How To Get Your Money From Sony

Unless you've been living underneath a rock recently, then you know about Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Jack Tretton and his recent comments in EGM's February issue. The interview, conducted in January, isn't anything to write home about, save for one bold remark Tretton made:

If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it.

Silly? Yes. Idiotic? Yes.

Of course, the Internet has decided to take Jack up on his offer. And why not? He's offering double the market price for a PS3. However, from what I've read, few people seem to know the right way to go about getting their money. So I've decided to do IGN a favor and give out these helpful hints on how you, the gamer, can make a killing off one person's stupid comments:

- Some people have been going to stores, posting that they found some PS3s on the shelves, and then said they bought one for proof. Well, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of Tretton's challenge if you buy the PS3? That's just incredibly stupid.

- What you should be doing, though, is collecting evidence that PS3s are sitting on the shelves. The Penny Arcade dudes have got it right:

Grab your camera and hop on over to your local Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger/Ralph's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, K-Mart, Meijer, Toys 'R' Us, EB Games, Gamestop, independent game store, or anywhere else that might have a game. Take pictures of the consoles sitting on the shelves, but ask if it's okay first so that you don't get into trouble with management. While The Minus World encourages you to go make yourselves filthy rich off Jack Tretton, we also encourage you to do so without breaking the rules. tongue

- Better yet, to prove five minutes has passed, use a video camera instead. Simply sit it in front of a PS3s on a shelf, wait five minutes, and you're all set. Repeat as necessary to increase your profit. When you feel like you have enough, burn it to a DVD so Jack can watch it.

- Now that you have sufficient evidence to claim your money, you will need to write a letter that will be your claim to your fair share of the money. Luckily, I've written a form letter below to help you out. Adjust as you feel is necessary:

In a recent interview with EGM magazine, you made the following statement:

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it."

I would like to inform you that locally, I have found (insert number here) of PS3 consoles sitting on the shelves for more than five minutes. Enclosed is supporting evidence.

According to your statement, I am owed (insert correct monetary value here). Please send it in the form of a check to the address listed below:

- Now that you've gathered your evidence and written a letter, send it to the following address:

- Wait 4-6 weeks for your check, then cash it and enjoy. happy
