Even for the TT. Connected PSD, FC, ILY, no boy/girl spots, basement interview, PSD working only for folks with donor potential-most of the info is bs. Only useful advice was a comment that if an experienced PSD gives you a firm opinion on DC's chances, she is probably correct. Be yourself and it is not your admission,it is your child who has to shine-you can only decrease the chances by overselling, lying or showing signs of being a PITA

Having a great kid who tests well really works

[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:49 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]my very shy kid who i was really worried about ended up doing great on the ERB and playdates, fwiw. took us by complete surprise.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:52 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Which reminds me. Try to schedule first playdates/interviews at schools on the bottom of your list.

[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:55 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]We went through process a few years ago. Dc's first playdate was at our fc tt. Which is where dc currently attends first grade. Kid either does well or he/she doesn't.

[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:07 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]do you have a shy kid? i doubt it because if you did you would know this is not true. if you familiarize a shy kid with the process often they will be more outgoing, quicker to warm up the more they get used to it.

prep for ERB, write essays over the summer, if you have a clear FC write a FC letter
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:49 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]That is actually good advice. Also be prepared for interviews and make sure DH seems engaged.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:50 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ittta. And apply widely.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:51 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]NP. I wouldn't apply to a school you wouldn't send DC to. The "safety" school could very well end up being your only accept and if its not high on your list and you get WLs somewhere else, you have quite a dilemma.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:54 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ITA. Also, if you change your mind about a category of schools (e.g., SS vs coed), withdraw application or at the very least make it clear to your PSD.

and do as many spring tours as you can (especially Dalton, since Babby does the spring tours). Sign up immediately for the Dalton spring tour.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:54 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]If the erb is not great touring Dalton at every available opportunity will not help
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:05 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Of course, but you're going to have to tour anyway so why not do it in the Spring with Babby?
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:09 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Babby part is bs, but seeing a good school helps compare schools
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:25 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Why BS? She really is the best ambassador for the school, and touring with her makes you more comfortable interviewing with her.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:32 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Did you tour and interview with her and got in?
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:36 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Toured and interviewed with her. WL.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:37 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Shut out of all tours, but did not seem to hurt us at the interview
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:42 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Not that it's a big deal, just saying that if you were starting now, it would be preferable to do the spring tour with Babby.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:58 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
Touring in the spring at Dalton may also help you formulate that essay, which is very Dalton-specific. I spent so much time on it in the fall, got it in late, which I think affected our chances -- they probably didn't think we were as interested (DS waitlisted)
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:44 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]People have to act themselves and not oversell. Need to have the basic intelligence to get the fact that Dalton is probably a bit different and very competitive. If they like your package you get in, no prep can help.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:49 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
I always think people who feel the need to prep for erb (which you're not supposed to do--per erb office) have dim kids.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:56 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]you're dead wrong. prepping can make the difference between a 97 and a high 99. 97 is run of the mill, but a 99 will get a second look. When you're trying for the top 30 spots in 1000 applicants, every little thing counts.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:58 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Well, my kid got a "high 99" with NO prepping.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:06 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]how is that relevant? no one said you can't get 99 w/o prep.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:14 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
ITA. This is the one time people are being honest with you. Most of those super high scores come from prepping.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:07 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I was very happy with my unprepped 97. To me a 99 is a prepped 97, that's all. With rare exception.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:11 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Eh, maybe, but the 99x3 really caught people's interest.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:13 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Yeah. So did my kid's genuine one. All I did was ensure a good night's sleep and a decent breakfast.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:16 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]What kind of a sorry person are you that you're on a message board trying to justify your dc's test score. OP's question was about giving advice to get ahead in the game, responders are answering to that. You're not adding any value to this conversation.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:21 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]So, you're fine with cheating? ERB explicitly states not to prep. As do decent psds.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:23 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]it's cheating if you buy the test, it's NOT cheating if you teach dc the skills necessary to do well on the test.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ITA. For example, one thing I did was to work on my DC's pencil grip and handwriting skills. Still didn't do that well on coding, but much better than he would have done otherwise.

i agree with write a fc if you have one. we did not commit to one school bc we liked 4-5 schools and figured one would pan out since dc had great test scores, and school report. luckily one did pan out, but not one in top 3. i would not take that chance again.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:55 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I agree with this. we also did not FC and I think its why we ended up with 3 WLs.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:57 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]That was us too (last year). In the end, WL at D and B and did not send FC to school #3 because hoped that D or B would work out. Wish we had sent FC to #3 since we ended up at #6.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 06:57 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]^^^which leads to my next piece of advice: Listen to your PSD and try to read between the lines. I think my PSD was trying to be nice and not say "you're not getting in." Instead she said things like "D really loves you, but it's a bad year for girls." Should have known that meant WL.

