LEGO Halo Bungie's Next Project?
In what I assume to be EGM's big April Fool's prank, the magazine is saying that Bungie's next project is going to be LEGO Halo. Normally I love April Fools' jokes but it's only March 1st...
LucasArts isn't the only developer with a proclivity to "hit the bricks", it seems -- according to the latest issue of EGM, Bungie is currently working on a heretofore unannounced project in conjunction with Lego. The brainchild of this unholy union is -- as you've probably already guessed -- Lego Halo. Set to follow the entire storyline of the Halo trilogy, and featuring gameplay similar to the other games in the Lego crossover genre (with just a dash of traditional FPS fare mixed in), this chimera is sure to sell like hotcakes to fans of Master Chief and construction toys both -- if it actually existed, that is.

Velvet Assassin Dev Diary Vid
There be no "ass monsters" in the recently renamed Velvet Assassin:

Developer Replay Studios, along with publisher Gamecock Media Group, have announced the official name change for ’Velvet Assassin’, their upcoming stealth-action title formerly known as ‘Sabotage’. The new title creates a perfect marriage between the story of real life hero Violette Szabo and the clandestine art of sabotage she championed. From the incredibly innovative art style, storyline, and combat gameplay, Velvet Assassin is poised to revolutionize the stealth-action genre later this year.

“Rather than a trite, overused, and generic working title like ‘Sabotage,’ ‘Velvet Assassin’ captures the heart of what we’re trying to accomplish,” said Sascha Jungnickel, Creative Director at Replay Studios. “From the start we’ve wanted a game with a strong female lead that stays true to the history of Violette Szabo while pulling players into a world of dark intrigue.”

Inspired by the true story of British Agent Violette Szabo, players will take on the role of Violette Summer. Behind enemy lines in Nazi occupied Europe, Violette risks her life fighting to fell the Third Reich with anything she can get her hands on, including enemy soldiers. With no support or official backing from the British Government, Violette puts everything on the line to defeat the German war machine – one mission at a time. Velvet Assassin combines lush, surreal visuals, a ground-breaking stealth combat system and one of the most unique perspectives ever brought to gaming. Velvet Assassin is planned to release in Fall 2008 on PC and next-generation consoles.

“Most of the time a name change happens because it’s not ‘catchy’ enough or because the marketing team didn’t like it,” said Tim Hesse, Executive Producer at Gamecock Media Group. “I have to say, the Replay crew have outdone themselves by making Violette into one of the best looking stealth-killers ever. This game has come so far since last year that Sabotage just didn’t do the game justice – ‘Velvet Assassin’ sums up every aspect that makes this game great.”

EVE Online On Steam
CCP's EVE Online is the first MMOG to launch on Steam!

EVE Online: Trinity is a Sci-Fi MMORPG like no other you’ve ever encountered. As human settlers began to explore the cold, unknown reaches of space, they discovered an uncharted wormhole that led to an exotic and unclaimed sector of space. The celestial portal led these explorers to a galaxy they dubbed “New Eden.” Rich in resources, New Eden was assaulted by throngs of greedy pilots, fanatical sects of hell-bent fugitives, and mega-corporations; each hoping to stake their claims against the other. The golden age was short-lived. Millions flourished in wealth, and millions more died after the heavenly anomaly collapsed, severing one side from the other. A dark age fell upon New Eden for thousands of years, until four nations rose from the ashes of Earth’s forgotten legacy.

EVE Online: Steam Edition includes a 21-day trial and costs $14.95 per month, which happens to be the same price as a Game Time Code from Shattered Crystal, though Europeans will find it cheaper as Steam includes a $3 tax per transaction.

