Other Incidents Assessed:

Contact between the Western Bulldogs' Chris Grant and St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo from the fourth quarter of Friday's game was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Grant bumped Dal Santo and while a small amount of contact was high, the majority of contact was to the body. It was the panel's view:
1. the force was not excessive in the circumstances;
2. Dal Santo was actively involved in the play at the time;
3. Grant did not use an elbow as part of the bump;
4. Grant did not leave the ground during his bumping action.
In summary, the action was considered a fair bump and not a reportable offence.

Contact between Geelong's Steven King and Richmond's Jake King from the fourth quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Steven King had handballed the ball to a teammate and then held his right arm out in a front-on shepherding motion against the Richmond player. He did not swing his arm into his opponent. It was the view of the panel this was not a striking motion and therefore was not a reportable offence.

Contact between Geelong's Steven King and the goal umpire from the fourth quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Nathan Brown's kick towards the goal moves from right to left and the goal umpire moves with the line of the ball. The ball drops shorter than expected, leaving the umpire between the dropping ball and King, unable to move out of the way in time. King keeps his eyes on the ball at all times and takes the mark in the field of play, to prevent the opposition scoring a goal. While contact was made, this was clearly not a reportable offence as the goal umpire contributed to the contact.

Contact between Collingwood's Travis Cloke and Carlton's Jason Saddington from the third quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Cloke's right shoulder makes contact with Saddington's right shoulder before Cloke's right arm comes around, brushing Saddington's left shoulder and making contact with his neck region. The initial shoulder to shoulder contact exacerbates Cloke's arm moment and the action was deemed an attempted tackle, and not a strike. No further action was required.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions' Tim Notting and the Kangaroos' Scott McMahon from the third quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Notting goes low to contest the ball and contact is made to McMahon's left shoulder. There is not contact to McMahon's head and the force used to contact McMahon's shoulder is not excessive. No further action was required.

Contact between Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne and Adelaide's Chris Knights from the second quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Burgoyne's action was a push back with his arm and not a strike. No further action was required.

Contact between Melbourne's James McDonald and Sydney's Brett Kirk from the first quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. Due to the limited vision available, the Match Review Panel was unable to determine the level of force used by McDonald on Kirk. No further action could be taken.

Contact between Essendon's Dustin Fletcher and Hawthorn's Ben Dixon from the second quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. Fletcher disposes of the ball and raises his knee to protect himself from the oncoming Dixon. At this time, Grant Birchall is holding Fletcher in an attempt to tackle. It was the view of the Match Review Panel that Birchall prevented Fletcher from turning his body to protect himself, as would be the normal course of action. Fletcher's action was considered to be self-protection and no further action was required.

Contact between Hawthorn's Campbell Brown and Essendon's Matthew Lloyd from the fourth quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. Lloyd wrong-foots Brown in an attempt to run past him and Brown throws his arm and leg out as a reflex action. Brown's foot makes contact, resulting in Lloyd going to ground. The foot contact was deemed accidental with no further action required.

Round 17 update:

The AFL wishes to advise the Tribunal will not sit tonight after all players chose to accept the sanctions offered by the Match Review Panel from the weekend's round of matches.

Sanctions Accepted:

Kane Johnson, Richmond, has accepted a $2400 sanction for making contact with umpire Ray Chamberlain during the first quarter of the Round 17 match between Richmond and Sydney, played at the SCG on Saturday July 28, 2007.

Toby Thurstans, Port Adelaide, has accepted a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record for striking James McDonald, Melbourne, during the third quarter of the Round 17 match between Port Adelaide and Melbourne, played at AAMI Stadium on Sunday July 29, 2007.

Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report laid against Hawthorn's Jordan Lewis was assessed. Lewis was reported for striking the Kangaroos' Daniel Harris during Sunday's game at Aurora Stadium. After viewing the behind the goals footage, it was the view of the panel that Lewis' action was a push with an open hand to the upper chest and neck region, not a strike. No further action was taken.

The match day report laid against Melbourne's Michael Newton was assessed. Newton was reported for striking Port Adelaide's Peter Burgoyne during Sunday's game at AAMI Stadium. Newton's action was deemed to be a bump to the side and not a strike. No further action was taken.

Contact between West Coast's Brett Jones and the Western Bulldogs' Brad Johnson from the fourth quarter of Friday's game was reviewed. It was the view of the Panel that a West Coast player handballed to Jones, and the ball dropped short of him. Jones converges on the ball with his hands down at knee-height, in an attempt to gather it. The ball runs along the ground, under his outstretched arms. Jones realises the ball has gone past him and then sees Johnson, turning slightly to protect himself from the contact.