My advice after having done this twice is to look at a broad variety of schools, start in the spring with touring the schools that offer spring tours, and to do all of the above, except I didn't do any test prep, so I can't comment on that. I would also do the erbs in the spring instead of the fall/winter if you can, because the dc's score is good info to have when deciding where to apply in the fall. I also had a great deal of communication with my psd, which I think was helpful for me this time around, but you may not have that option. Good luck -

Be as serious about any public school choices you have as you are with your private school choices. Do the SB for Hunter (if you live in Manhattan), take the OLSAT, find out about unzoned schools and/or lottery possibilities. Tour these schools if you can - talk to neighbors and friends about them. Knowing about the public schools can only help if your dc is shut out.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:29 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ITA, and it can also help you make a more focused list. After touring our public (41), I decided not to apply to a number of schools that I didn't think were worth $30k more than PS41.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:32 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ITA w/this strategy. After doing so, I narrowed down our list of schools SIGNIFICANTLY, and only applied to the 3-4 that we felt offered a COMPELLING value over FREE. This selectivity, in turn, resonated well w/a lot of the schools. It's a risky strategy, but we got into 3/4 schools we applied to.

ITTA. When you get freaked about the possibility of rejects you will know what it really means (probably that your kid will be okay).
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 07:36 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
Be on good terms with PSD. Avoid being PITA at ALL COSTS. Be supportive of preschool in whatever way you can. Take spring tours. Write essays early and get applications in. Take ERB early to take some pressure off in the fall.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 08:29 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Assuming your DC is in the ballpark based on ERBs, playdate, your interview, essays, love letters, etc..., then strategic use of first choice CALL (since first choice letters are officially ruled out) and effective PSD who works with you and talks to the schools are the keys.
[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 08:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]don't get pregnant and have a db due in the fall when you are applying.

DS has a November 1st bday. Should I go through the K admission process this fall for 2010 (nursery school advisor thinks he'd be ok as a 4 year old going on 5) but I'm not sure. I think he'd be ready to start K next year as well, but I've read so many people getting shut down because their DC has a summer/fall DOB. Thoughts?
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.15.09, 04:35 PM [ Flag ]Can't do private for 2010 if ds will only be 4 on Sept 1, 2010. The cutoff birthdate is Sept. 1. You could do public, which has a cutoff date of Dec. 31.

[ Reply | Options ]02.15.09, 03:42 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]If you are SO but on some waitlists you are likely to get some great options. OTOH very few people seem to get how bad the economy will be by September even, depending on your family's financial situation, it might be a blessing in disguise to be SO. I think some of the less wealthy schools (privates) will have serious problems this year. My family is associated with one and so many families of kids in grades 2-4 (families I know) are wondering how they will pay. The school has very small endowment so it won't be saved by that. You are certainly better off in public than in a private without a decent endowment to cushion them in the coming few years. GL and a big hug to your dc.

Can someone explain to a novice here what is the significance of a June birthday, or later? Why would that be a disadvantage for a kindergarten applicant? thanks.

Would love idea of schools that might be good for my dd: she is currently in 4th grade in gen ed public. She has been miserable socially for 3 1/2 years in NYC -- can't seem to find a group of peers who "get" her. She is a Dec bday, so young, but has been reading on level Z since late last year, is never challenged, gets lazy with her work because I think it takes less and less effort on her part to get by. She can make friends outside of school easily, but has no very close friends. She is clueless about pop culture because her nose is always in a book (she knows tons about Harry Potter, though!). Because she's in public, I have no idea where to begin to look at other options. Oh, when she was 5 she scored 97 on the ERB, but we never applied anywhere for various reasons.

I would get her re-tested, first of all. She sounds very bright - and she's at a better age now to get a sense of just how bright. Plus the information will help you gauge her needs and chances better.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 04:30 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Many privates would be good for her. I'd tour and apply to a bunch, but Trevor, Marymount, Calhoun are schools that come to mind.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 04:42 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I had to leave gen ed public for the same reasons. We're very happy, dd is a different child, the school we're in is one of the above. My dd did great with kids out of school and in school they didn't seem to choose to bond with her. She reads all the time, she never liked Hannah Montana. GL

I can't help - only have a kindergartener, but I would recommend buying the Goldman book (Guide to NYC Private Schools) and just read through it. It's very thick and a little overwhelming but it does give you a feel for the schools (while some sound strikingly similar). It did help us narrow down choices and was a good starting point.