I wanted to like Frontlines: Fuel of War. I really did. But all goodwill and enjoyment generated by the fairly decent single-player campaign has been eroded away by the abysmal multiplayer interface and associated bugs:

  • The server browser has no progress bar or indicator, so jumps around the screen for five minutes until every server has been scanned. Are you done yet? Nope! Cue more moving...
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, nothing happens.
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, you're told the server requires a password despite the icon to the left saying it doesn't.
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, you're told the server is running a different version of the game and that you should update. You are running the same version, it says so top right.
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, you're told the server you spent five minutes refreshing isn't available when it clearly is.
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, you're told the server is full because the refreshing took so long and the servers don't auto refresh within the browser when clicked, like in Valve games.
  • You highlight a server, click Launch, and suddenly realise that the server browser is not in fact launching the server you chose, but a random server from the list. This problem can explain some of the above issues, but often it doesn't - they're being a nuisance also.
  • You finally get into a game, press tab to look at your ping, discover scoreboard doesn't show ping.
  • You spawn, except the 'Deploying' menu spins around for a random amount of time, allowing the enemy to get to the first objective before you're even on the battlefield.
  • You're waiting for a spawn, but then your spawn point is lost, so have to select another spawn point and sit through the spinning shit, again.
  • Spinning silliness prevents you from looking at the scoreboard.
  • Death leaves you staring at your body - no spectator cam, no moving the view, just stuck, for up to 10 seconds, then the spinning nonsense again.
  • There are no sensitivity and inversion sliders for specific vehicle classes - jet != helicopter != drone.
  • The AA tank is buggered. The HUD doesn't work half the time, the weapons don't lock on properly.
  • Sniper rifles absolutely ruin the game. Every other player has a sniper rifle. They have huge range, the maps all feature wide open spaces that have to be traversed, and there is little to no cover. The rifles also require no skill to use - point and shoot for the lose, or is that win?
  • When you get shot in Frontlines your view begins to blur and go red to indicate that you're close to death. However, it goes so blurry and red that you can't see where the hell you are, meaning that you're going to die. That'd be slightly annoying if you all suffered from the same problem, but people with lesser PCs won't experience the full range of its annoyingness because the effects won't be displayed.
  • The list goes on and on...
  • I'm one of the lucky ones - I could install and get the game to load. Many can't.

The official forums are filled with issues, the game is a mess, the Xbox 360 version isn't any better - Kaos, perhaps you should go back to building mods on top of other people's solid games. At least you wouldn't be able to screw up the multiplayer interface then.

Which games have the best/worst multiplayer interfaces?

Those Counter-Strike 2 rumors were much ado about nothing as the most exciting thing GT TV turned up at its visit to Valve was that the developer plans to make more plushies based on TF2 characters.

However, if Valve decided to go ahead with Counter-Strike 2, it would "re-evaluate everything but try to stay close to the heart of Counter-Strike." Sans the art style, of course.

    The History of Tomb Raider
There's a four-page article up at Retro IGN that takes a look at the successful - and at times troubled - Tomb Raider franchise and how Ms. Croft's adventures affected the gaming and cultural landscape over the years:

The phenomenon went global faster than anyone through possible, certainly faster than anyone was prepared for. Tomb Raider the game almost became an afterthought.

Eidos found itself fielding animal rights activists who didn't care for Lara ruthlessly gunning down big game. Scientists calculated her body-mass index - something nobody ever did for Pac Man - and loudly claimed nobody with those dimensions could walk upright, much less jump around. Some feminists vilified her over-objectified figure, others lauded her attitude and independence. As far as Eidos was concerned, Lara single-handedly took them from a $2.6 million deficit to a $14.5 million profit in just one year. They were damn well going to take advantage of the most unique opportunity in marketing history: a virtual sex symbol.

Toby Gard had a problem with that. The Lara Croft he invented wouldn't pose nude for anybody, and wasn't some airhead fashion model. She was cool and refined, confident, sharp witted and exceedingly deadly. She was also the property of Eidos. Decisions on the selling of Lara were made in Wimbledon, not Derby. Disillusioned by the complete lack of creative control over his own character, Gard left Core.

Siege Warfare in Warhammer Online Explained
    - 11 Comments
There's not much new here for seasoned Dark Age of Camelot vets, but Mythic has explained how keep and siege warfare works in its upcoming MMORPG, Warhammer Online.
As you have no doubt seen in recent podcasts and newsletters, we’ve added Keeps and Siege to Warhammer Online! Now it is time to offer an in-depth explanation as to how these systems work and how they are integral to the Realm v Realm™ (RvR) experience.

