Horror Director Bousman Knows His Tomatometer, Still Not Discouraged [ Media Mentions ]
by Jen Yamato

CURRENT RATINGS:
(No Rating) Celeb: Darren Lynn Bousman
(No Rating) Movie: Saw III (2006)

Over at 411mania.com, "Saw" helmer Darren Lynn Bousman says he reads RT, knows his latest flick's Tomatometer (29 percent for "Saw III") but, knowing that most (if not all) modern horror flicks get panned by critics, he's not too fazed.

Bousman, from 411mania.com: "As a filmmaker, I'm on Rotten Tomatoes everyday seeing what the film is getting rated. I think it's at twenty-nine percent right now, which is below failing. It's funny because if you look up some of my favorite horror films recently, they are all failing."

"It's funny, all of the things that the critics hate about the movie are things I was setting out to do as a director. I take it as a compliment. They said it's vile, disgusting, horrific, and terrifying. They would then give it a thumbs down. I think it's great. It's what a horror film is."

Whether or not you liked the "Saw" movies, Bousman does make a few points regarding the way the horror genre is treated by critics. (Read the whole piece for his citation of Bill O'Reilly's "review.")

Michel Gondry, Will Shortz Share the RT Golden Tomato Love [ Media Mentions , The Office ]
by Jen Yamato

MOOD: Eek!

Jen here. I just got back from an exhilarating trip to NYC (first time ever!) to meet with two of our Golden Tomato winners, both of whom are responsible for some of my favorite things in the world: crossword puzzles and super-cool dreamy artsy handcrafty cinema!

First up was our meeting with Will Shortz -- yes, fellow nerds, THE Will Shortz, editor and puzzler extraordinaire of the painstakingly addictive NY Times crossword puzzle. If you haven't seen "Wordplay," our GTA winner for best documentary, and you're a nut for Across and Down mind-bending fill-in-the-blanks-if-you-can crosswords, go rent it now! Seven letter word for Will Shortz? Awesome!

The next day we (myself, our fantastic photog Kevin, and my filmmaking buddy Geoff) paid Michel Gondry a visit in his Soho office, where he obliged us by posing for fabulously wacky photos with the esteemed prize of merit, our 20-lb. Golden Tomato trophy (for best romance, "The Science of Sleep"). If you're a Gondry fan and haven't seen "Science" yet -- well, what kind of Gondry fan are you??

Meanwhile, Tim chatted with Comedy Golden Tomato winner Larry Charles (director of "Borat"), Senh met "Wordplay" filmmakers Patrick Creadon and Christine O'Malley (and their three-legged pup), and plenty of other GTA winners weighed in on winning the coolest critical award of the year.

There's nothing like a corporate-sponsored holiday party to get you in the mood for X-mas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/etc....especially one with an open bar! (Thank you, IGN!) As per usual at these things, RTers were invited but not photographed by the "official" IGN photog, but whatever. That's what Jen's camera is for! Feast your eyes on our holiday pics and pretend you were there raising a glass with us...it's our way of saying thanks for using Rotten Tomatoes!

by Jen Yamato

MOOD: Fresh

Fun times at the RT office today! An afternoon group outing to see "Casino Royale" (96% on the Tomatometer, good lord!)...there's really nothing like herding 12 programmers, editors, interns, bosses, etc. over to the local multiplex for some midday kiss kiss, bang bang!

Craig. Daniel Craig.

I knew I should have brought the shakers and gin and vermouth and lemon twists to work today. Thanks to the one RTer who got the memo and wore his James Bond tux!