I am a nanny in NYC. I don't have many nanny friends, and the ones I do have are very discreet about their jobs, as am I, because I work for a high-profile family. So I'm posting here, to ask a few questions about salaries/benefits typically offered to nannies in NYC. My job is very demanding, and the family expects a lot from me. I work very hard, and find my job very rewarding. I believe they are extremely generous with me. I'm wondering what is the highest salary and benefits package/perks you've heard of being offered to a nanny? I want to see where I fit in.
32 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.13.09, 11:45 PM [ Flag ]I don't know the highest but we pay $850./week (8:00-5:00) on the books - with taxes, etc. calculated so that take home is $850. plus health care and bonus of 2 weeks salary at New Year's. 1 child. Pay $25./hour for extra time. Great nanny.

I'm a manny on the UES. My rate of pay is $38/hour and I work a full 40-hour week. I charge time-and-a-half for any overtime and/or weekend work, but my employers are good about adhering to my 40-hour schedule. I don't do housework, I don't cook, and I don't run errands -- my only responsibility is the children. VERY occasionally, if my employers are in a bind and it's convenient for me, I'll run a quick errand or two for them, but I've made it clear they can't make a habit of it. I'm a child-care professional, and I expect to be treated as such -- I am NOT "domestic help". Luckily, my employers recognize that.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:34 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]What makes you worth 2x the going rate for top nannies? Not snarky, but very curious. You can hire a grad student from NYU for significantly less. I'm wondering what value added you provide? $25/hour would get you a very happy and professional nanny, offer $30/hour and you can probably hire away the best nanny you've ever seen, so why pay $38?
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:05 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]This is the deal I negotiated. I'm college educated, white, American, and over 35. I have wisdom and responsibility that a college kid doesn't bring to the table. My employers seem to feel it's a fair rate.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:07 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]My friends' former live in nanny made $800 net cash (employer paid all taxes) plus employer paid health care, paid vacation, room/board (obviously), car (for work & personal use), credit card (for any household expenses). 50 hours/week, no OT as there was also a night and weekend nanny.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 07:09 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]38$ person above makes about 80,000/year, more than a lot of lawyers, doctors and so forth. I guess it's just like anything, you can get a $600 haircut and a 25$ haircut. Also, once you're in those circles that pay that kind of money, you're in and will be paid accordingly. I am sure there are "nannies" who charge even more. I mean, just as a matter of principle, Madonna and the like, is not going to pay less than $100,000 to her childcare employees...
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 08:05 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Exactly. There are cheap 20K/year "Chevy" nannies, and then there are upscale $80K/year "Mercedes" nannies. Not saying that either one is good or bad, but in the end you always get what you pay for.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 08:34 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]You don't "always" get what you pay for, the majority of the time probably but not "always".

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 11:46 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Manny here. I'm on the books, three kids, UES (as I stated ... please pay attention), there is domestic help, and no, both parents don't work full time. But I do.
[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 12:07 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]I'll pardon your skewed tone of entitlement, as I did take note of your inclusion of white, over 35, college educated and American in your list of 'qualifications'(all of those also apply to George Bush and a legion of overpaid, overvalued hustlers). The UES isn't an area; it's a region. Perhaps I should've said neighborhood.Your lack of any humility is assuring, as it practically guarantees your butt will hit reality harder than someone with the grace to acknowledge their good fortune-and we all fall on our butts sometimes.

NP: Manny, you ARE full of it. It's one thing to list your working conditions and the terms of your employment, it's another to be sanctimonious and above it all. Lots of nannies do housework, run errands, etc. Yes, of course, your responsibility is the children, and that's worth stating. But is it worth it to tack on "if... it's convenient for me, I'll run a quick errand... but I've made it clear they can't make a habit of it"

Top agency told me it was very very generous. Unfortunately our job and financial situation has totally changed and we have had to restructure hours and compensation significantly. We are not a high profile family but believe strongly in taking care of the person who cares for our 2 DCs while we are at work - also ensures that she is very unlikely to leave for another job which provides stability to our family. Over the years I have seen little correlation between a family's means and generosity. Know some very wealthy people who are the cheapest humans you could come across and have huge turnover in their homes and some merely affluent families who are much more generous. Comes down mostly to values and managerial skills.

