Japan-Only Games Coming to the Virtual Console?

Wired's Chris Kohler recently managed to score an interview with Nintendo senior VP George Harrison with some questions on the Virtual Console. Everything was going pretty smooth, until Harrison dropped this potential bomb:

George Harrison, Nintendo Senior VP posted:
We are aware that there are some very successful Japanese franchises that have a small following in the US, and that they could never be reached by putting these products out at retail. We're open to games released in Japan if we can get them translated properly.

For right now, Harrison added, Nintendo of America busy enough working through the major games that have already been released in the US that they aren't really focusing on this, but it's nice to know that they are seriously considering bringing some Japan-only games to North America. I've always felt that for the Virtual Console to be a success, this is one of things Nintendo must do to generate buzz. Could you imagine how excited North American Wii owners might get for some of the earlier Fire Emblem or Nintendo Wars games, or perhaps Sin and Punishment or Doshin the Giant finally reaching out shores?

-----------

Would you support Japan-only games hitting the VC? If so, which ones do you want to see make the jump and why?

Valentine's Day... Pika Gets Some Virtual Console Love?

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday, though I didn't have a Valentine. *sigh* Is it just me, or is it hard for gamers to find Valentines?

If it's been hard for you, scroll down to find your own Valentine...

...cards. Enjoy. wink

Speaking of love... I once posted the 5 games I'd love to see on the Virtual Console. Some, like Sin and Punshiment and Star Fox 2, may have been nothing more than just dreams, but today, I got a bit of love from Nintendo and Konami. Why? Because the Goemon series has been rated in Australia for VC release, which can only mean that soon, the ESRB will be taking a look at it (hopefully) and will be able for purchase. As a series I always felt was under-appreciated in North America, I've longed for a day to replay the games from the series or the day I got a new Goemon game. At least one of those might be coming true in the future. happy

------

How was your Valentine's Day? And do you share my love for Goemon?

SURPRISE! New Wii Channel Sneaks Up On Us All!

So we've been wondering what the next Wii Channel will be? Nintendo went and pulled a fast one on us, by not even mentioning a new one was being released.

I first read about this on Kotaku and was taken aback by their most recent headline, which proclaimed that the new Wii Channel, the Everybody Votes Channel, is available now for download.

Images courtesy GoNintendo

It appears to be some form of channel that lets you vote on questions, using your Mii as an avatar. I don't know what to think of it yet, but I can already think of a few applications for it. I expect that Nintendo might use this to get feedback on games/ideas/etc. in the future, but we'll have to see. There is also a Suggest a Question option, too.

You also have to perform a Wii system update to access it, so make sure you do that first.

UPDATE: All right, I've got it downloaded and running. The system update was to add in the region feature to your Wii. You'll need to set it and confirm it after you start up the Everybody Votes Channel. Then you'll need to register a Mii (you can add up to 10) and you can begin voting.

To vote, select a poll, then using A and B, drag your Mii over to the response you want to pick. It's that easy. You can also predict which answer you think will win.

There are four circular buttons: Active Polls, Worldwide Polls, Recent Results, and Poll History. All pretty self-explanatory.

Across the top are 5 more options: Register New Voter, Voter Data, Suggest A Question, Options, and Wii Menu. Under Options you have Confirm polling region, Erase all data, and Change question language. For Suggest a Question, you have to type a question and two answers to pick from.

Voter Data offers three pages of info on each voter. The first contains a Vote Count, Prediction Record and Predicition Accuracy. The second tells you how tuned in you are, and the third shows your distance from the popular opinion. Awesome.

I'll update this entry as I gather more info.

Bad Lucasarts, Bad! *smacks with a newspaper*

Ever since the Wiimote was first introduced, there has been a frothing demand by Wii owners for a Star Wars game on their console. They imagined a world of lightsaber fights and force powers, all at their fingertips with Wiimote and nunchaku controls. It was a happy world indeed.

Well, the new Game Informer cover was released today, and bad news, Wii fans: The PS3 and 360 are getting a new Star Wars game and you're not. Turns out it's something to do with graphical power and Lucasarts being stupid.

