USS GEORGIA (SSGN  729)

CO's Biography

Commander Tammen graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

After completing nuclear power school and the Submarine Officer Basic Course, his first submarine assignment was on board USS PLUNGER (SSN 595) where he served as the Damage Control Assistant, Main Propulsion Assistant, Chemistry and Radiological Controls Assistant and the Combat Systems Officer until May 1989.  During his tour, PLUNGER completed two Western Pacific Deployments, two independent operations in the Northern Pacific and was awarded the Submarine Squadron THREE Battle Efficiency "E",  the Navy Unit Commendation and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Commander Tammen's next assignment was to the staff of Commander, Submarine Group FIVE as the Officer in Charge of the Combat Systems Training Team.

In February 1992, Commander Tammen was assigned as Engineer Officer in USS NEVADA (SSBN 733), serving until May 1995.  During this tour, he completed six strategic deterrent patrols.  Commander Tammen was next assigned to the staff of Commander, Submarine Squadron SEVENTEEN as the Material Officer until June 1997.

In October 1997, Commander Tammen reported as Executive Officer in USS PROVIDENCE (SSN 719).  During this tour, the ship completed a deployment to the Arabian Gulf in support of the USS JOHN C. STENNIS Battle group and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation.

From September of 1999 until June 2001, Commander Tammen served as the Force Nuclear Power Officer for the Atlantic Submarine Force.

Commander Tammen is entitled to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