1. It was the view of the Panel that Jones did not have a realistic alternative to contest the ball, in that he was watching the ball with his hands down in an attempt to gather it.
2. Contact would have occurred even if he had taken the ball.
3. Further, it was also the view of the Panel that the contact was caused by circumstances outside the control of the player in that Johnson ducked at the last moment, which contributed to the head-high contact.
No further action taken.

Contact between Hawthorn's Travis Tuck and the Kangaroos' Scott McMahon from the first quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. It appears from the vision that contact was made to the inner thigh. The contact is of insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence and no further action was taken.

Contact between Essendon's Nathan Lovett-Murray and Adelaide's Nathan Van Berlo from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. Van Berlo was in possession of the ball and he rolls backward, trapping Lovett-Murray's right foot under him. Lovett-Murray moves his foot away, but in doing so, he falls and makes contact with his knee to the side of Van Berlo's face. It was considered accidental contact and therefore not a reportable offence.

Contact between Essendon's Mal Michael and Adelaide's Andrew McLeod from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. McLeod wrong-foots Michael, but the Essendon player still makes an attempt to tackle. McLeod sees the tackle coming and jumps off the ground, resulting in Michael tackling McLeod below the waist, lifting him slightly and the dumping him on his back. It was the view of the Match Review Panel that McLeod's action in jumping contributed to the unusual nature of the tackle. No further action was taken.

Contact between Melbourne's Nathan Brown and Port Adelaide's Troy Chaplin from the second quarter of  Sunday's game was reviewed. Due to the lack of video evidence available at this time, no further action could be taken.  This will be reviewed if any further video becomes available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 16 update:

The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has assessed the following incidents from the weekend's round of matches.

Charges Laid:

Adam Cooney, Western Bulldogs, has been charged with striking Cameron Ling, Geelong, during the third quarter of the Round 16 match between the Western Bulldogs and Geelong, played at Telstra Dome on Friday July 20, 2007.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-game sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

Justin Koschitzke, St Kilda, has been charged with striking Robert Campbell, Hawthorn, during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between St Kilda and Hawthorn, played at Telstra Dome on Saturday July 21, 2007.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-game sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-game sanction.

Nigel Lappin, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with making negligent contact with umpire Gary Fila during the second quarter of the Round 16 match between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton, played at the Gabba on Sunday July 22, 2007.

In summary, he can accept a $2400 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is a $3200 sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a $2400 sanction.

Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report laid against Melbourne's Simon Godfrey was assessed. Godfrey was reported for front-on contact against the Kangaroos' Scott McMahon during Sunday's game at Telstra Dome.  It was the view of the panel that Godfrey had made forceful contact with McMahon. However, it was deemed not to be a reportable offence as the contact was caused by circumstances outside the control of the player which could not be reasonably foreseen. This is one of the two scenarios when a forceful front-on bump to a player with his head down over the ball is not reportable. Please refer to page four of the 2007 AFL Tribunal booklet for these scenarios in full. The reasons of the Match Review Panel were that:

1. Godfrey is coming to the contest behind Brent Harvey, who he is pursuing, and Harvey blocked the Melbourne player's view of McMahon, as the Kangaroo player bent to contest the ball.
2. McMahon had his weight on his left foot and attempted to tap the ball to Harvey with his right hand. This action resulted in McMahon falling to his right and into the path of Godfrey.
3. Godfrey did not have the opportunity to alter his line, to avoid the contact.
As such, no further action was taken.

Contact between Collingwood's Heath Shaw and Essendon's Andrew Welsh from the second quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Due to the inconclusive nature of the video evidence, no further action could be taken.

Contact between Hawthorn's Trent Croad and St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said that Croad's action was a shrugging motion, rather than a strike, and the force used was also below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda's Justin Koschitzke and Hawthorn's Jordan Lewis from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Lewis was backing back as Koschitzke was moving foward to mark the ball. The St Kilda player dropped the mark and made contact with Lewis as he landed. The contact was deemed to be unavoidable in the circumstances and therefore not reportable.

Contact between the Kangaroos' Drew Petrie and Melbourne's Nathan Carroll from the third quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. The panel determined the level of force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence and no further action was required.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 15 Update:

The AFL wishes to advise Tribunal will not sit tonight after all players chose to accept the sanctions offered by the Match Review Panel from the weekend's round of matches.