A thread on this very topic appeared on the Wii General Board, but it has since turned into an argument over whether Knights of the Old Republic was good or sucked.

The new game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, was seen as a demo at the past E3, and footage from that demo even made it into a fan-made video showing how it'd work on the Wii. It's a pretty god video and got a lot of people talking, but alas, it's not coming true.

Now you might be expecting that I'd be upset this wasn't headed to the Wii. Yes, I'm a bit miffed at that, but I'm in fact more upset with what Lucasarts has done storyline-wise. As a Star Wars fan from a young age, I know my history well and I'm not one bit happy with how this game fits into the Star Wars universe. Apparently you will be able to play as "Darth Vader's secret apprentice", which not only fucks around with canon, but is about as original as all the other 14-year-olds on Fanfiction who have written stories about the same thing. Laaaaame. sleep

Judging by the cover, this looks to be set in the original trilogy era, which also makes me a bit unhappy, as it completely ruins a big reason why Vader wanted Luke to join him in the first place. Then again, I should've expected this, because if all the special edition DVDs we've seen are any indication, George Lucas likes to mess around with his story.

Yes, you should expect Five Ways To Change Star Wars: The Force Unleashed in the future, but for now, I can think of two good things that would've made this game awesome:

1.) Set it in the only time period we haven't explored yet - the gap between Episode III and Episode IV, when Vader begins his extermination of the Jedi with the help of Imperial forces. If you're going to do a "hunt down and kill the remaining Jedi angle", why not go the route that's been established already?

2.) For the love of God, let us play as Darth Vader. Lets us force choke the crap out of people and slash them to bits as the helmeted bad-ass. Lucasarts is missing out on a huge opportunity here to make a game that would easily sell millions if done properly. Playing as Darth Vader is a Star Wars fan's dream, not some guy you just made up for a video game.

Let's hope Lucasarts gets their act together, or I'm gonna be super-mad. And you don't want to see me when I'm super-mad, trust me.

------

Did Lucasarts drop the ball here by not releasing a version for the Wii? Do you think the story is as lame as I feel it is? And will Lucasarts ever come out with a game that lets you play the whole way through as Darth Vader?

And no, Episode III the game doesn't count. We're talking masked Vader here.

Party Time

For those of you who have checked my profile today, you might have noticed something new. In case you didn't (and hell, I know you didn't), then I'll just tell you I turned 21 today. My parents and sister came on down from Michigan (my other sister called me later because she lives about 4 hours away and can't make it down here often), bringing with them cake and presents:

Here's what I got:

- Some money
- Transformers: The Movie (20th Anniversary Special Edition)
- Okami (Which I plan to play through again tongue )
- A few books

We ended up going to an antique mall because I needed to find something to do that would keep them all busy. There wasn't a whole lot there, but I did score a cool Mario bank that was made during the NES era. Pretty good deal for $6. Afterwards, we went out to Don Pablo's for dinner, but I didn't get an alcoholic beverage. I figure since I had done enough drinking last night, I didn't need to do it today. wink

All in all, today was a pretty good birthday and I had fun. Hopefully I'll be able to have a party for all my friends on campus, because I haven't gotten a chance to do that yet.

Also, I've updated my design and header. Congrats to FIREWATEREARTH-N-AIR for designing the winning entry. happy Yeah, there were only two entries, but his won. However, twisted_devil_mind's entry was also good enough that I'm considering using it in the future. Hopefully the new color scheme doesn't look too bad. tongue

How To Get Your Money From Sony

Unless you've been living underneath a rock recently, then you know about Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Jack Tretton and his recent comments in EGM's February issue. The interview, conducted in January, isn't anything to write home about, save for one bold remark Tretton made:

Jack Tretton posted:
If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it.

Silly? Yes. Idiotic? Yes.

Of course, the Internet has decided to take Jack up on his offer. And why not? He's offering double the market price for a PS3. However, from what I've read, few people seem to know the right way to go about getting their money. So I've decided to do IGN a favor and give out these helpful hints on how you, the gamer, can make a killing off one person's stupid comments:

- Some people have been going to stores, posting that they found some PS3s on the shelves, and then said they bought one for proof. Well, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of Tretton's challenge if you buy the PS3? That's just incredibly stupid.