[ Reply | Options ]02.14.09, 05:57 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]OP here: thanks everyone for your responses. All this does give me some info on where I fit in on the scale of nanny salaries/benefits. Currently I make $85K a year salary with yearly bonus, with full health benefits (but excluding dental/vision). My work week is setup as 40 hrs, but most of the time, I work more (around 45). I have around 10 weeks of paid vacation per year. I have no cleaning or cooking responsibilities (there are housekeepers and a chef) but I often try to help out if I can. I am extremely happy in my position, and feel that my compensation is fair. I do, however, think I'm paid a higher salary than most because 1) my employers expect nothing but the best work every day and the job is INTENSE, and 2) they are high-profile, so they may tend to pay more in that circle.

My kid is in preschool at Grace Church School. I'm finding the atmosphere there increasingly bad. There have been multiple parties where only some subset of the kids were invited (and not only girls, or only one class, etc.). Needless to say, the school tries to avoid it--it's against school policy.
15 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.13.09, 06:47 AM [ Flag ]Oops--I accidentally posted too soon. Anyway, any advice on what to do? I'm considering pulling my kid out. I'm also hoping that more kids will be admitted with parents that are more friendly.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 06:51 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Bummer. It sucks to be in a school where the parents behave like it is junior high. How are the academics and in-class environment for you kid.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 06:54 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]The academics seem good, although it's early childhood, so it's tough to tell. In class environment seems pretty good, although I'm starting to see some cliques among the kids that mirror those of the parents.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:07 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
why would you pull dc out just because of the b-day party thing?
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:11 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I had a similar experience with a downtown early childhood program. The parents were really snotty and cliquish. As an older mommy, I really felt shut out socially. The academics in our program were not strong, so we pulled. But if we had been in a strong academic program AND my child had a least one or two friends, I would have stayed. Check out your child's experience socially---does she/he have any friends?
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:14 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]yes, although not as much as in her nursery. that's what makes it a tough call.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:09 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
its really expensive to throw a big party these days. maybe not so nice but im sure the parents would have done it differently if they could have
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:33 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]ita. We decided to only invite three friends from class due to money.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:57 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I never bought the whole class thing.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:02 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Yeah, it's defintely not an expense thing. The parents generally have plenty of money and the ones who have not invited the whole class. And it's not just a bday party thing. Instead it's more symptomatic of a unfriendly and cliquish atmosphere among the parents. If it's just the parents that's ok, but I'm worried that the kids will eventually reflect their parents
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:07 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
I was looking into party locations (our apartment is too small)...They run between 700-1500 dollars and that is only for 10 kids (you pay extra for food, cake, entertainment...). There will be no b-day for the whole class at that price.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:04 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I don't like the whole exclusion of kids from birthday parties, but how old is your dc? Id' say if dc is under 4 it's not a big deal to the kids. I don't think they really care/get it. It's when they are 4 and older that I think they may have hurt feelings.

[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 06:39 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Is he in preschool now? Do they offer the ERB in the spring?
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 07:01 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]really bad idea to put dc in public pre-k the year before you are applying to private. Public teachers don't want to fill out all those reports and have no incentive to be helpful.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:25 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Ugh. The thing is, the public pre-K is actually stronger than the 4s program at the private school where he is now. I can't see paying for a weaker program.
[ Reply | Options ]02.13.09, 08:32 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
I have a DS with a January birthday. PSD told me that, in general, it's better to wait until child is 4-1/2 to take the ERB. I wanted to have the results in hand before the application process started, and DS easily separates, so I took him to the ERB office over the summer.

Caught in between. Late fall birthday, girl in public school admitted to TT independent school for 5th grade and to other TT independent school for 6th grade. Is "redoing" the 5th grade a good thing, or a mistake?
38 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.12.09, 07:02 PM [ Flag ]A mistake -- all this redoing in NYC is bs
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:05 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Go to the school you like better, don't stress the grade thing. Repeating 5th will be easier academically and make her an older kid for her grade. Doing 6th will make her very young for grade in private school and more challenging academically.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:05 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]It really depends on the dc. Which school do you feel is a better fit.