Integrating keeps into WAR builds on the foundation and success of Dark Age of Camelot™. In that game, keeps were the epitome of land ownership and helped drive the sense of pride in RvR. In WAR, keeps are once again a focal point of pride for your Realm and worth the battle defend or capture them

Man, this is going to be the best DAoC mod, evar.

    Quake Wars 1.5 Beta Patch
Feeling lucky? Splash Damage has released a beta patch for Quake Wars today. Here's the poop:
Good news: There's light at the end of the license tunnel! We've at last received the proper license files for both the Competition Mod and the 1.5 game update. With that in mind, we're now prepping them for release and hope to get them out as soon as possible (for real!).

Since we want to make sure that both releases are as solid as can be, we've decided to run public beta phases for them - this will allow us to iron out any remaining stability issues and also make sure that the backend infrastructure is working properly. Both of these are the most difficult things to test for and since we've had a few issues crop up in 1.4 that didn't surface during our testing, we feel that a public beta phase is in the best interest of the game and the players.

Read on for more information on the two upcoming Beta releases and for the preliminary 1.5 changelog.

    Thanks ATist.
    Lost: Via Domus Review
GameSpy takes some potshots at Lost: Via Domus in this review, giving the game a 2/5 score:

But that's classic "Lost," isn't it? What we can't immediately explain, we should feel free to write off as a wrinkle in space-time, a prophetic vision of (one of a million) possible futures, or, heaven forbid, a particularly vivid dream. One gets the feeling that the show's creators are trying to wash their hands of Via Domus, awkwardly placed as it is in the series' now-sprawling legendarium. But above and beyond that, fans should approach it as a lark; it's not very accomplished as a game.
Left 4 Dead Zombie Boss Impressions
PC.IGN got some trigger time with Left 4 Dead, Valve's upcoming zombie co-op shooter. What makes this preview different than the others? They were able to play as the zombies...
In the build we played, we couldn't select the specific kind of boss zombie we wanted. Instead, the game's "director," an AI that determines the flow of action on a map, makes that decision. Unlike playing as the human survivors, you're on a regular respawn cycle with the bosses. The timing is still being tweaked, but right now it's at about a minute or so, which felt a little long. The time waiting could have been filled with text or voice chat with zombie teammates to develop attack strategies, but we lacked a headset.

While we had a great time testing out all the boss' special abilities, to really be successful in stopping the survivors it would seem strategic planning and teamwork is required. This is mostly because three of the playable boss zombies, which happen to be the types cycled through most frequently, die extremely quickly, whereas the band of survivors can take quite a bit of punishment.

There's also a cool L4D zombie boss preview in last month's PC Gamer.
    Bungie Weekly Update
This week's Bungie Update is chock full of reader submitted questions about Halo 3 controller changes.
Were there any other control schemes that ended up on the cutting room floor?

JG: Oh yeah. The difficulty with making control schemes is that different buttons have physically different features. You can’t put the Primary Trigger on a button, for instance, because it doesn’t have the analog range necessary to make the Plasma Pistol work. You can’t put the camera controls on the d-pad because it doesn’t have a click function for zoom. That means we can’t just let people completely customize their controls, so we try to anticipate all the different options people might want. What if someone is a dedicated sniper and they want zoom on a trigger? What if they want to crouch a lot and need it on the d-pad? What if they do nothing but jumping tricks and they want Jump to replace the Primary Trigger? In the end most of these control schemes don’t offer enough of an improvement to be worth the effort.

AP: The location of PTT (Push-To-Talk), especially after the gates got opened a little bit with the late addition of bumper jumper, turned into a rather epic holy war inside the studio. After many long arguments and passioned pleas, we got totally sick of listening to Bob's [Glessner] hormonally tumultuous whining and added Walkie Talkie. That was the survivor of the last great control scheme battle, and many other warriors entered the ring.

Major League Eating: The Game to be a WiiWare Exclusive
    - 4 Comments
The press release speaks for itself:

Video game publisher Mastiff announced today that their upcoming title, Major League Eating: The Game, will makes its debut as an exclusive on WiiWare, Nintendo's new downloadable game service for the Wii console, which launches May 12 in North America. The game will make extensive use of the Wii Remote to simulate the fast and furious action of a professional eating competition.

