The return of the Dark Lord

Friday, 3rd October 2008

Until today, I thought this Labour government no longer had the capacity to shock me. How wrong I was. The return of Peter Mandelson to the Cabinet made me fall off my chair. It’s not just that it shows Brown is so desperate to rescue New Labour from disaster that he calls upon his deadliest enemy for help – and also demonstrates that, far from exulting in Brown’s parlous state, the Blairites grasp that it’s all hands to the Labour pump to stave off the impending electoral rout by the Tories. It’s not just that, by bringing in such a political retread, it’s backwards to the future -- or should that be forwards to the past -- and thus maladroitly hands the Tories such a gift by bringing back the politician who, more than anyone else, is identified with manipulation and spin. No, what’s really jaw-dropping is that Mandelson not once but twice lost his government job because of deeply questionable behaviour .

His first resignation in 1998 was over a conflict of interest over a loan he had taken to buy a house (which he had also not declared to his building society) from Geoffrey Robinson, a millionaire Labour MP whose business dealings were being investigated by Mandelson’s own government department. The second resignation in 2001 was over claims he had inappropriately interceded in a British passport application on behalf of an Indian businessman whose family was helping sponsor the then beleaguered Millennium Dome. Although an independent inquiry exonerated him, he had nevertheless been caught out in being distinctly economical with the truth by claiming that he had been only peripherally involved because his private secretary had dealt with the matter, only to admit subsequently that he had indeed personally telephoned the minister involved in this application on the businessman’s behalf.

In any recognisably ethical universe, these scandals would have seen him drummed out of political life altogether rather than be rewarded, as he was, with a lucrative EU sinecure. And now he is to return for a third time to Cabinet government!

Peter Mandelson embodies what British voters most detest about New Labour: its utter absence of integrity and the cynical contempt in which it holds the public. The return yet again of this ultimate master of the dark arts can only destroy what’s left of Brown’s (always absurd) public image as the custodian of stern political principle marooned in a party of spivs.

Mandelson brought New Labour into this world. As it staggers towards oblivion under Brown, Mandelson has been parachuted in as a kind of super-nanny to shoulder aside its patently dysfunctional Caledonian parent and administer the cod liver oil. Problem is, it’s not Mary Poppins who’s arrived on her umbrella; it’s You-Know-Who.

The point of the Labour party is to gain power at any cost. They will prostitute themselves to any degree to remain in power. as long as they get the occasional tidbit such as fox hunting, they will be rapturous about tax increases for the poor.

The modern Labour person has no morals, no political conviction, no ideals, they just want to be in power.

Mandy, his Brazilian boyfriend, Cambell, these are all people associated with power. So Brown, a towering intellectual of great personal integrity, the son of the manse, the champion of the poor, welcomes them back with open arms.

Then again, if you hate all of your party, and they hate you, what's a bit more emnity in the stew?

The architect of Britain's modified and modernised Gramscian edifice has returned for the periodical examination of the foundations; to assess the wear and tear on the infrastructure and to advise the latest caretaker on what he has to do in the interim before he is replaced as the Prime Minister of the Queen's Realm. MendaciousOne will undoubtedly see that the whole house of cards is wobbling in the wind of change; so what other tricks are up his sleeve to create yet another illusion? You are right, Melanie, the Prince of Darkness, having had further instruction from the gurus of Continent of Machiavelli, has been elevated to the exalted plane of Lord of Darkness; the Devil and all his works are not only extant, but rampant. The AntiChrist, not just his handmaiden, is back in No. 10.
Cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of war!

You have a year of hard work ahead of you Master Cameron, loose the biggest beasts you can revive from their canine sanctuaries; exercise them, get them barking! Get the old scribes scribbling. Get the young turks into battle training and make the simulated battlefields rugged and realistic. It's the last chance before the Long March encircles the Globe.

This is even more serious than the Obamarama over the herring pond. They will probably have to experience four years of crypto-Marxist occupation of the White House before they awaken to what's happening - the naivity is breathtaking.

We know what's happening here, having had a decade to watch it in action. You are the Man with the Plan; how do we implement it HMLOTO?

Mistake or masterstroke? You decide.

Personally I've always felt that only Mandelson could rival Blair in terms of presentation and ability to deploy political jujistu to turn over your enemies.

If I was Cameron I'd be very worried.

Is this the deal:

Gordon says to PM. Join me in government, destroy my enemies, let me win the next election. I will then stand down before the election after that and allow you to take over as PM, by which time we will have found you a safe seat again.

And it's hardly mentioned by the democracy-light Labour Government that the unelected Mandelson will have to be made a Lord to carry out his duties. Lord Mandelson of Brussels?

Lord Mandelson of Fibbstold-Daley

No field it's not the deal. He's been elevated to the Lords. It's more a case of, "I'm Mandy, buy me."

Gordon, rmember this old adage:

When you sup with the devil sup with a long spoon.