Sanctions Accepted:

Aaron Davey, Melbourne, has accepted a two-game sanction for striking Troy Selwood, Brisbane Lions, during the first quarter of the Round 15 match between Melbourne and the Brisbane Lions, played at the Gabba on Saturday July 14, 2007.

Simon Black, Brisbane Lions, has accepted a reprimand and 78 points towards his future record for striking Simon Godfrey, Melbourne, during the second quarter of the Round 15 match between the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne, played at the Gabba on Saturday July 14, 2007.

Ryan Murphy, Fremantle, has accepted a one-game sanction for engaging in rough conduct against Corey Jones, the Kangaroos, during the third quarter of the Round 15 match between Fremantle and the Kangaroos, played at Subiaco on Sunday July 15, 2007.

Other Incidents Assessed:
The match day reports laid against Joel MacDonald, Brisbane Lions, and Colin Sylvia, Melbourne, were assessed. The pair were reported for wrestling each other during Saturday's game at the Gabba. The players engaged each other for a very short time, before falling to the ground. Once the players went to ground, they did not continue to grapple with each other. The contact was not of a sustained vigorous nature and it was the view of the panel that this did not constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Geelong's Joel Selwood and Collingwood's Dane Swan from the first quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that the impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence, but can always result in a free kick being paid. No further action was required.

Contact between Geelong's Cameron Ling and Collingwood's Dale Thomas from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said the impact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence but, too, can result in a free kick being paid for the action. No further action was taken.

Contact between West Coast's Brett Jones and Port Adelaide's Justin Westhoff from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Jones had his eyes on the ball and he did not swing his arm into Westhoff. Although his action was slightly late, it was deemed to be a legitimate attempt to spoil the ball and therefore not a reportable offence. No further action was required.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions' Jamie Charman and Melbourne's Brock McLean from the first quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Charman tackles McLean and the technique was not desirable, as it could result in head contact to the ground, which may see a report laid. In this instance, it was not deemed a reportable offence, and no further action taken, although a free kick can be paid in this circumstance.

Contact between Hawthorn's Simon Taylor and Richmond's Graham Polak from the third quarter of  Sunday's game was reviewed. The action was deemed to be a legitimate attempt to spoil, and not a striking action. Taylor had his eyes on the ball at all times during his contest for the ball, and no further action was required.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Round 14 Update:

The AFL wishes to advise the Tribunal will sit tonight at 5pm, Tuesday July 10, after Essendon's Mark McVeigh chose to contest the charge laid against him by the Match Review Panel from the weekend's round of matches. Please also find detailed below those charges accepted from the weekend's review of matches.

AFL Tribunal, 5pm, Tuesday July 10:

Mark McVeigh, Essendon, has been charged with striking Gary Ablett, Geelong, during the third quarter of the Round 14 match between Essendon and Geelong, played at Telstra Dome on Friday July 6, 2007.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing poor record of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 247.50 points and a two-match sanction.

Sanctions Accepted:

Dustin Fletcher, Essendon, has accepted a one-game sanction for striking Kane Tenace, Geelong during the second quarter of the Round 14 match between Essendon and Geelong, played at Telstra Dome on Friday July 6, 2007.

Daniel Kerr, West Coast, has accepted a one-game sanction for with striking Will Hamill, Brisbane Lions, during the third quarter of the Round 14 match between West Coast and the Brisbane Lions, played at Subiaco on Saturday July 7, 2007.

Other Incidents Assessed:
Contact between St Kilda's Justin Koschitzke and Collingwood's Josh Fraser from the third quarter of  Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said that the players were contesting a loose ball in the centre square and Fraser reached in for the ball. Koschitzke followed the original line of the ball and contacted Fraser. Contact was made to Fraser's shoulder and upper body region. It was deemed that Koschitzke had no alternative way to contest the ball and no further action was required.

Contact between the Brisbane Lions' Jamie Charman and West Coast's Andrew Embley from the first quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Charman had his eyes on the ball and attempted to spoil Embley's chest mark. The Brisbane player made contact with Embley's arm and incidental contact was made to his opponent's face. No further action was required.

Contact between Hawthorn's Luke Hodge and Adelaide's Michael Doughty from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said Hodge was tackled as he kicked the ball. In an attempt to break the grasp of Doughty, Hodge swung his arm to break contact. The Hawthorn player made contact to Doughty's arm and any further contact is inconclusive from the vision supplied. No further action was taken.