I think it depends on how she is as a student. If very strong, then certainly do not repeat. I think if she was admitted to some tt as a 6th then probably a very strong student. BTDT with a boy. He was in mixed age classes and then applied to NYC privates for either 5th or 6th (let the DOA's decided which they thought appropriate). He has a March birthday so was actually about 6 months younger than your child (by age should have gone into 5th). He is 13 now and in 9th, doing extremely well at tt high school (changed schools for HS into more academically challenging program). We have no regrets. If your child is very gifted academically then she can probably handle 6th. I doubt any tt middle school would admit a young child into 6th if she were not well qualified. Why repeat 5th?
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:09 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]btw he also tested into Stuy, but chose tt instead. There were kids taking the test who were already 15, but my 12 yo got in. [ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:21 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Is your ds into sports at all? I can't imagine many 12 yo would have any shot of making a team competing with 15 yos.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:27 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]thankfully, no, although he did join a team this year (a "no cut" team). His "sport" is singing, and luckily his soprano changed to tenor over the summer just before 9th grade.

why would you want her to repeat-is there a problem
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:18 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]1) Dalton makes a nice impression.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:20 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]2) it's tempting to have her be among the older kids after lots of years in which she was among the younger in public school.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:21 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]3) but, mostly, instinctively, wouldn't want her to repeat.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:22 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]np: My dd may be in the same situation in a couple of years, so I have thought about it. I think if it was SS girls' school, I would not want my dc to be significantly youngest than the rest of the class. While extremely bright and excellent student, being one of the youngest is not great for her socially even now in public, and if they rest of the class was 6 months older it would definitely be a problem. Now with co-ed school there are boys who tend to be less mature so it may be ok, but only you can see how she does socially now with being on the young end and if having a few months older peer group could be detrimental to her.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:26 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]
would that affect her self esteem/ and having to explain to her classmates...thats a rough age.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:26 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]the classmates are used to it and she would still be younger than at least 5-6 kids in the class if not more, this is totally not an issue. And I don't think going from public you'd repeat the same curriculum either.

i wouldn't worry about repeating a grade. dalton would put the kid in 5th because she would fit right in the age range of that grade at that school. i don't think it's necessarily good or bad to repeat, you have to look at this particular situation
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 09:20 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]my brilliant friend OPTED to repeat 10th grade when she went to boarding school (TT prep school) in order to have 3 years there rather than 2 years - she actually requested to do this. she was certainly not bored and while she's smart enough that she would have gone anywhere regard;es
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 09:24 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]^^^ regardless, i could see a somewhat less brilliant student getting a real advantage by that extra year. (oh, the reason they let her repeat was bc she had skipped a grade in early elem so she was "young")

The aggression gets worse with time and your ds's learn to treat women badly, while dd's learn to be treated badly. Plan an exit strategy. I moved in with my mother and sent dc's to local public school. DH was happy to be rid of us as long as it didn't cost him money. I remarried a kind man who remembers my birthday, VD, Mother's Day and our anniversary. Dc's see how well he treats me and will do the same for their spouses.

Why is Speyer's birthday cutoff December 31st if it is a private school?
3 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.12.09, 03:48 PM [ Flag ]because every school can set their own cut off. it's not like all private schools have to have the earlier cut off
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 03:52 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Then why did I hear of a dc who has a fall b-day (will be 5 before 12/31) is applying for K not for this Sept, but next? What's going on with this school?

[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 10:48 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]np: then i wouldn't worry about it. once ds started going to friends' parties, he wanted to have his own. if he hadn't asked, we would've just gone out to dinner as a family. some kids don't want a party... too shy to be the center of attention. friend's ds was this way

Do I really have to write thank you notes for my 4 year old's birthday party presents? Do I have to write them all cutesy in the first person like he really has anything to do with them? I just don't have the energy.
9 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]02.12.09, 07:11 AM [ Flag ]do you really have to ask if you should write thank you notes? you can write them from you
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:12 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I think you do need to send them, but no need to be cutesy. Just a simple thanks for the gift, Johnny really likes playing with it, thanks for coming to party. End of story. How long can it take? Do it while watching TV one night.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:13 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]If your four year old can write Thank You Love Susie - then let her do it. If not you do it. From you.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:19 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]yes you do need to write ty notes. Just say "Dear Jane, Thank you for the truck and for coming to my party. Love," and have your child sign his own name.

People love to get thank you cards, esp "from" kids. It doesn't have to be cutesy but you need to send a ty.
[ Reply | Options ]02.12.09, 07:29 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]If they were received at the party (opened during the party) then I say no...since he thanked them then. If not opened during then quick thank you but nothing cute!