- What you should be doing, though, is collecting evidence that PS3s are sitting on the shelves. The Penny Arcade dudes have got it right:

Grab your camera and hop on over to your local Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger/Ralph's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, K-Mart, Meijer, Toys 'R' Us, EB Games, Gamestop, independent game store, or anywhere else that might have a game. Take pictures of the consoles sitting on the shelves, but ask if it's okay first so that you don't get into trouble with management. While The Minus World encourages you to go make yourselves filthy rich off Jack Tretton, we also encourage you to do so without breaking the rules. tongue

- Better yet, to prove five minutes has passed, use a video camera instead. Simply sit it in front of a PS3s on a shelf, wait five minutes, and you're all set. Repeat as necessary to increase your profit. When you feel like you have enough, burn it to a DVD so Jack can watch it.

- Now that you have sufficient evidence to claim your money, you will need to write a letter that will be your claim to your fair share of the money. Luckily, I've written a form letter below to help you out. Adjust as you feel is necessary:

----

Dear Mr. Tretton,

In a recent interview with EGM magazine, you made the following statement:

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it."

I would like to inform you that locally, I have found (insert number here) of PS3 consoles sitting on the shelves for more than five minutes. Enclosed is supporting evidence.

According to your statement, I am owed (insert correct monetary value here). Please send it in the form of a check to the address listed below:

(your address here)

Sincerely,
(Your Name Here)

- Now that you've gathered your evidence and written a letter, send it to the following address:

Jack Tretton
c/o Sony Computer Entertainment America
PO Box 5888
San Mateo, CA 94402-0888

- Wait 4-6 weeks for your check, then cash it and enjoy. happy

l33tsp33k 1nf1ltr4t35 da Cla55r00m

TTYL. WTF. LOL. GTFO. O rly. All of them a part of the Internet's lingo, something we use every day. However, it is spreading far beyond the Internet, thanks to the growing popularity of Internet messaging. I've got my own opinion on that, but that's a whole other blog entry that I'll save for later.

Turns out l33tspeak, though, is infiltrating classrooms all over the nation. It's invading papers in public and private schools alike, which should not be a surprise to anyone. I mean, some facets of the language, like LOL and WTF, have become so commonplace that they've become a part of our spoken language. So I wasn't surprised to see this story up on CNN, though I would have thought it would be up there much sooner.

The end of the short article is most puzzling, and makes me wonder how much work the reporter for CNN did:

CNN posted:
Some educators, like David Warlick, 54, of Raleigh, North Carolina, see the young burgeoning band of instant messengers as a phenomenon that should be celebrated. Teachers should credit their students with inventing a new language ideal for communicating in a high-tech world, said Warlick, who has authored three books on technology in the classroom.

Celebrate the stupidity of l33tspeak? I don't think so. tongue

CNN posted:
And most avoid those pitfalls once they enter college, said Larry Beason, director of freshman composition at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

"Some of the same kids that I teach now were probably guilty of techno spellings in high school," Beason said. "But most students realize that they need to put their adolescent spellings behind them by the time they get to college."

Of course, the article fails to mention what I have already learned: even at the college level, it's still a problem. I remember in my journalism reporting class reading articles with sentences like "He went 2 the courthouse." In a 200-level journalism class. The idea that this goes away in college is total bull, because I have seen plenty of it in the three years I've been in Bowling Green. Thankfully, it hasn't been too prevalent and I'm seeing less and less of it as time passes.

------------

Has l33tspeak become a problem? Should it be celebrated, or is it something that should remain on the Internet alone?

Square Working On A MMO for 360/Vista. Sony = Teh Troubled?

Yes, you read that right. Don't believe me? Read on. tongue

Hiromichi Tanaka (Senior VP of Software Dev at Square) recently gave an interview to UK based site Pro-G. During the interview he let slip this bombshell.

"I'm still working on XI as it's on-going" Tanaka told Pro-G. "We are also working on a next-generation MMORPG for 360 and Vista but PS3 is a possibility."

Yes, the PS3 is only a possibility. Is this the same Square that was so very loyal to Sony just a few years back? The answer, obviously, is no.

