of the association Transexualia) or
Miguel Ángel Fernández (general co-ordinator of Col.lectiu Lambda).
During all these years, especially since the end of
the 90s, FELGT led the social movement for GLBT rights and has been directly
involved in political and institutional dialogue to improve the respect for
sexual minorities. FELGT has reported social and legal homophobic situations,
aggressions, hostility from the reactionary section of the Spanish society in
recognizing equality for the GLBT groups. In this way FELGT has focused its
attention in turning the 28th of June, gay pride day, as an
expression of legal equality claim and of a demand of respect for the diversity
we represent. Other political initiatives have been planned and during the
eight years government of Popular Party (conservative), the these initiatives
smashed against its intransigency in front of any proposal which could imply
and improvement for gays, lesbians, transgenders and bisexuals. Other important
campaigns of political intervention have been developed such as the one under
the motto VOTA ROSA (Vote Pink) at every electoral day. FELGT has faced up to
all the attacks and insults coming from Catholic hierarchy and its allies
against our collective.
Moreover, FELGT since several years maintains an important
commitment for the struggle against HIV/AIDS claiming also for solidarity with
HIV+ people. Also the vision of sexual diversity has been widening after the
incorporation of the transgender associative movement which, in the last years,
got more visibility thanks to this strategic alliance and is getting much in
terms of specific legal and medical reforms the transgender people claim.
In its action FELGT has the political aim to consider
diversity in a wide perspective, including various groups as much as possible:
men and women, young, adult and elderly people, people with handicaps,
territorial diversity, migrants... Difficulties to make progress in all these
fields are huge but the challenge we face deserves this effort.
Since February 2003, FELGT is led by Beatriz Gimeno
feminist activist of great experience. Gimeno was re-elected as president of the Federation at the 3rd
congress held in May 2005 in Madrid. On June 30, 2005 the Congress of
Deputies closed the parliamentary approval of the reform of the civil
code to recognize the right to marriage for gay and lesbian couples.
Thus FELGT saw the completion of its historical claims.
In 2007, after the fourth congress of the FELGT, B was added to
the symbol, the FELGT going to be FELGTB. Also, Antonio Poveda,
historical and militant union activist LGTB coming from Lambda was
elected as President of the FELGTB.
