Top 10 Most Wanted 2008 Games - Page 1 of 2

January is starting to wind down so I figured now would be a good time to put our top-10 most wanted PC games list on record. Granted, not all of them are locks to be released this year, but I’ll slap in a little percentage for each title that reflects my confidence level for it to ship within its scheduled window. Keep in mind, this isn’t the end all, be all list of the century. I do feel comfortable enough to recommend these bad boys after either playing them, seeing the titles in person, or just read enough about them to convince me that they're worth banking on. Expansion packs weren’t included in case you're curious.

Will 2008 be a banner year for PC gaming? Read on! Then post your feedback here.

10. Alan Wake
Developer: Remedy
Publisher: Microsoft
ETA: Late December (5%)
Official website

Company Line: "Alan Wake" immerses players in an intense and expansive cinematic world that enables players to roam freely in hyper-realistic, dynamic and interactive environments. "Alan Wake" is mission-based with a deeply engaging and suspenseful storyline unveiling new twists and profound character revelations at every turn. Players will unravel the riveting plot through character interactions, unique problem-solving and intense combat against terrifying enemies. In this nightmarish world, Alan Wake must use a variety of weapons to survive, including his most powerful ally against the creatures of darkness -- light itself.

Bottom Line: Any game that requires a quad-core CPU automatically piques my interest. Add into the equation that Remedy is the company that developed the Max Payne series, and it’s hard to not become excited. Odds are, Alan Wake won’t see the light of day (no pun intended) this year, or it would be rated much higher.

9. Duke Nukem Forever
Developer: 3D Realms
Publisher: Take Two
ETA: December (10%)
Official website (sorta)

Company Line: Taking place in and around Las Vegas, Duke Nukem Forever is the latest game in the incredibly popular Duke Nukem series and will feature Duke's infamous off-the-wall wisecracks. Using Epic Game's Unreal engine, Duke Nukem Forever strongly push the limits of gaming and gameplay for the first-person action genre, establishing new standards in interactivity, variety and pure fun.

Bottom Line: I think it's safe to say that we all just want to play Duke Nukem Forever before we grow old and die. 3D Realms just released a new teaser trailer last month, so hopefully that means Duke might bust himself out of the old retirement home in 2008.

8. Empire Total War
Developer: Creative Assembly
Publisher: Sega
ETA: December (25%)
Official website

Company Line: Empire: Total War will see the debut of 3D naval combat within the Total War franchise. PC Gamers will be able to intuitively command vast fleets or single ships upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board taking control your men as they fight hand to hand on the decks.

Bottom Line: Dude. It's Total War with boats. Awesome.

7. Sins of a Solar Empire
Developer: Ironclad Games
Publisher: Stardock
ETA: February (95%)
Official website

Company Line: With formidable fleets of starships, players will explore and conquer nearby planets and distant solar systems by applying brute force, cunning strategy, elegant diplomacy, economic mastery, and researched technology. Battle hardened capital ships advance in level, improving their core offensive and defensive systems, and unlocking their unique abilities. From research facilities to weapons platforms, planetary structures built on land and in orbit add to their planet's strategic and economic value.

Bottom Line: Stunning graphics! 4X space gameplay! Real-time battles! More boats [in space]!

6. Spore
Developer: EA Sims
Publisher: EA Sims
ETA: Winter (25%)
Official website

Company Line: The next evolution in gaming is upon us. From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space.

Bottom Line: I'm as sick of Sims as the next guy, but you have to admit the game was pretty amazing before EA milked it to death with bi-monthly expansions packs. From what I gather, Spore mixes a lot of cool science stuff into a Civ-like sandbox, allowing players to create all sorts of wacky worlds and creature creations. So basically, it's Civ with whatever lifeforms you decide to research and develop. Right? Spore has evolved so much over the years that it's hard to keep up!