On top of this announcement, there's been Square's shifting of Dragon Quest away from the PS3 to the mighty, Japan-conquering DS. The first release of Final Fantasy III also hit the DS.

Yes, Final Fantasy XIII is in the works for the PS3, and XII just came out for the PS2, but these projects were, I assume, set in stone long before Sony started having such problems pushing the PS3. Even before then, it seemed like Square was branching out to other consoles and trying to repair their damaged relationship with Nintendo.

I think it's somewhat troubling news for Sony, but not a big bad sword through the heart of the Japanese beast. Not necessarily bad news, because it's not Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy defection to the 360, but it must make Sony think that they are no longer the sole focus, or perhaps even the main focus on Square-Enix's work. Plus, need I mind you that the 360 is still dead last in Japan?

We'll have to see what Square's project is to see how this will affect Sony. But after all of the defections from Sony's console we've seen so far, I'd be checking with Square to make sure Final Fantasy XIV will be on their console.

-----

Is this announcement enough for Sony to be worried? Or does it just mean the 360 is getting a cool game and Sony has nothing to worry about?

Five Ways to Change: The PS3's Fate

(Just a reminder: Saturday is the last day to send in your entires for the The Minus World Header Design Challenge. I've got two entries already and I'm hoping for more, so please keep them coming! happy )

So, many of you might remember that meghan-ign recently had a contest in her blog, with the top prize being a copy of Just Cause for the PS2. All you had to do to enter was answer her question:

meghan-ign posted:
Question: If you were president of Sony, how would you increase sales of PS3 consoles in 2007 without lowering the price? What would you do? Why?

Well, turns out that my entry won, and in celebration, I've decided to re-post my winning entry as the newest edition of Five Ways to Change. However, it's not just a port, as I only had four reasons listed. So I've added a fifth reason, as well as gone back and added a bit more to some of my suggestions.

Here's how Sony can avoid the current fate its headed for with the PS3:

1.) Re-set the advertising campaign.

I don't think anyone will disagree that PS3 advertising so far has been a huge failure because they haven't really shown us anything about the console, other than it appears to be self-sentient alien technology.

It's not only laughable, but just plain dumb, and this needs to go. No more exploding Rubik's Cubes. No more crying babies. No more floating PS3s.

Whoever is in charge of Sony should be fired, as should everyone else who took part in advertising the PS3 and PSP because they obviously failed Sony on both regards.

Sony needs to look at what Microsoft and Nintendo are doing. They're not only advertising games for the PS3, but they are showing people playing them or incorporating gaming into them in some way that makes it look fun. The PS3 has failed in doing this, but it's what should be done. Show people playing with the SIXAXIS, having a fun time, and at the same time show off the pretty graphics. That's a good start.

The best PS3 commercial so far has been one like that, which was the ad for Resistance: Fall of Man. Can't we get some more things like that, but perhaps with showing some people playing the game?

It's way too late now, but I would have gotten ad space during the Super Bowl to promote the PS3. Do this next year, and grab spots during other major sporting events to ensure great promotion.Heck, they're already doing it with the UEFA Champions League, and the PS3 has not even hit Europe yet. Judging from how poor a lot of the Super Bowl ads were this year, an awesome Sony commercial would have done a lot of good.

Sony also needs to get ads into magazines, newspapers, on billboards and websites... anywhere they can. They also need third-parties to start promoting their games coming out for the PS3, which both Microsoft and Nintendo have been able to do with their third-party releases.

If you're going to use the Play B3yond tag-line, them do cool stuff like Nintendo is doing. Make memorable commercials where the player gets dropped into a game and takes part of it, if you want. Just make the PS3 look fun, not scary.

2.) Shake things up in management and bring in people with charisma, a love of gaming and talent.

Look at Nintendo. When you listen to Satoru Iwata or Reggie speak, you really believe that games are their passion and they want to make things fun for you. Look at Microsoft. When I see Peter Moore on stage, I feel that he has a love of gaming and wants to put something out there that kicks ass. I mean, come on, the guy had tattoos put on his arms for when he announced Halo 2 and GTA IV, for Pete's sake (hehe, kinda witty).