"Watching Major League Eating is like watching poetry in motion" says Bill Swartz, Head Woof at Mastiff. "Professional gurgitators have the grace of ballerinas yet the brute strength, mental focus, and intestinal fortitude to push their bodies and minds as hard as athletes in any other extreme endurance sport. Victory is sweet and defeat can be well, really, really messy. It's an experience we're proud to help bring into the home."

The game features the world's greatest gurgitory athletes competing across a variety of foods and venues. Built much like a classic fighting game and deeper than a Chicago style deep-dish pizza, MLE: The Game requires players to master a smorgasbord of offensive and defensive weapons including bites, burps, belches, mustard gas and jalapeno flames while cramming and chewing food at a world-class pace. It's not for the faint of heart, the slow of reflex, or those with an overly strong aversion to a Technicolor reversal of fortune.

Major League Eating: The Game uses the Wii Remote to simulate a variety of eating techniques including the cram, toss, and 'typewriter.' Burp-offs and Hot Potato challenges during the contests keep the competition intense and eaters on their toes.

Major League Eating: The Game is for one or two players, offers online play and a leader board.

Major League Eating, the professional league which oversees all top eating events in the nation, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, counts among its members Takeru Kobayashi, the Japanese eating phenomenon, and American Joey Chestnut, current champion of the world.

    Tim Sweeney Talks Xbox 360
Epic prodigy Tim Sweeney is over at TeamXbox answering a bunch of Xbox 360 related questions about the Unreal Engine and Gears of War 2. Has Epic reached the limits of what the 360 can do?
In the past, you have commented about the fact that we now have multiple cores in a CPU, but the software has yet to catch up with the hardware; that the traditional programming tools were not designed with multithreading in mind. You also said you were doing some research on that front. Any update on your efforts?

Yeah, well, programming for multicore architectures is hard. If programmers had our way, we’d just program single-thread application forever, because it’s much easier. But it’s also clear that there’s an irreversible hardware trend towards multicore, because that’s the only way to deliver maximum power economically. You just can’t make ever higher gigahertz rates—at some point your CPU becomes a microwave and melts your computer. Multicore is here to stay.

What we’ve found in this generation—and here are some scary numbers—is that writing an engine system designed for multicores, that can scale to multiple threads efficiently, takes about double the efforts as single threaded. It takes double the design effort, implementation effort, lifetime support effort, debugging…all the costs metrics multiplied by a factor of two for multicores. That’s pretty expensive, but ends up being bearable.

Whereas, some of the other hardware trends are even worse than that, like programming for Cell, we found, had a [five-times] productivity divisor. It’s five times harder and that really starts to hit…you have to question whether it’s economically viable for mainstream developers to put real effort into it at that point. And then GPUs are trying to take a non-graphics algorithm and run it on the graphics processor currently. Given the limitations of those languages, we found that the multiplier there is 10x or more, which is well out of the realm of economic viability.

    X-Blades Announced
    Underdressed third-person hack-and-slash action:

SouthPeak Games has announced X-Blades, a dynamic third-person hack-and-slash action title for next-gen consoles and PC, due for release in late 2008. X-Blades sees players controlling an enchanting anime-style heroine who must battle through a host of locations using guns, blades, magic and a healthy dose of cinematic flair.

“The unique anime-style backdrop combined with high-octane, multi-discipline combat gameplay really pushes X-Blades into brand new territory,” said Melanie Mroz, CEO of SouthPeak Games. “The 3rd-person ‘hack-em-up’ genre needs a fresh perspective and X-Blades is poised to deliver it.”

X-Blades features a special combination of cinematic style, beautiful animation and relentless high-speed gameplay. Players assume the role of Ayumi, a stunningly seductive yet tenacious heroine who battles enemies with her pistol blades, acrobatic ability and magic spells. With full anime-style cut scenes, the story unfolds revealing demonic hordes and spectacular landscapes, all ripe for exploration and frenetic supernatural battling.