Same as before

Sorry what was the point of the Conferences and all this kow towing Brown did about trying harder - He has lied again, probably once too often, what do we want we want an election, when do we want it we want it now, why do we want it, cos we no longer regard Politicians who fib and manoeuvre as worthy of any respect - and they are morally bankrupt anyway. To know the right thing to do and not to do it, that is sin. Blairs faith foundation will fail for one very very oh so obvious reason...........answers on a postcard

it is indeed in my view a masterstroke.

labour is absolutely ruthless
they have no shame whatsoever

they pulled the rabbit out of the hat

I dont honestly however know what the hell is Mandy thinking.

From the cushiest job on earth to back to britain.....

Welcome back Mel.
I regretfully observe that despite your finely tuned and humane acuity you are just a bit prejudiced on some issues. Lord M, as we must learn to call him, is one of the most accomplished, able and importabt politicians of our time both "resignation" issues have more than a hint of the everyday behaviour of such operators (in at least one case with no obvious venal - arguably public spirited - motivation; and the other everyday conduct amongst the rich) being exposed and given prominence because of his exceptional characteristics. All this "most hated" stuff! reminds me of what Lennon is supposed to have recommended as Brian Epsteins autobiography title Queer Jew.
There is something truly disturbing about the way in which this brilliant man is casually denigrated.
Think on.

Gordon wants one person in government who is more unpopular than he is.

No more spin? was that the promis. His re-shuffle suggests that even more than before trying to look good through spin and presentation is going to be more important than trying to look good by doing a good job.

The person most at risk here is Gordon Brown himself. He has just appointed his own political executioner.

Lord Peter has no political base in either the party or the country. He has no set of allies to worry about, he can do and say what he likes. Mandelson is a congenitally devisive character, a loose cannon beyond Gordon Brown's control.

He will bring Gordon Brown down before the next election because he never thought that Gordon would be a successful Prime Minister for New Labour. Either by design or through another bout of brainless hubris, Mandelson will do for Brown.

At least there is some comfort in the fact that the man has great talent, something that is much needed in this government -I will leave the judgement of his morality to the rest of you ,whilst he wrestles with our economic problems with the monetary imagination he has displayed in the past.

Frank P: "The architect of Britain's modified and modernised Gramscian edifice has returned for the periodical examination of the foundations."

Indeed. This is a rearguard action by Brown to help him keep the lid on things. It'd be useful if GB also made him a Privvy Counselor because that rumbling in the basement is vibration caused by the sewers backing up. But no matter how many of them they recall to sit on the problem it is only a matter of time before the whole lot explodes. Manhole covers launched skyward on and under a shower of New Labour.

The amount of media venom, spite and general unpleasantness over the reappointment of Peter Mandelson to the cabinet is quite ridiculous. Melanie Phillips predictably and boringly joins in the tirade. Pathetic.

Aye, Ian G. Tha's reet abaht t'adage. But difficult for the rest of us to AVOID supping at all!

Very cynical, isn't it - this Marxist obsession with titles? Do they think that, in response, we will sup, or we must sup? Or are they blind to their own vanity?

Has Peter Mandelson EVER had a real job outside politics.? You know, a real job in the real world. People like him seem to just drift through life stepping off one luxuriant gravy train to board another.

I'd love to witness some media hack ask him that one question.

Ian G. -

I was suggesting the safe seat would follow resignation from peerage in the next term - after the Labour Party had been well and truly softened up.

Here's another thought: did Brown go to Blair and say - OK you've got me, I realise I can't survive as PM if you are determined to use your lot to savage and undermine me. But if I don't go quietly the Party will be irredeemably damaged and with it your legacy as well. So tell me, Tony, what do I have to do to convince you to let me survive as Prime Minister at least until after the next election, assuming we can win that?

And Tony says: there's only one thing - one thing...there's no way you can save Labour. There's only one man I know apart from myself who can do that...Peter Mandelson. If you bring him back into the Cabinet and appoint him as your election strategist, then OK, I'll call off my rottweilers. But you can't stay for any longer than I did after the last election. Agreed?

Mandy will become Prime Minister? Some of you teally ought to get around more. The detestation British people feel for this creepy person is almost universal. Give me an example, pray, of his brilliance? He foisted Blair on us. No. We did that ourselves. He brought about the Labour victory of 97. No. Even the Tories can't rule for ever. Though now they might.

After labour loose in Glenrothes and are slapped silly at the Euro elections {providing people can be bothered to vote} he wont be in a job.Mandy and Milliband will forge the new dawn......and stay in opposition for 10 years.

EUSSR GO HOME

October 5th, 2008 10:34pm

Re D. Gray: Vote at eu elections? 1. Is there any point? 2. Would staying away from their "polls" be the best sign that we reject euSSR? 3. Could we picket their "polls" with signs to the effect of: EUSSR GO HOME?

EUSSR GO HOME

October 5th, 2008 11:17pm

Sorry - Bad mistake: I really didn't mean 'picket' -- that'd make us as bad as them, but more obvious!

My question was whether we should somehow decorate the 'polls' with such slogans.
