Irate Studio, Anna Nicole Smith, Basketball League, and King Kong...
[
The Office ]
by Senh Duong
I came to work today, and a studio was steaming mad over an article we put up. As usual, we asked them what issue(s) they have with the article. Is the information wrong? If so, we'll correct it. Turns out their main problem is with the tone and opinion. They threatened to pull advertising on our site if we don't take it down. I like to keep the separation between ad sales and editorial, so the article stays. There's a reason for separation of Church and State. We actually run into these problems every so often, and it always has to be handled delicately. It's a tricky relation between movie sites and the studios. They pay some of the bills by advertising on our site. We dish out info and publicize (good or bad) their products.
And then Anna Nicole Smith died. Holy cow. What a rollercoaster her life was in the past several years. Sad. Very sad. But it's great for the media - every media site on the web probably got a significant traffic boost because of her death. Some of them couldn't handle the immense traffic boost. Her official website AnnaNicole.com is still out. The New York Post blogs are also not loading. AskMen.com and us were out of commission for a little bit. On our site, we get a traffic boost whenever a celebrity dies. It's physics - when celebrities pass away, their energy dissipates into entertainment websites.
Half of the RT crew (Wanshun, Phu, Jongyu, Tim, our marketing intern Henry, and I) are in a basketball league. We play every Wednesday against teams from other companies. Yesterday, we lost a close one. We played three games, and won just one. All three were decided by a couple points. In the words of The Detroit Piston's Rasheed Wallace, "Everyone played hard."
To cap a busy day, a group of us (Tim, Jen, Wanshun, Jongyu, and I) will go and watch King Kong vs. Godzilla, which is 38% on the Tomatometer, in one of those theaters where they serve you pizza and beer. Rotten movies always go well with beer.