But when I look at Sony... I don't see a single person like that. Instead, I get the impression that Sony is a bunch of stuck-up execs who only know how to put down other systems and overhype theirs. And no, Kaz's "Riiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!" does not count as charisma.

Sony desperately needs to bring in someone with passion, with excitement, and a lot of the "dead weight" needs to get tossed out. Namely, I think it's time for Sir Howard Stringer and Jack Tretton to step aside and let others fill in their places. Tretton keeps making Sony looks like even bigger fools than Kutaragi ever did, and I was never to big on Stringer in the first place. The real question is... who would replace them? I honestly don't have any idea, but Sony needs to find a more passionate group of people for their gaming branch. If not, they risk alienating the gamer with their "holier than thou" attitude.

3.) Lock up exclusives at any cost.

Sony's biggest problem games-wise is that they're losing major titles left and right to other consoles, namely Dragon Quest and Grand Theft Auto. Sure, they just got Saint's Row, but unless they fix all the bugs in that game, I'm not going to want to buy it.

With the ever-present rumor that Metal Gear Solid 4 is headed to other consoles, too, Sony has a problem upon their hands. This might mean dropping some money into developers' hands to make sure big name franchises like Resident Evil, Soul Calibur, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto, but without third-party exclusives, Sony is dead in the water. Why pay for a game on a $600 console when you can get it for a console that's half that price?

Or heck, Sony could also use the PlayStation Network to offer things like episodic content. Could you imagine if Sony stole Sam and Max from Gametap and offered then on their console at a reasonable price? That would be huge for them.

4.) Make the experience of the PS3 worth a $600 value

Right now, the PS3 is not even close to worth $600 in value. You basically get a console and controller, with a whole lot of promises but not a lot of bang for your buck out of the box. Sony needs to change this to entice customers.

Pack in the HD cables and a game that might not sell well otherwise, but isn't total crap. The fact that the $600 value gets you just a console and a controller is a huge turnoff for a lot of people, especially when Nintendo offers a game with the Wii and the Platinum Xbox 360 is an incredibly generous deal.

Second, undercut Microsoft and Nintendo when it comes to releasing classic games. Charge $3-5 for old PS1 games and $2-4 for classic games from the arcade. Right now, the Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade can't compete with those prices, and if Sony could get some big-name titles on there like Final Fantasy VII, it could be a huge cash-cow.

Third, continue to push the e-Di games. This is the one thing I think Sony is doing right at the moment, and I would love them see to continue this. Calling All Cars looks sweet... but I'm not buying a $600 console just for one game.

Fourth, work towards making Blu-ray a viable format, then make it the dominant one. The PS2 did so well because it was a cheap way to get into DVDs, and if Blu-ray wins out, the PS3 will be the cheap way to get into that. Sony must get together with the major studios and make sure that Blu-ray beats HD-DVD out, so that they not only make money off the format, but make money off a ton of future PS3 sales.

Last, Sony needs to make their online experience with the Playstation Network on par with Xbox Live's. Right now, Microsoft sits alone on top of the mountain, but Sony has the chance to get up there if they want to. They must ensure that they do not drop the ball like Nintendo is doing and that Xbox Live is an equal, not a superior.

5.) Incorporate SIXAXIS controls in a more creative, better planned manner

Sony's last major hurdle is the proper implementation of the SIXAXIS controller and the technology incorporated within it. With no rumble this time around, Sony must make use of the SIXAXIS in a creative manner or risk getting destroyed by the technologically-superior Wiimote. So far, I've been extremely disappointed with how the tilt-functioning on the PS3 has been implemented. Here's a break down of some of the games and their controls:

- Madden 07: "By doing a few small, quick movements with the controller, you're able to execute certain moves before the snap and after the snap. If you're on offense, you can do a hard count as the QB and try to get defenders to jump offsides, or use the controller movement to execute Lead Blocker Control, one of our new running game features this year. If you're on defensive, you can use the movement to jump the snap on a blitz to get to the QB quickly, or use it to lay a big hit on a ball carrier."

Only the hard count thing seems to really be interesting to me. Using the tilt-functioning for Lead Blocker Control doesn't seem as effective, and being able to jump the snap or lay out a ball carrier was already good enough with the second analog stick. I don't see how suddenly jolting your controller makes it better.