Contact between Carlton's Anthony Koutoufides and Melbourne's Paul Wheatley from the third quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel Koutoufides was tackled and lost possession of the ball. While he is being held by a Melbourne player, he simultaneously extends his arm and leg in an attempt to tackle Wheatley. The action was seen as a legitimate attempt to tackle in the circumstances and no further action was required.

Contact between Melbourne's James McDonald and Carlton's Kade Simpson from the fourth quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. McDonald was wrong-footed in his chasing / tackle attempt on the Carlton player. Due to being off balance, accidental contact was made with McDonald's foot. The action was seen as a legitimate attempt to tackle in the circumstances and no further action was required.

Round 13 Update:

The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has assessed the following incidents from the weekend's round of matches.

Tribunal, 5pm, Tuesday July 3

Tom Harley, Geelong, has been charged with making negligent contact with umpire Ray Chamberlain during the third quarter of the Round 13 match between Geelong and Sydney, played at Skilled Stadium on Saturday June 30, 2007.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is a $3200 sanction.

Andrew Welsh, Essendon, has been charged with bumping or making forceful contact from front-on against Brad Green, Melbourne, during the third quarter of the Round Thirteen match between Essendon and Melbourne, played at Telstra Dome on Friday June 29, 2007.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has a five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 93.75 points and a reprimand.

Matthew Lloyd, Essendon, has been charged with charging Nathan Carroll, Melbourne, at the three-quarter time siren of the Round 13 match between Essendon and Melbourne, played at Telstra Dome on Friday June 29, 2007.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has a five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction.

Sanctions Accepted:

Kayne Pettifer, Richmond, has accepted a reprimand and 60 points towards his future record for striking Leigh Fisher, St Kilda, during the first quarter of the Round 13 match between Richmond and St Kilda, played at Telstra Dome on Saturday June 30. 2007.

Shaun Burgoyne, Port Adelaide, has accepted a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record for bumping or making forceful contact from front-on against Troy Selwood, Brisbane Lions, during the third quarter of the Round Thirteen match between Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions, played at the Gabba on Saturday June 30, 2007.

Other Incidents Assessed:
Contact between Sydney's Leo Barry and Geelong's Cameron Ling from the second quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said that considerable contact in the bump was made to Ling's chest area, with some contact to the Geelong player's chin. It was deemed that the force of the bump was not excessive in the situation while the player being bumped (Ling) was actively involved in the play. Further, Barry did not run a long distance to make contact with his opponent and Ling was not in a vulnerable position. Barry did not leave the ground or raise his elbow in the bumping action and, when considering all these factors, it was deemed not to be a reportable offence and no further action was required.

Contact between Geelong's Mark Blake and Sydney's Adam Goodes from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Blake had his eyes on the ball until he realised he was not in a position to spoil the marking contest. At that stage, the Geelong player turned his body and put his arms up in a bid to lessen the impact. His action was not considered to be a charge and no further action was required.

Contact between Port Adelaide's Warren Tredrea and the Brisbane Lions' Daniel Merrett from the third quarter of Saturday's match was reviewed. The panel said that Tredrea swung his arm into Merrett, with an open hand, and contact was made to Merrett's arms. The action was not deemed reportable and no further action was required.

Contact between Collingwood's Dale Thomas and Hawthorn's Brad Sewell from the second quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Thomas dived at Sewell in an attempt to tackle him. Although the Collingwood player's action resulted in Sewell going to ground, it was deemed a legitimate attempt to tackle, rather than a trip. No further action was required.

Contact between Hawthorn's Campbell Brown and Collingwood's Dane Swan from the fourth quarter of Sunday's game was reviewed. Due to the inconclusive nature of the video evidence, no further action could be taken.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the view of the panel that Chick shepherded Blake. As the West Coast player completed his shepherd, Blake raised his arm and made slight contact to the back of Chick's head. The panel assessed the match day report laid against St Kilda's Stephen Milne, who was reported for engaging in rough conduct against West Coast's Daniel Kerr during Sunday's game at Subiaco. The panel said that although contact was made high, the action was deemed as an attempt to tackle as Milne did not swing his arm into Kerr. It was viewed as a high tackle only and no further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda's Steven Baker and West Coast's Brent Staker from the second quarter of Sunday's match was reviewed. No vision was available and no further action was taken.

It was the view of the panel that McMahon did not sling or drive Carr into the ground. Although it was unfortunate Carr’s head hit he ground the action was deemed to be a fair tackle and no further action required.
