What is photoSIG?

photoSIG is a community of photography enthusiasts ranging from snapshooters to amateur photographers to working professionals.

photoSIG members may enter critiques of photos submitted by others and may also submit their own photos for review. The critique system totals the ratings for individual photos as well as for each photographer.

photoSIG also features discussion forums covering most photographic topics.

What Can I Do Here?

If you're just starting out, you might start by looking at the Tutorial, then proceed on to the Photos page, where you'll find the 30 most recently submitted photos. If you see a photo that you like, you can enter a critique of the photo.

Once you've seen the latest photos, you can check out the Highest Rated photos, or maybe the Most Controversial photos. You can also browse photos by category.

You can also submit your own photos so that they can be critiqued by others. You can keep track of your photos and critiques on the My photoSIG pages.

If you'd rather read than look at pictures, you will find hundreds of messages in the forums. If you have a question about photography, you can post it in the Photo Answer Man forum.

News

June 13, 2002
The system was down for about three hours due to the failure of the Apache web server, apparently related to PHP Accelerator. This happened once before. We've removed PHP Accelerator for the time being. Sorry for the inconvenience.

May 18, 2002
We're now running on our new server. Two new servers in fact, each with two 1GHz Pentium IIIs. One is a dedicated database server while the other runs PHP. We've also set up PHP Accelerator. You should notice far fewer performance problems.

Version 1.15 is complete. The What's New page will tell you what is new in this version. Many people will be happy to have the sortable My Photos page. This version also includes a number of restrictions on unregistered users in an effort to minimize the costs spent supporting them.

May 11, 2002
Version 1.14 is now online. Have a look at the What's New page to see what's changed, then visit your My photoSIG page and upload your photo!

Introducing the photoSIG Semi-Useful Store! Here you can buy all sorts of stuff that you never knew you needed, each with a bona-fide photoSIG logo on it! You'll be impressed not only by the quality of the products but also how expensive they all are. But that's how it is for one-off custom-printed merchandise. And anyway, isn't a pair of boxer shorts with a photoSIG logo cheap at any price?

Last Chance Critic membership drive
The last couple of weeks have seen an incredible increase in the amount of traffic to this site, but the number of Last Chance Critics has not changed much, causing the current group of LCCs to be under an increasing load. If you'd like to "give back" to photoSIG, please consider becoming a Last Chance Critic. You'll get more points for your critiques and will help photoSIG remain the best photo critique site on the Internet!

April 8, 2002
Version 1.13 of photoSIG is now online. Unfortunately this version does not include the ability to reply to critiques, but it includes many other user-requested features including automatic sign-in, and it is much faster due to extensive use of database result caching. Please help us work out the kinks by reporting bugs if you find them.

April 4, 2002
photoSIG has been selected as the Web Site of the Week by Amateur Photographer magazine for the week of April 6, 2002. We like this magazine a lot, so we're thrilled about the mention. Thanks to Chris Jarvis for the plug!

March 17, 2002
If you have time, please take a moment to rate photoSIG for the British Journal of Photography's Top Sites page. Please keep in mind that 10 is the highest score even thought it's listed at the bottom!

March 14, 2002
We've put a couple of surveys online. It would really help us make the site better and also sell good advertising if we knew more about you and what you thought of the site. Please visit the Surveys page and have a look.

March 10, 2002
Version 1.12 is now online. This version includes the production version of the Articles section as well as some paid advertising (egads!) on the Forums page, among other places. There's a better pager on the Photos page too.
