Best PlayStation 2 Game

Looking at the contenders for Best PlayStation 2 Game of 2004, all of which are highly accomplished sequels to games with extremely devoted fan bases, it's easy to see that it's been an incredible year for the PlayStation 2--possibly the best, even. And with the next generation of hardware arriving more quickly than you might think, this is arguably going to be the last truly great year for the PS2.

We've given great consideration to every aspect of each game's execution--the graphics, the sound design, the gameplay mechanics, the story--as well as more-abstract concepts, such as the game's impact on the industry at large, and that ever-elusive "fun" factor. These are the games we feel stand out from the crowd. It was tough narrowing the field down to these five finalists, but, truly, only one is going to come out the winner.
