  • Peter Moore Interview: DLC, Wii, and the Future of Videogame Motorsports

EA Sports president Peter Moore wears his fandom on his sleeve. Whether he's championing a new sports game or chatting about his passion for his beloved Liverpool F.C., Moore is never at a loss for words when it comes to sport. At last night's EA Sports Season Opener in San Francisco, I got a chance to sit down with Moore and discuss some of the recent developments at the brand. During the interview, we discussed topics as varied as the current state of EA Sports games on the Wii, the future of organized motorsports games at the publisher, and the increasing prevalence of sports-game DLC.

GameSpot: Let's start with the Wii. I'm curious about the Freestyle label, and what you've learned about Wii owners on the Freestyle label last year, and if you think these are going to change this year.

Peter Moore: Well, I think Freestyle is an interesting thing. One thing we are learning--and, again, most of what we just talked about [during Moore's Season Opener presentation] you continue having to do things in real time. You learn lessons. You move on. You don't dwell on things that are not working as well as you know, and you move on.

And Freestyle--our ability to bring different types of games that we have had time for, we're nailing what the Wii consumer is looking for. I think we're learning. And while I would still again do things like FaceBreaker and... Celebrity Sports Showdown, we would probably, in retrospect, do them slightly differently.

  • Tiger Woods 10: Now I Stink at Fake Golf Too

I'm not ashamed to admit that I've been having a rough time with my golf swing of late. In late summer of last year I took up golf again, after a long absence from the game. Of course, for me, "golf" meant hitting a bucket of balls every couple of days at the local practice range, and watching my ball veer off in every direction but straight ahead. I even took a lesson from a pro who declared my swing plane "interesting." I think that was his polite way of telling me I suck.

Anyway, being a fan of EA Sports' Tiger Woods series, I've been closely following--but not playing--the series on the Wii, while choosing to actually play the 360 version of the game. The developers behind the game have been working hard for a couple of years now in trying to perfect the swing interface between what you do with the Wii Remote and what your golfer is doing on the screen. After seeing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for Wii for the first time yesterday, and swinging the virtual club with the Wii MotionPlus controls, I have to say they might be as close to "nailing it" as they're going to get.

  • Talking Hoops With Mr. Vitale

Before I began my interview with Dick Vitale, I thought that I'd have to transcribe half the interview in all capital letters. This is the guy, after all, who coined phrases like "SLAP A LAPPER NAPPER!" and "DIAPER DANDY!" as well as ending every other sentence with "BABY!" I figured Dick would be the same maniacally energetic personality in a phone interview that he is on TV. It's not exactly the case. While Dick's love of basketball (and all sports) shines through at all times, it seems Dickie-V looks to save his energy for game-time. In celebration of today's release of the download-only NCAA Basketball 09: March Madness Edition today on Xbox Live, and Selection Sunday this coming weekend, here's my recent conversation with Dickie-V, touching on his playing, coaching, and broadcast career, and his involvement with the EA Sports college hoops series.

GameSpot: I know that you have, obviously, some coaching experience and a lot of broadcasting experience. But I'm wondering if you can tell me about your playing days.

Dick Vitale: You know, I was a marginal player at best. I had no speed, I had no quickness, couldn't defend anybody. I like to think I could shoot the ball. But I played some high school basketball, very limited, like a Division2 college level. I played at Seton Hall Paterson Division, played a year or two. But I put all my time, really, in trying to go to clinics, learn about the game and then coached on the junior high level, the high school level, the collegiate level, the professional level. And then went to television, where for 30 years I got the best record in America, because we'd never lose a game, man. I've won over a thousand games.