“We are big fans of anime and that was really our inspiration for X-Blades,” said James Seaman, Managing Director at Topware Interactive. “Our goal was to create stylistic characters and artwork and to mix that bombastic visual style with lightning fast action. The result is a killer title that gamers and animation fans won’t be able to put down.”

    SCi Cancels 14 Games
£81.4 million lost, 14 games cancelled, 25% of the workforce made redundant, operations moved to Canada - times are hard for SCi-Eidos:

To curtail further losses, Rogers said: "SCi is in need of immediate change. Following our business review over the last six weeks, we are initiating a clear action plan based on three fundamental strands of activity: a radical change in our structure to a studio-led business, a top to bottom programme of product improvement and efficiency and a considerable cost reduction plan.

"To get SCi on track we have to act rapidly and effect change quickly. We must allow the world-class people that we have within the Group to focus on strong, profitable titles which will create the value our shareholders deserve. I am confident our staff share this vision and excitement for the future, and determination to build a working environment where our innovation and creativity can be commercially realised."

The firm will now set about a 'fundamental change in business structure' which involves decentralising control of its development studios, creating a new label called Eidos PLAY which merges its casual and new media resources, and taking a more flexible and efficient approach to distribution.

Cutting corners on Deus Ex 3 will only hurt your profit margin in the long term. Do you hear me, Eidos?

    Battlestations: Pacific Officially Announced
    - 2 Comments
How screenshots are released before an announcement press release I do not know:

Eidos Interactive Ltd., one of the world’s leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, can today confirm that Battlestations: Pacific, the official sequel to 2007’s acclaimed Battlestations: Midway, will be released on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows.

Set in WWII, Battlestations: Pacific delivers intense, action-packed combat and strategic warfare on an extraordinary scale and features two distinctly different single player campaigns. As the Americans, the game picks up the story where Battlestations: Midway left off and allows players to fight their way from The Battle of Midway to Okinawa as they try to secure peace in the Pacific. As the Japanese however, players take control of the Imperial Japanese fleet and have the unique chance to fight at Pearl Harbor before attempting to change the course of history and take full control of the Pacific Ocean.

Battlestations: Pacific offers a unique blend of action and strategy, as players must plan their moves carefully on huge open-world arenas and then fight in the air, above sea and underwater as they take direct control of their units and storm into combat. Join forces with friends online or play solo against the computer controlled opponents in the all-new Skirmish mode or battle each other in one of the five new, innovative multiplayer modes.

“Battlestations: Pacific is even bigger, more authentic and innovative than ever before, taking the Battlestations franchise to the next level and allowing players to relive some of the most memorable battles in modern history, as well as gain an insight into what could have been, should Japan have gained the upper hand against the United States,” said Trevor Burrows, Brand Manager at Eidos. “We have been paying great attention to our loyal online community and fan base to ensure that Battlestations: Pacific delivers the most exciting, authentic and fun Battlestations experience yet!”

Battlestations: Pacific features a massive US and Japanese single player campaign with over 28 story missions, double the size of the previous Battlestations: Midway. The game also features 21 new units, including kamikaze and other WWII jets and units. Players can now experience for the first time a whole new level of depth of gameplay while taking direct control of the infamous Ohka and other Japanese air units that terrorised the Pacific Ocean during WW2.

For the first time, the game also includes the tactical landing of troops in battle. Launch your parachute squadrons with pin-point accuracy or ensure the safe passage of your landing craft and watch your battalions of troops capture key locations, man the defensive artillery and gain a strategic foothold to support your offensive efforts.

Battlestations: Pacific is set for release on Xbox 360 and Games For Windows.

Poll: Secure Gaming to Fight Piracy?
This weekend's VE poll asks, Is secure gaming the best way to fight piracy? By secure, you need a valid login to play on official servers, for both single and multiplayer games. Vote on your right!

A good example of a secure game without any monthly fees is Guild Wars. A poor one would be Hellgate London. All MMORPGs are secure, but they don't suffer as much from piracy, as most of its revenue is raked in by subscription fees (most MMOs you can download for free legally).

For more background on secure gaming check out this story.

Please post any feedback in the poll thread.

Results of last week's ballot can be seen in the archives.