- NBA 07: Using the tilt-function allows you to juke and execute other quick one-on-one moves, all of which were mapped to the analog stick before. Much like with Madden 07, I'll take the old school way over this new school one.

- NHL 2K7: Crease-control uses the SIXAXIS pretty well to let you stop pucks coming your way, but using it to check? That leaves a lot to be desired. 2K Games really needs to improve this function for 2K8, because there's a lot of promise here. The controls do feel tacked on here, but Sony pretty much sprung this on everyone, so I'm not surprised the controls aren't up to quality.

- Virtua Tennis 3: Here you go...

Okay, not bad. Pretty reasonable, but...

That just looks God awful. I don't think I need to explain why.

- Tony Hawk's Project 8: Really, not too bad. The controls are simple for jumping and tilting, and so far are perhaps the best controls on the SIXAXIS controller.

Video comparison with the Wiimote

My only beef is that you have to use such big movements with the SIXAXIS that it might distract you from having more direct control of your character. It really feels like a Tony Hawk tech demo more than a game that got a lot of time and thought spent into it.

Overall, I don't feel that SIXAXIS has been implemented to the same level that the Wiimote controls have. Yes, I know the Wiimote is far more advanced, but I'd like to be able to do more than just use it like a steering wheel or to fly a plane. As I said before, Sony pretty much sprung this on everyone, so I'm not surprised the controls aren't up to quality. Hopefully Metal Gear Solid 4 will deliver the goods and incorporate some great SIXAXIS controls.

And why not try to find a new way to add rumble back into the controller? None of this "it'll disrupt the tilt" crap. The Wiimote does it just fine, so why not the SIXAXIS?

Oh, and fix this problem with the batteries so that I don't have to go buy a new SIXAXIS when the battery dies. Thanks.

Agree? Disagree? Think I'm nuts? Let me know!

Waka waka waka...

Today was a pretty slow day, with little to catch my eye until I hit up good ol' Destructoid. There, on the front page was an interesting music video from British group The Go! Team for their song "Junior Kickstart". The video itself features the Pac-Ghosts in pursuit of Ms. Pac-Man across Manhattan, and both the video and song rock hardcore.

However, after watching the video on Destructoid, I began to remember all the other cool Pac-Man videos I'd seen.

So, because there hasn't been much to talk about today besides Manhunt 2 coming to the Wii and I don't feel like talking about that just yet... here's some cool Pac-Man related videos. Enjoy. happy

Pac-Man In Class - Filmed at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, we get to see people dressed in Pac-Man costumes disrupt a lecture on what appears to be something related to science. Needless to say, I'm inspired to do on my own campus.

Then they did it again. But a bit different.

Here's a similar one done in one of the libraries at the University of Michigan.

Pac-Man On Family Guy - Kind of cute, but like a lot of what Family Guy has become, it's worth nothing more than a chuckle. Oh, and it also gave us that cool Pac-Man smoking logo. On the other hand...

Pac-Man On Futurama - Much better than what Family Guy did. Of course, this came from "Anthology of Interest II", where Fry wondered what it would be like if life were more like a video game. A classic. happy

Pac-Man: The Movie - Production values aren't great for this video, but you've got to give the guys who put it together credit for making it fun to watch. Check it out.

PacManhattan - The one that started the whole craze of people running around like Pac-Man. With a map, some costumes, cell phones, and the island of Manhattan as their playing field, a group of grad students from NYU devised this simple, yet fun game. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Live Action Pac-Man In Japan - A fun little clip from the 1980s Japanese comedy show Oretachi Hyokin-Zoku. Japanese humor isn't always universal, but in this case, it's funny to watch no matter what language you speak.

By the way, the second Pac-Man in the skit? That's legendary Japanese TV personality Kitano "Beat" Takeshi. You might know him better for his impossible-to-beat Famicom game; Takeshi's Castle, which came over to the U.S. as MXC; and his roles in Battle Royale and the 2003 remake of Zatoichi. The first Pac-Man is also a famous Japanese TV personality, Sanma Akashiya.

Still seems Pac-Man Fever is raging all over.
